Our talented young preacher, Milligan Earnest officiated. __ Elder J.M. Joiner, in company with Bob Kirby, on their way to officiate in the marriage of Mr. Ira Adcock to Miss Lizzie Clark, were swept down by the raging waters of Wedowee Creek and barely escaped with their lives. The horse was saved but they lost their buggy. As they landed on the same side they started on, the probability is they failed to reach their appointment. __ Christmas passed off here satisfactorily as far as I have heard. Nat Shelnutt and I did manage to visit "Uncle Burrell" Nail, that blind oldest man and carry him some "Santa Claus." No one was prouder than that old man when he grasped the package of "goodies" handed him. Mr. Editor, if you will allow, I will say here is the oldest citizen in the county, perhaps in the state, dependent entirely on his widowed daughter who is also encumbered with an idiotic son over twenty one years of age and unable to labor. I so write, thinking maybe some philanthropist of means may see this and open his charitable heart in remembrance of this old blind pioneer. If he lives till the 6th day of September he will be one hundred years old. A royal dinner will be given him then. ___ Mr. Robt. Harris and Miss Ava Robinson eloped and were married by Esq. Faucett has returned to his home in Washington City. __ During the holidays Dr. H.M. Stewart of West Texas and his cousin James Stewart of Oxford chanced to meet in Roanoke, their first meeting in about 25 years. They are related to Dr. Trent. __ MRS. MARTHA FAUCETT NOW AT REST After many weeks of painful illness, Mrs. Martha Faucett, relict of the lamented Samuel Faucett, passed into rest at 2 o'clock last Friday afternoon. She was a few days over 70 years of age and had been a resident of Roanoke for many years. She was a devoted christian and her influence will be felt upon her family and friends for years to come. Saturday afternoon impressive funeral services were conducted by her pastor, Rev. H.C. Risner in the presence of a large congregation at the Baptist church. Thus passes away an aged and honored member of one of the largest and best families in this community. The many who now mourn for her and who ministered so tenderly to her, may find comfort in the thought that her sufferings are forever past and that they may meet her again in a fairer clime. __ File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/al/randolph/newspapers/newspape592gnw.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/alfiles/ File size: 5.9 Kb
