Mayfield had a sawmill located on his place, sawing a contract of timber. __ Death has again visited our community and called Mrs. Mary Head to her eternal home. She was a christian lady and loved by all who knew her. We extend our sympathy to the bereaved ones. __ HAPPY LAND News Frazier Richardson has the fever. __ Bulah Watts of Columbus has been visiting relatives here. __ The widow of the late David Strickland died last night. __ Thurston and Bones Hill are visiting relatives over in Georgia. __ Uncle Joe Elder and wife of Dempsey, Clay County have been visiting relatives here. __ Melton Hubbard and Dick Norred and families have just returned from an extended visit in Harris County, Ga. __ LOCAL News Mrs. Matt Satterwhite is quite ill. __ Mrs. Spinks went to Wedowee Saturday to visit relatives accompanied by Miss Kittie Lee Amos. __ F.H. Hill, a good citizen living in the Union community, was called to Columbus Sunday to attend the funeral of his brother Andrew Hill who was killed by being run over by a train the day before. The deceased leaves a wife and several children. __ A son of Jim McCarter was accidentally shot in the thigh last Saturday by an old rifle and the wound is quite severe. It was a case of not knowing the gun was loaded. The accident occurred on Broughton Ridge. __ A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Parrish Thursday night, so the home of Dr. and Mrs. W.A. White is now blessed with four grandchildren. __ Henry Louis Zobel made another of his "smiling" trips to Wedowee on Sunday. __ Our clever telegraph operator H.H. Cauthen is the father of a son born on the 2nd inst. __ Last week the Leader printed invitations of the marriage of John B. McCosh to Miss Gertrude Carter at Owensbyville, Ga. The event occurs at 9 o'clock Monday morning, August 12th at the home of the bride's brother. __ The wife of Section Boss Glawson died at Stroud Saturday and was buried on Sunday. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, August 13, 1901 HAPPY LAND News Forney Wheeler is preparing to visit Texas. __ Lizzie Clark who has been an invalid for several years is slowly improving. __ Mrs. J.H. Dunn has symptoms of pneumonia. __ A few days since Jno. W. Pearson, before going to bathe, removed his false teeth and carefully placed them on a stump nearby, saying " I will not do as John Aikens did, go in swimming and lose them." But while he was in the water a dog seized his teeth and the stolen property has not yet been recovered. __ LOCAL News While returning from Texas last Thursday, Charlie Watts accidentally fell from the train and died the next day from injuries sustained. The body was brought on to Daviston for interment near where the deceased was reared. Mr. Watts was a nephew of W.H. Knight of the Bank of Roanoke. __ Messrs. Robert and James Askew, clever citizens of Newnan, were in town week the guests of Robert Brown. __ T.S. Foster left this morning to spend a week with relatives at his old home in Marengo County. __ Mrs. Martin of Perry, Ga., is visiting the family of her brother J.E. Mann. __ Robt. L. Bonner and Miss Lucile Vinson, well known young people of this city, drove over to Franklin, Georgia last Sunday and were quietly married. They were accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Belcher. They are at home to their friends at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. H.W. Vinson on Lebanon St. The Leader extends best wishes. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, August 31, 1901 BOYS IN GRAY; ORIGINAL ROLL OF A COMPANY FORMED IN 1861 Monday morning, Captain B.F. Weathers brought into our office a tattered piece of paper, a clipping from The Montgomery Advertiser of ancient date. There is a considerable interest attached to this article, and we shall reproduce it for the benefit and pleasure it may be to the descendants and relatives of the old soldiers and to the veterans yet living. This clipping was found in the Bible of the late Mrs. Lucy White shortly after her death in this city the first of June. On the roll appears the name of a son of Mrs. White, Henry C. White, who died from exposure during the war and for whom his mother deeply grieved for many years. This is the original muster roll of Company E, 17th Alabama Regiment, which was composed of volunteers from Roanoke and surrounding territory. It was organized Sept. 9, 1861 under the name of "The Dowdell Rangers" named in honor of the father of our Judge Dowdell, the former being the representative of this district in congress at that time. On the battlefield of Shiloh, in which this company bore a heroic part, Lieutenant B.F. Weathers was promoted to the rank of Captain. Lewis, correspondent) Walter Davis and his sister Miss Carrie of Frolona, Ga. visited relatives here Sunday. __ On last Monday night, Mr. Aaron Fincher and Mrs. Nan Skipper were united in marriage, the writer performing the ceremony. __ NORTH RANDOLPH News Ed McWhorter, who has been sick all summer is a little better. __ Mrs. J.F. McKinzie who has been confined to her bed for the past six months is slowly improving. __ The Pinetucky Gold Mines are working about twenty men now. __ LOCAL News O.R. Strickland went to Langdale to accept a position as a clerk in a store there. __ J.A. Davidson has been enjoying a visit from his mother Mrs. S.C. Allen and his half- brother O.C. Allen of Columbus. __ The announcement has been made of the marriage of Mr. Thomas Eugene Murphree of Troy and Miss Willie Callen Purcell of this city. The nuptials will be celebrated at the Methodist church of Roanoke at one o'clock Wednesday afternoon, August 28th. __ We understand that Mr.J.P.D. Murphy has resigned his position as postmaster here to take effect Sept 1st. The Wedowee News Journal __ Mrs. E.F. Wright of Texas is visiting her son Z.J. Wright. __ Miss Matilda Zobel went last week to make an extended visit to relatives in Illinois. __ On Monday, a few miles south of town, the wife of W.L. Ward, a brother of J.M. Ward of this city, died after an illness of some time. Besides her husband she leaves several children, the youngest being nearly grown. The funeral occurred yesterday at Mt. Zion. __ Over in Heard County, Ga., a little child of Mr. and Mrs. W.T. Lane died of scarlet fever, on Monday. It was eighteen months of age. The remains were brought to Lane's Chapel yesterday and interred. Rev. G.L.Jenkins conducted the services. __ NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, August 28, 1901 LOCAL News R.J. Higgins arrived from Florida to spend some time with his daughter Mrs. Wade Carlisle. __ J.R. Collins and family will leave Friday for Subuta, Mississippi where he will teach the coming year. __ Eugene R. Paschal died in Dadeville last week. He was formerly a depot agent at this place. __ Mrs. D. Yarbrough died Sunday night and was buried at Rock Mills on Monday. __ Mrs. W.N. Spinks visited her sister at Ward's Mill last week. __ Two cases of scarlet fever have occurred among the children of R.B. Jordan of Welsh, his two youngest children. __ PROFESSOR LEONIDAS JONES DEAD (Large sketch/drawing of him included) Just before 7 o'clock this morning, Prof. Leonidas Jones died at his residence in this city after a long illness of Bright's Disease. He was 65 years of age, yesterday being his birthday. He was one of the most prominent educators in all this section and his death will be widely mourned. The funeral will occur in Roanoke tomorrow morning, the hour not yet determined. We regret that we have not time at the hour of going to press for a more extended notice. Our sympathies are extended to those who mourn. __ At 1 o'clock this afternoon in the Methodist Church will occur the marriage of Mr. Thos. Eugene Murphree and Miss Willie C. Purcell. The ceremony will be performed by Rev. Geo. L. Jenkins. Mr. Joel Murphree Jr. will be the best man and MIss Florie Purcell the maid of honor. Messrs. Key Murphree, T.M. Purcell, J.D. Abernathy and J. Floyd Collins will act as ushers. Immediately after the ceremony the bridal party will leave for Troy, Alabama, the future home of Mr. and Mrs. Murphree.
