Huckeba, an old and much respected citizen of our community, which sad even occurred at his residence about three miles south of town, on last Saturday morning. His death was very sudden and was caused by paralysis or apoplexy. He was the father of our townsmen Messrs. J.J. and L.C. Huckeba. His remains are being held for the arrival of some of his children from Texas, before interment. __ Col. John W. Overton has purchased a handsome buggy and is now prepared to entertain his best girl in proper style. __ WEHADKEE News J.M. Gay made a business trip to Carrollton, Ga., a few days ago __ C. E. Seegar has moved to Springfield. We regret losing such a valuable citizen. __ LOCAL News Mrs. Jake Barnhill and son of Lineville returned yesterday from a visit to the former's daughter, Mrs. Frank Thornton in this place. __ Zobel Brothers have purchased the old Vernon lot out on Wedowee street and an acre adjoining from S.S. Waller's and will son begin to erect a residence thereon. __ Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Stewart have gone to Atlanta where Mr. Stewart has bought an interest in a wholesale furniture business. He is a good businessman and a clever gentleman and we regret to lose him from our town. __ James Barrett, father of Mrs. Allen Carlisle, returned to Texas yesterday. __ Mr. Newton of Hogansville is visiting his daughter Mrs. W.S. Kirk. __ Notwithstanding last Sunday was a rainy, dreary day, it brought sunshine and happiness into two young hearts, which now beat as one. Mr. Will Causey and Miss Meta Manley hied away to Texas, Georgia in the morning hours and were united in marriage by Esquire Beard. They were accompanied by Lon Pool and Miss Myrt Manley, Luther Stewart and Ed Causey. Returning in the evening to the home of the groom's parents, Mr. and Mrs. N.C. Causey, the bridal party were entertained at a sumptuous supper. The bride is the oldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H.C. Manley and is a winsome little woman. The groom is an employee of B.O. Driver's drug concern. Mr. and Mrs. Causey are staying at the home of the groom's parents. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, January 9, 1901 WEDOWEE News Col. J.W. Oliver is suffering with rheumatism and is barely able to get about. __ HAPPY LAND News Yesterday morning Mr. Robt. Ester and Mrs. Ella Richardson were joined in wedlock. __ Since our last report Mr. Ira Clack and Miss Lydia Burditt embarked on the matrimonial sea. __ W.W. Elder is slowly recovering from an attack of sickness. __ A few days since while out hunting, J. Tom Pearson received a stray shot between the eyes. Dr. Hudson attended him and he is doing well. __ Prof. Beaird's wife is no better and her friends fear the worst is not far distant. __ John Will Pearson received a dangerous kick from a mule about a week ago. For a time it was thought that the injury would prove fatal but he is now recovering at this writing. __ ROCK MILLS News Mr. M. Duke, we regret to note, is still very ill at his home. __ Truitt, the young son of Mr. and Mrs. William Allison, has been very ill with pneumonia but appears to be improving. __ Mr. Lum Whitlock of Texas, will return to his home in a few days. Some of our young men will accompany him to engage in farming. __ Mr. Manley Duke and family of near Loachapoka were here a few days ago, the guests of relatives. __ PARAN Community News Mr. Ben Turner of Rock Mills and his brother f rom Texas were visitors in our ville last week. __ Mr. Will Hendon informs us that he's going west soon. We learn that others will follow. __ We are sorry to learn that Rev. J.T. Layton is very sick with typhoid fever. __ LOCAL News Mrs. Fleeth is quite ill. __ Next Tuesday, Mr. W.N. Spinks and Miss Jennie Amos will be married at the latter's home near Wedowee. __ J.W. Trent has left his express run on an indefinite leave of absence on account of impaired health. He is at the home of his father. __ Mrs. M.A. Dudley and several of her children arrived Monday from Barbour county and will make Roanoke their home again. They will occupy a small house out on the road to Graves Creek. __ Messrs. Andy and Bud Arnett of Texas are visiting their father Mr. R.A. Arnett near town. The former had not been here in 26 years. The latter has been in Texas 21 years but has made one previous visit back home. __ Charlie Cardwell left for Texas yesterday. __ Mr. Martin Duke died at Rock Mills yesterday. __ Thomas Adcock, a citizen north of town, was stricken with paralysis a few days ago. __ Mrs. John C. Wright died near Louina last night. She was the mother-in-law of Sheriff Kent. __ NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, January 16, 1901 WEHADKEE News Mr. Willis Mayfield of Taylor County, Texas is visiting relatives hereabouts. __ Robt. Harlan has a mill located on his place and is sawing a large bill of lumber. __ John Shepard, a negro, died near this place a few days ago with pneumonia. __ Mr. Bob Robertson of Rogers, Texas has been visiting relatives in this community. __ STROUD News Rev. Jesse Holiday was called near Wedowee a few days ago to attend the funeral of a lady that died up there by the name of Wright. __ Mr. N.S. Shelnut has moved to Welsh community. _ Mr. Henry Prince and family from Crowder, Ga., have moved to Stroud. We welcome them among us. __ LOCAL News The condition of Mrs. Lucy White is such as to cause her family much concern, we regret to