Patterson is very low with consumption at her home in Rock Mills. __ The friends in this place of J.I. Albright will regret to learn of his death which occurred three weeks ago, of consumption. __ Mr. J.A. Hardy who is in feeble health, started to Tate Springs last Thursday but turned back at Atlanta being too sick to continue his journey. __ Our dashing young friend, Hamp Mitchell, son of W.D. Mitchell of Goldburg, surprised us by skipping off with a winsome bride a few days ago. The young lady's name is Miss Nelia Wilder. __ Over near State Line Saturday night, a negro row occurred during which Tom Cofield and Will Shepard were shot and killed, the former by Charlie Watkins. No arrests made yet as we have learned. __ Mr. Emil Zobel, the senior member of the firm of Zobel Bros., has been employed to superintend the building of the cotton factory. He is thoroughly competent for the task. __ Mr. J.A. Davidson and family and Mr. Jno. G. Taylor, all of Coosa county, visited the family of their kinsmen, W.H. Welch, the latter part of the week. __ A SAD DEMISE The town of Roanoke was shocked beyond expression at the sudden death of Mr. Paul P. Fleeth at 11 o'clock last night. He had apparently been in his usual good health and spirits throughout the day, and his untimely end is one of the saddest events this writer has ever been called upon to chronicle. He was as good a neighbor and as true a freind as we ever knew, and he was a most loving and devoted husband and father. With that charity which our divine master taught us we may hide his human frailties behind his many and more conspicuous virtues. The deceased leaves a loving wife and two bright little children. The funeral occurred today a the Mooty family burying ground in Georgia. __ NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, August 8, 1900 LOCAL News Mrs. T.E. Calhoun rturned yesterday to her home at Sewell, after a ten days visit to her parents, Mr. and Mrs. R.B. Hester in this city. __ S.J. Gladney and family went over to Bowdon, Georgia yesterday where they will remain for some time. Mr. Gladney has the contract for making the brick for the new college at that place. __ Mrs. J.R. Newman, while visiting her father H.T. Matthews near Roanoke, had the misfortune to lose her infant child which died Sunday night. The remains were taken to Rock Springs in Chambers county on Monday for interment. __ Mrs. Jeffers went down to Columbus on Saturday to meet her cousin Miss Fannie Graham of Harrison, Georgia who will visit her for some time. __ Mrs. A.J. Stewart went over to Camp Hill on Sunday to spend some time with her sister, Mrs. W.C. Wright. __ Mrs. Croley, nee Miss Maggie Swindall, now of Roswell, Ga., visited the family of B.C. Jones last week. __ Mrs. Kyle returned from South Carolina accompanied by her sister Miss Annie Ryan. __ TRUETT News Mr. and Mrs. E.W. Stanfield are on a visit to Griffin, Georgia. __ Mr. J.M. Hall and family are visiting relatives in Tallassee this week. __ Mrs. Ogman has been very sick with fever for several weeks. Hope to be able soon to note her recovery. __ NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, August 15, 1900 HAPPY LAND News Mrs. Young Dunn is slowly recovering from an attack of fever. __ Gus Richardson has the fever. His condition is critical. __ Emma Taylor has been under the doctor's care for week with the fever. __ H.T. Brown and sons are running a planing mill near this place. __ Last Tuesday, Mr. W.J. Slay and Miss Sallie Hodges were united in marriage. __ WEHADKEE News Mr. J.M. Fincher is confined to his room with fever. __ A gloom was cast over this community last Thursday by the unexpected death of Mr. Ezra Stitt. