J.P. HARRIS Mrs. Herd E. (nee Mitchell) Harris was born June 17, 1869; was married to Joseph Pierce Harris January 24, 1889, and died March 19, 1900. She joined the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, in 1880 and at the time of her death her membership was at Radney's Chapel, on the Roanoke circuit. Her character was remarkable for its simplicity, the entire absence of affectation, and the remarkable readiness with which she adapted herself to the varied and responsible duties of her station. She was a tender, devoted and indulgent mother, a true wife, relying implicitly on her husband, a good neighbor "given to hospitality", and loved to administer to the wants and necessities of all with whom she came in contact. So frank, so candid, so generous, to know her was to love her and those who knew her best loved her more and appreciated her true worth. To the writer she said just six days before she died, then apparently in good health, with her sweet babe in her arms, two months or six weeks old, "Father, if I could only raise Joe and the baby to be true, genuine christians I would be satisfied." This was her wish often expressed and deep down in her heart there ever breathed a prayer that her husband, her two children, other loved ones and herself might one day meet the two infant children that god had taken to himself. Farewell, wife, mother, daughter, friend, but not forever. " A few more struggles here, A few more partings o'er, A few more toils, a few more tears, And we shall part no more." Written by J.H.