note. __ Tomorrrow a party of citizens will leave Roanoke for Oklahoma Territory headed by ex-sheriff R.H. Harris who has just returned from a prospecting tour through that country. Mr. Harris will take his family. The other members of the party are Jesse Hancock, Marvin Stewart and Tuck Pittman. We understand that the tide is pretty swift out there but we trust these brave spirits will be able to stem it and reach the haven of success. __ Reed Seymour's mother died last Thursday. She was about 90 years of age. She was an old time darky who came from Virginia in slave time and enjoyed the respect of both white and colored people. Such characters are now becoming rare and their passing away is worthy of note. __ Mrs. J.T. Nelson and little child arrived Monday from West Point and will make this their future home. __ Z.P. Gunn has taken the contract for building the new church at Lane's Chapel. It will be located about 150 yards north of the present site. __ John T. Kitchens died January 3rd near Tyler, Texas. He was a noted character in this county years ago. He dropped dead of heart failure. __ At the home of the bride's uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. McBurnett near Wedowee, Mr. Walter N. Spinks was married yesterday at 2 o'clock to Miss Jennie Amos. Mr. Spinks is a mail clerk on the east Alabama Railway and his bride is an excellent young woman. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, January 23, 1901 CENTER News Mr. Dan McCane and MIss Roxie McManus were happily married Thursday night, January 3rd. __ Mr. Dock McBurnett who has been visiting relatives in this community and trading on horse stock, has returned to his home in Texas. __ LOCAL News Mrs. E.R. Finney has been quite sick. __ Walter Harmon, an ex-sheriff of Chambers county, froze to death the latter part of last week. We are informed that he lay out in the weather, Thursday, Friday and Saturday and was dead when found. __ We are in receipt of an invitation to the marriage of Dr. Sam Lane to Miss Annie Farguson at the home of the bride's mother on Tuesday evening January 20th. Dr. Lane is a worthy son of Randolph county who is now winning success in his chosen profession in his adopted home of Opelika. __ Last Friday, Lucius Baker was to have been hung, but Governor Samford respited him for sixty days so that he might look into the matter fully. __ Chas. R. Ruggles of Rome, Ga., accompanied by his two children, is visting his brother H.G. Ruggles, being called here by the very feeble health of his mother. __ Thos. G. Adcock, a good citizen who lived several miles north of town, died last Wednesday of paralysis. __ Mrs. Mat Turner died in Bacon Level beat Monday night. __ Jim Green and Oscar Waller Jr. are recovering from an illness of typhoid fever. __ Myrtie Lou Duke who lives with Mrs. Grice near Double Head, fell in the fire Sunday and one of her arms was badly burned. __ A son of Jasper Bailey died rather suddenly a few days ago at his home near town. He was nineteen years of age. __ Luther Stitt of Wehadkee and Miss Myrtis Jones, daughter of J.B. Jones near Paran, were married last Sunday. They went to Georgia. __ Bonnie Awbrey, accompanied by Miss Zoe Davis, went to West Point today to attend the marriage of his cousin Miss Annie Bass to Mr. B.H. Hill which occurs at 6 o'clock this evening. __ GRAHAM News Chas. Arrington from near Omaha is boarding with relatives and attending school at this place. __ NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, January 30, 1901 WEHADKEE News A.J. Hester and wife are visiting relatives at Rockalo, Georgia. __ Rufus Whatley left several days ago for Murkel, Texas where he will seek his fortune. __ Miss Lucy Pearce of Red Oak, Georgia is visiting relatives in this community. __ LOCAL News Mr. and Mrs. H.L. Watson and their daughter Mrs. Cameron and her children have moved to Roanoke from LaGrange, Troup County, and are occupying one of the new houses erected by B.C. Jones on Louina street. __ Dr. J.C. Swann went to Atlanta Sunday with his brother-in-law, Joe A. Dobson, to have the latter's eyes operated on. __ E.W. Hill and Henry Duke left yesterday for St. Louis and will return in a few days with a car of fine mules. __ Mrs. Mary Lane is suffering from a fall she received Sunday night. __ Mrs. M.W.J. Young left Saturday returning to her home in Tennessee. __ ROBERT S. HEFLIN DEAD At about dawn of day last Thursday the light of life went out with Mr. Robt. S. Heflin, one of the most promiment citizens of Randolph County. The event occurred at his home at Cambridge, north Randolph; the interment was in the cemetery at Wedowee Friday. If Mr. Heflin had lived three months longer he would have been 86 years of age. Soon after the war he represented his district in congress. At one time the House adjourned to hear him sing in his inimitable style, one of the old time melodies. All in all, his career was a remarkable one. His passing away leaves but one member living of the old Heflin family, Dr. W.L. Heflin of this city, who was with his brother in the last days. ___ LEGAL NOTICE State of Alabama, Randolph County Probate Court, Jan'y 12, 1901 Notice to: H.P. Peaden have filed their application in said court for a sale of the lands described therein, belonging to said joint owners, for the purpose of partition and division and the 11th day of Feb'y, 1901 has been appointed for the hearing of said application.
