Wood arrived yesterday from Georgia and is visiting her son Wyatt Wood. __ Misses Lena and Emma Hardy spent Sunday and Monday in Roanoke being called here by the death of their little nephew. __ Mr. and Mrs. Richmond Perry returned home from Texas after a visit to their four sons there. __ The Leader regrets to note the death of G.V. Shamblee, one of the best citizens of this county. His death occurred at his home at Wildwood January 27th. he was the postmaster at Wildwood and was engaged in farming. He was in the prime of life and his untimely death will prove a great loss to his family and to his country. __ J.P. Crowder, a prominent citizen of Stroud, was married Thursday night to Miss Mollie White at Langdale. __ The venerable wife of "Uncle " Fonza Pittman was paralyzed on one side of her body last Sunday. Her condition is very serious. __ Mrs. Charles Cardwell will leave for Texas this afternoon to join her husband who has located out there. __ Mrs. Mollie Rutlage has returned to Phenix City after a visit to her mother Mrs. Moon. __ Mrs. Amos Liles, a venerable lady, died last Wednesday, several miles west of Roanoke. __ Rev. Jas. T. Lane was married in Birmingham on Jan. 29th to Miss Bessie Hood. __ MRS. A.C. HIGGINS DEAD At twenty minutes past nine o'clock last night the gentle spirit of Mrs. Adaline Clark Higgins took its peaceful flight. The demise occurred after an illness of ten days at the home of her devoted son, Charles E. Higgins, in this city. Asked for a few facts about the deceased, Mr. Higgins wrote down a few historical facts and concluded "She was one of the best mothers." No higher tribute could have been paid her than this loving compliment from "her boy." Mrs. Higgins was born in South Carolina Dec. 22, 1815. She had lived in Alabama since 1842. She had been a member of the Baptist church for many years. Her labors well done, she has entered into rest. The funeral will be at Bethel at one o'clock this afternoon. We sympathize with the bereaved in their greatest loss, the death of a mother. ___ NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, February 13, 1901 HAPPY LAND News (by E.C. Cunningham, correspondent) Since our last report, Jeff Weldon and Nannie French were made husband and wife. __ Last Sunday norning, James Liles and Mittie Osborn were united in marriage. __ Log rollings and quiltings are becoming fashionable in these parts. __ WEHADKEE News (by S.D. Lewis, correspondent) Berry Whatley is the father of a ten pound boy. __ Miss Jane Young, formerly of this place, died last week near Wedowee. __ LOCAL News Luther M. Stewart left Monday for Texas on a prospecting tour of several weeks. __ Amos and Olin Mooty have gone over to Georgia to see their brother Frank who is very ill with pneumonia. __ R.C. Canady called on us Thursday and changed his paper to Langdale to which place he is moving. We trust he may strike it rich in his new location. __ Mr. P.O. Snuggs and Miss Mollie Stewart were married last week. The couple left for south Alabama on Thursday. __ Miss Sarah Mattox of Whitesville, Ga., is spending a few days with her sister Mrs. W.H. Brittain. __ Miss Clark returned to Opelika Saturday after an extended visit to her sister Mrs. E.R. Finney, who has been quite sick though now somewhat improved. __ W.R. Avery called at this office last Thursday and gave us the pleasure of an introduction to his brother J.T. Avery, who is out here on a visit from the Indian Territory. Mr. Avery formerly lived in this county and went west over 25 years ago and this is his first return. He could find but a few of the old landmarks of the town of Roanoke and recognized but few of its citizens. He talks very sensibly of the western country, he says that while it is a very fertile land and fine crops are made, he would not advise any man who has a home here to pull up and leave. Well enough is hard to beat. __ The writer has the special pleasure in conveying the news that at last one brave spirit inhabiting the realm known locally as "Bachelor's Hill" has succeeded in winning the hand and heart of one of Eve's fair daughters. Tomorrow at 2 o'clock Mr. Ernest F. Zobel will wed Miss Kate Wallace at her home in Five Points. They will return to Roanoke in the evening and be at home to their friends in the new and cozy cottage of Mr. Zobel's on Wedoswee street, out near Mr. Waller's. We most heartily congratulate our good neighbor on his success in "breaking the record" and above all, in winning such a worthy and amiable young lady as his bride. Mr. Zobel is one of the most capable and successful of Roanoke's young business men and enjoys the esteem of a large and growing circle of friends. ____ NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, February 20, 1901 ROCK MILLS News Mr. William Burk, an aged citizen of near Paran, has been ill for some time but we are glad to note that he is recovering. __ Miss Myrtie Pounds of Sanforville, Ga., is the guest of Mr. and Mrs. James Wilson. __ GRAHAM News Mr. Miner Smith returned home last Saturday from Tampa, Florida where he has been engaged in business for some time. He will be at home all the year. __ Mr. Bill McCarley's brother from Cherokee County is here on a visit. __ Mr. John T. Kaylor is expected home this week. He went to Atlanta nearly a fortnight ago for the sake of surgical treatment. He has been in a precarious condition since Christmas. We hope to see our esteemed friend much improved when he returns. __ LOCAL News Mr. John Aiken and Miss Lect Brown both living near Double Head, were married last Sunday. __ Charlie Dudley was hit on the head last week with a big rock and has been confined to his room ever since. __ Mr. Peter Green of Lamar died last Friday evening and was buried Sunday at 3 o'clock. He was a victim of consumption and had been sick since July, though only confined to his room the past month. __ W.N. Gladney is back from a visit of three or four days in Lanett. He reports that there are a number of cases of smallpox there and that one of the physicians who has been attending some of the smallpox cases has himself contracted the disease. __ Mr. B.A. Sharp of Carrollton, Ga is over at the bedside of his brother Mr. Jno. A. Sharp. The latter has been seriously sick but we are glad to learn is improving. __ The photographer Whit W. Whitman is located at the gallery in the Handley House where he is executing first class photography. __ Mrs. Staples of Roopville, Ga., visited her daughter Mrs. Akers last week. __ Mr. Jack Liles, an aged and well known citizen living in Chambers County near the Randolph line, died last Wednesday and was buried with Masonic honors Thursday at Milltown. __ A little four year old daughter of W.D. Mayo, living 4 miles southwest of town, died Tuesday morning. __ Handley, the son of Mr. G. Gay of Level Road shot himself in the leg recently. It is not thought that the wound is dangerous. __ Last Sunday evening at 7 o'clock, Dr. H.B. Disharoon and Miss Emma Mayfield were married, Rev. Geo. L. Jenkins officiating. Dr. Disharoon is a prominent physician of this place and his bride is the daughter of Mr. W.S. Mayfield. __ During the present month the following have been received into the Methodist Church: S.A. Walden, Mrs. Tina Walden, Urban Walden, S.C. Akers. Mrs. Ada E. Akers, R.L. Watson and Mrs. M.F. Watson. __ Mr. and Mrs. E. Zoble were called to Five Points Saturday afternoon by the illness of the latter's mother, Mrs. Wallace. The sickness resulted in Mrs. Wallace's death yesterday. She will be buried today. __ Mrs. J.T. Talley is another victim of lagrippe. __ Mr. Robin Liles living near Driver is reported to be very sick. __ The aged mother of our townsman W.H. Welch has been sick at the home of Troy Kitchens at Double Head. __ A Card I am now prepared to do piano tuning and repairing and fancy cane work. I am also agent for pianos and organs. L.N.