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. A.M. Yoe on Friday, after which his body was laid to rest in the cemetery at Paran. He was one of the best young men in the county and was much loved by those who knew him. Mr. Guinn is helping to build the factory. __ Mr. Asbury Turner, an aged citizen living halfway between Roanoke and Rock Mills, died last Wednesday. __ Misses Clyde and Mabel Ponder of Opelika are expected to arrive in Roanoke Thursday evening to spend some time with their uncle, A.J. Brummit. __ Miss Leila Hearn of LaGrange was the guest of Miss Earlie Orr last Thursday and Friday. She accompanied her cousin Mr. C.N. Pike who came over to bid on the new Baptist church building. __ The Leader chronicles with regret the death of Fletcher Meacham the 15 year old son of W.B. Meacham, which occurred yesterday afternoon after a long illness of typhoid fever. The funeral will occur at Bacon Level this afternoon at 3 o'clock. __ Deputy Sheriff C.L. Parker left for Tuscaloosa Saturday with Mr. Wm. Henderson, who will be under treatment at the Asylum. __ Mr. Tol Thornton, wife and child are visiting the family of B.F. Thornton. __ NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, August 22, 1900 HAPPY LAND News Billy Brown and Miss Minnie Cummings were married last week. The bride is thought to be one of the youngest voyagers on the matrimonial sea, being but little over thirteen years of age. They have our best wishes. __ T.L. Dunn saw a wild cat a few days ago. Tom is unable to give the exact size of the animal as he and the cat were both in too big a hurry to stop long enough for accurate measurements. __ Mrs. J.H. Dunn has a lingering case of lagrippe. __ Mrs. N.S. Woodyard and little daughter of Chilton county are spending a few days with the former's sister, Mrs. H.W. Edge. __ James Fuller has almost recovered from an attack of the fever. __ A crazy negro came to J.F. Beaird's not long since. Mr. Beaird was absent and Mrs. Beaird became frightened and left home. The negro entered the house and after rummaging the building for something to eat he went away. He was arrested and carried to LaFayette but was declared irresponsible and released. Such persons should not be permitted to run at large. __ LOCAL News Jule Langley is quite sick. __ Rogers Blake is visiting relatives here. __ Miss Mattie Moulder is the guest of her cousin Miss Nora Wright. __ Miss Gussie Spikes is visiting Mrs. A.G. Randle. She will go to LaGrange to visit a sister. __ Mr. Jim Stewart has come to Roanoke to study dentistry under Dr. W.S. Trent. He is a brother of W.J. Stewart. __ Miss Beulah Gay is spending some time at her father's home in the country where Mr. Will Carden and family are now visiting. __ Mr. Geo. L. Campbell with his two little sons of Columbia, Ala., visited his brother W.W. Campbell the latter part of the week. __ Mr. A.L. Long of Columbus has arrived in Roanoke for the purpose of opening a first class barber shop. __ Young Blake brings in from Broaden Ridge some of the largest snake tales of the season. They are rattlers. __ Draper Dobbins, his mother and his sister Mrs. Russell of Anniston are visiting Mrs. Major Schuessler. __ Several deaths among the negroes include Fannie Garrett and Manse Callaway. __ We regret to report the serious illness of Thos. J. Belcher who has typhoid fever. __ Mrs. G.W. Hill was taken very ill Monday night but is some better now. __ Mrs. Sallie Lumpkin of Georgia is visiting Mrs. Emma Stewart. __ Mrs. M.M. Patterson died at Rock Mills last Sunday. __ Mrs. Isaac Miles died near Louina on Sunday. __ Tom Foster and his mother-in-law are both on the sick list. __ Mitchell Handley is home from Birmingham on a rest for several weeks. __ The little child of Jesse Brewer died Sunday in the White's Chapel neighborhood. __ Miss Annie Parker Maxwell of Montezuma, Ga., is visiting her aunt, Mrs. J.F. Barron. __ Mrs. G.W. Harrison with her little daughter is visiting her brother Conductor Kyle. __ Malcolm Purcell arrived from Greensboro on Friday to visit his father's family. __ A.P. Finley was accompanied on his visit to this section by his accomplished wife whom he married in Kentucky some months ago. __ C.A. Zobel is the preacher at Standing Rock. __ HELD FOR COUNTERFEITING An interesting trial was held this morning