Cunningham, correspondent) "Uncle" Tommie Clack of Columbus came up on the train last week. His widowed daughter, Mrs. Ida Coggins, with her six little children, accompanied him from Opelika. For several years her home was in Chilton County but the death of her husband almost compelled her to return where she can obtain assistance from her relatives and friends. Her condition makes a strong appeal to those prepared to render aid. She is without a home and her oldest child, a girl, is not yet twelve years of age. ___ GRAHAM News Three prominent citizens of this place, Dr. Duke, our postmaster Mr. Joe Johnson and Mr. Willis Sewell, started the first of last week on an extended visit in the west. Dr. Duke stops in Arkansas; Messrs. Johnson and Sewell go on to Texas, where both have relatives and Mr. Johnson has a son engaged in business there. __ Mr. Lee Nesbitt and wife moved to Atlanta, the home of the wife's parents, last week. __ LOCAL News R.H. Harris returned Saturday from a trip to Texas and Oklahoma. __ On next Saturday, Rev. and Mrs. W.J.D. Upshaw will celebrate their silver wedding anniversary, their twenty-fifth, in this city. Over one hundred invitations have been issued to the occasion. __ Miss D. Hood has been spending a week with her sister, Mrs. Jule Langley. __ An infant of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Lane died last Thursday at their home two miles below town. __ W.L. Hill and family moved to Dadeville where Mr. Hill engaged in the mercantile business with Graves R. Shaffer. __ We learn that Mr. John Henry Bass, son of "Uncle" Hardy Bass, will be married this evening to Miss Dora Kitchens at the bride's home near Double Head. __ Last Wednesday night the gin and mill operated by Eph Pool and one or two of his relatives was totally destroyed by fire. There was no insurance. __ Mrs. J.H. Hines, an excellent christian lady, died at her home at Standing Rock at 8 o'clock this morning. We extend our sympathy. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, December 19, 1900 ROCK MILLS News B. Pitts and family living near this place, moved to Florida last week where they will reside in the future. __ Mr. J.K.P. Harmon, one of our oldest and cleverest citizens, moved to the southern part of the state last week. __ Mr. M. Duke continues very ill. __ Miss Addie Sharman and Mr. Fount Jones were married recently. __ The little son of Mr. Jas. Shepherd was bitten by a rabid dog a few days ago and was taken to Atlanta where he was treated by the Pasteur Institute. __ WEDOWEE News H.A. Napier who has been a citizen of this place for the past 14 years, will remove to Anniston this week. __ Lon Kent of Roanoke visited the family of his father Sheriff Kent yesterday. __ WEHADKEE News Mrs. R.H. Stitt, who was dangerously ill last week is improving slowly. __ "Uncle" Hiram Forbes and his wife, two of our oldest citizens, moved last Thursday to LaGrange. __ On next Wednesday evening, Dr. E.P. Green of this place and Miss Guinn Allen of State Line, Georgia will be happily married at the bride's home. The following day they will repair to the home of the groom's father at Crowder, Ga., where they will be given a grand reception. The doctor is a first class gentleman and Miss Allen is one of Heard county's most accomplished young ladies. __ CENTER News Mr. Florence Ragsdale sold his household and kitchen furniture at public outcry last Monday. Mr. M.C. Camp also sold out the same day. Mr. Thomas Anderson will have a sale the 14th. He is going to make the Lone Star State his future home. __ Mr. Dock McBurnett of Texas is visiting his brother, Mr. Milford of this community. __ Mr. Larkin Dewbery and family are visiting his mother up in Cleburne. __ APPLICATION BY ADMINISTRATOR TO SELL LAND State of Alabama, Randolph County Probate Court December 4, 1900 Estate of Robert Benefield, deceased This day came A.J. Kent, administrator of the estate of said decedent, and filed his application in due form and under oath praying for an order of sale of certain lands described therein, and belonging to said estate, for the purpose of division, on the ground that said land cannot be equitably divided among the heirs and distributees of said estate. It is ordered that the 14th day of January 1901 be and the same is hereby appointed a day for hearing said application. The following are non-resident heirs and distributees of said estate: J.M. Benefield of Pittsburg, Texas S.T. Gore of Heard County, Georgia Henry Shellnut of Heard County, Georgia Three sons of R.P. Benefield, deceased, names unknown, of the state of Texas Ella Henson of Bell County, Texas Three children of L.M. Beck, deceased, whose names are unknown, who reside in Bell County, Texas And all other persons interested in said estate; take notice of said application and the day set for the hearing of same, when they can appear at my office and contest the same if they think proper to do so. Stell Blake, Judge of Probate _______ LOCAL News Born to Mr. and Mrs. John Will Collier on the 17th, a son. __ John Sledge has bought and moved to his farm near Happy Land. __ W.H. McMurray and family are recovering from an attack of scarlet fever. His wife and child are also convalescent. __ Last Sunday an old negress died in Roanoke named Mit Strong. From the best information we can get she was over 100 years old and some estimate her age at 115. She was the mother-in-law of the famous "Plet" and was part Indian. ___ Last Sunday Mr. Henry T. Mathews was married to Miss Mollie Cumbee, daughter of the late Rev. John Cumbee. __ Lucius Baker has again been respited for 30 days. __ Miss Dale Stewart was called to her distant home in Maryland last Friday by the serious illness of her grandmother. __ Yesterday morning while climbing a fence Eugene Jeffers was accidentally shot in the right ankle by a small 33 calibre rifle. The wound is not considered serious. __ At 12 o'clock Sunday night the little son of Rev. and Mrs. H.C. Risner, about three years of age, died of scarlet fever. At the same time another child of the afflicted parents, a daughter, next older, was dangerously ill of the same disease but now appears to be convalescing. Monday afternoon the funeral services wre conducted by Rev. Jenkins who concluded the brief services at the grave in the city cemetery. The sympathy of all of our people goes out to the sorely bereaved parents in this hour of their darkest sorrow. __ A pleasing event was the marriage at the home of the bride in Wedowee, at 10 o'clock this morning, of Mr. Watson T. Brewer of Charlotte, N.C. to Miss Lena Smith, who was until recently, connected with the post office in Roanoke. It was while in this position that the acquaintance was formed which culminated in the happy union of today. Mr. Brewer, who is a mail clerk between Charlotte and Savannah, was at the time placed on a special run to Roanoke. The Leader is among the well wishers of this happy pair. ___ Mrs. J.T. Talley has gone to Heard County to attend the marriage of her sister and Dr. E.P. Green. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, December 26, 1900 LOCAL News Mrs. Pulliam of Houston, Georgia has come to make her home with the family of B.C. Jones. __ At 5 o'clock Christmas evening at the home of Mr. R.B. Jordan near Welsh, his daughter Miss Anna was married to Mr. Lon Truett, with Rev. A.S. Brannon officiating. We extend best wishes. __ Mr. W.C. Whitlock of Pickton, Texas is out on a visit to friends and relatives here. __ Mr. H.H. Huckeba, an old and honored citizen of this county, died at his home two miles south of Wedowee on Saturday. The news of his death will carry sadness to many friends. __ The Leader is able to chronicle the death of Frank Seymour, colored, which occurred Wednesday night about 9 o'clock. He was found by some negroes lying dead on the sidewalk just east of the oil mill. Physicians were summoned but they could find no marks of violence on his person. They will continue the examination today. Seymour was one of the best colored men in the community and enjoyed the confidence of both races. He supported his family and his aged mother.