before U.S. Commissioner J.O. Thomspon. Mr. John Turner, a well known citizen of Goldburg, in the western part of this county, was arrested Monday by Secret Service Officer E.P. McAdams and Deputy Marshall H. Gibson, after some creditable detective work, on the charge of making counterfeit money, also making an selling molds for counterfeiting. The evidence was very strong against the prisoner. Judge Thompson placed him under $500. bond to await the U.S. Grand Jury. The bond has not been made yet. Mr. Turner, who is an Irishman and 70 years of age, is well liked by his neighbors. __ Col. Hiram Gibson has been transferred to this county to take the place of Byron Trammell who resigned from the Revenue Service. __ NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, August 29, 1900 WEHADKEE News (by S.D. Lewis, correspondent) We are sad to note that our little daughter Esther is very with with pneumonia. __ O.D., the little son of L.N. Mulloy is dangerously sick at this writing. __ Col. James Aiken of Gadsden is visiting the family of Mrs. W.W. Stitt near this place. __ The Mormons or Latter Day Saints are running a camp meeting at Potash this week. We learn that large crowds are attending. __ LEVEL ROAD News Miss Alma Kent of Langdale has been visiting here for some time. __ Mr. Emmet Williams has been ill with fever for the past few weeks but improving. __ "Uncle" Marion George is quite ill with fever. __ HAPPY LANDS Gus Richardson has relapsed, and quite ill. __ J.W. Slay has started his syrup mill. Few men in this community have more experience in this business than he. __ Prof. Beaird's wife is suffering from an attack of fever. __ E.C. Kitchens of Lanett is visiting relatives and friends hereabouts. __ Rev. J.D. Elder is in failing health. __ Policemans John Carroll and Peter Miller made a raid through Guy Handley's pasture and surprised a half a dozen negro gamblers and swept the stakes Sunday night. Jim Williams, John Culberson, Mat Morris and Mose Cochran throught too much of the officers to leave them but Joe Chewning and Warren Boyd suddenly remembered their supreme loyalty to their families at home. Boyd succeeded in tearing his way through the barbed wire fence and has since been on the repair shelf. Chewning made a bluff at drawing his gun but two messengers from Officer Miller's ready gun hastened him homeward. The quartette was landed in the lock up and the two escapees called upon later to appear. The mayor assessed the fines of $10. and costs or 30 days for each. ___ LOCAL News Mrs. Goldman is ill. __ Mr. French and family left Monday for Richland, Georgia. __ Mrs. W.G. Davis and daughter is visting her brother B.O. Driver. __ J.W. Stallings and daughter Miss Pearl are visiting the family of J.W. Young. __ Bob Bonner is very ill with typhoid fever at the home of his brother Dr. Bonner at Rock Mills. __ Mrs. Pattie Liles left Sunday on a visit to her brother and other relatives in Texas. She will be accompanied from Birmingham by her sister Mrs. Reid. Mrs. Hamiter will be in charge of Mrs. Liles' boarding house during her absence. __ Last Sunday, Mr. J.V. Trammell was married to Miss Ira Mooty at Five Points where both are prominent in social and church circles. Mr. Trammell is a brother of Byron Trammell of this place. __ R.J. Guinn and family and his sister Mrs. Shad Birdsong arrived in Roanoke yesterday, returning to Georgia from a visit to relatives in Wedowee. __ About the same date last week, Bill and Sam Hornsby, father and son, welcomed the advent of a son at each of their homes. __ Mrs. Mollie Weathers is convalescing after a serious illness. __ Mr. John Turner, the old man held for counterfeiting last week under bail of $500. succeeded in making bond. __ The Leader learns with sincere regret that the little daughter of Mr. S.D. Lewis, whose illness was mentioned in the Wehadkee communication, died yesterday morning. __ Ed Burns was in town yesterday with his cousin Joe Latimer who was returning to Guntersville. __ T.L.
