Edmonson is very sick at his home in Beat 4 and is not expected to live. __ LOCAL News A telegram was received here Monday evening announcing the death of Thomas Parker in Camp Hill. Mr. Parker was the father-in-law of Graves Shaffer. __ J.W. Farguson of Camp Hill visited the family of Mrs. M.A. Farguson the first of the week. __ Mrs. Noah Messer, aged 79 years, died near Corn House on Monday night. __ Jas. W. Jackson of Lime, moved to Texas yesterday. We trust he will find success. __ NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, December 9, 1903 LOCAL News Last week, Ralph Armstrong was tried and convicted at Tuskegee of murdering his cousin, Miss Allie Armstrong last October, and was sentenced to be hanged January 8, 1904. __ BACON LEVEL News Mr. Theo Johnson moved last week with his family to Atlanta. __ WEHADKEE News The matrimonial fever is prevailing in our community. Last Sunday, Billy Davis and Hiram Davis and Misses Mary and Katherine Benefield, two sisters, went over to Franklin, Georgia and were united in marriage. We wish for these young people much joy and happiness through life. __ HAPPY LAND News Haywood Dunn has nearly recovered from injuries received in a runaway several days ago. He narrowly escaped being dragged to death. The mule is a vain thing for safety. __ Tom Arnett and sons have bought the James Rice place. Mr. Rice has bought the Jesse Thompson place. __ LOCAL News Mrs. J.M. Jackson is seriously ill at her home near town. __ J.E. Dodgen and family moved to Atlanta last week. _ John J. Sutherlin will move to LaGrange and have charge of the creamery in that city. __ C.D. Patterson and family moved to Carrollton, Georgia to make their home for awhile. __ Mis Ocie Fargason was married in Camp Hill last Sunday morning to Mr. H.D. Land, a traveling salesman. They left Monday morning for Albany, Ga., where their home will be. The bride is a sister of Mrs. S.W. Lane of this place with whom she lately made her home. __ H.E. Hester has the small pox. His house is quarantined. __ ACCIDENTALLY SHOT About 6 o'clock Monday evening at his home one miles and a half from town, Elliott Waller was accidentally shot by a 32 calibre pistol in the hands of S.C. Akers. The two men were examining the pistol with a view to trading. The ball entred the left groin and ranged down into the muscles of the thigh. The surgeon's probe failed to reach it. The wound is not considered serious although Mr. Waller will be confined to his room for a week or so. __ George Carden, son of Alex Carden and Miss Clarasy Ward, daughter of L.W. Ward were married at the latter's residence Sunday by Rev. C.M. Dollar. __ Green Avery Jr. retunred to South Carolina after a visit to his father near Paran community. __ TRAMMELL ACQUITTED After a hard contested trial in the city court of Montgomery lasting a week, Byron Trammell was acquitted last Wednesday evening of the charge of murdering Charles E. Taylor. The jury was out only about fifteen minutes. The plea of the defendant was self defense. ___ NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, December 16, 1903 NAPOLEON News To the surprise of all, "Uncle" Burrel Nail has become convalescent since his late serious illness. We had no hope of his recovery. Esquire Bob Pate and Bro. Culpepper of Wedowee came over to see him last week. They brought their prayers with them in the form of much needed delicacies for the old man. By the way, that is the way the lord hears the prayers of the widow and the aged. His children became the vehicle of such conveyance. I take this opportunity of saying that if any one has any Santa Claus for Uncle Burrell and are willing to trust me with their blesisngs I will receipt them gladly and convey the boon to his own hands forthwith. He is certainly in needy circumstances. He needs a pair of warm blankets besides good wholesome food. ___ Johnny Taylor, one of our best citizens, has swapped places with Jack Benefield near Malone's Ferry and will move there immediately. He makes the change for the purpose of hunting and fishing as he is adept at both. Johnny is somewhat unique. He never belonged to any organization, human or divine, save the Confederate Army; never was on a jury, nor witness in court; never owed a debt he did not pay the day it was due and never sued anyone. He is near seventy years old and has killed more deer and turkeys than any man in the county. ___ L.L. Bailey is ill with swollen and sore throat. __ O.B. Colwell and family moved to Georgia yesterday. Tray Colwell has been a visitor in this community several days. __ LOCAL News J.A. Cadenhead has a new son born on the 13th. __ N.C. Carden has a new son, born last Wednesday. __ The Franklin News & Banner announces the marriage of Mr. Springer Tompkins to Miss Alma Mooty, the ceremony to be performed this evening. Miss Mooty is a sister of Messrs. A.A. and R.O. Mooty and has many friends here. __ The editor of The Leader acknowleges the receipt of an invitation to the marriage of Mr. John A. Pike to Miss Annie Copeland in Macon, Ga. and to the reception in LaGrange, Ga., the ceremony to occur today. Mr. Pike is a senior member of the firm Pike Bros. who built the Baptist church of this city and is a gentleman of high character. __ The Leader is in receipt of an invitation to the marriage of Mr. Otis Hopkins to Miss Sara Maddox at Whitesville, Ga., on the 23rd inst. Miss Maddox is a sister of Mrs. W.H. Brittain of this place. She is a lovely character and the groom elect is fortunate in winning her as a life partner. __ Mr. Allen Stoker was on the streets of Roanoke on Monday. He is now about 95 years of age and is remarkably well preserved. He thinks nothing of driving to town alone from his home some miles south of here. (NOTE: the next week's newspaper gives a correction to this: " Last week we referred by mistake to Mr. Henry Stoker an aged citizen as Allen Stoker. The latter is the name of the former's son. __ Prof. R.L. Boyd is teaching a fine school at New Hope near Wedowee. __ Miss Sallie Cumbie was in town Monday with her sister Mrs. Matthews. __ Charlie Robert Morris of North Carolina arrived Monday to spend a few days with relatives in his old home. __ W.C. Lane has taken charge of the Roanoke Grocery Company. __ John Knight died in Lowell last Thursday after a long illness. He left a wife and several children. The citizens of our town made up a purse of some fifty dollars and sent to the widow and children, to her mother's home at Sylacauga. __ Mrs. Fannie Andrews will go to Columbus to make her home with her son. She has been a popular and well known citizen of Roanoke for a number of years and will be missed. __ R.B.F. Robison spent Monday night in Roanoke as a guest of his nephew G.W. Robison. He was accompanied by his brother Wash who formerly lived in this part of the county, now living in St. Clair county. The latter had the misfortune to lose his wife last month. While here "Uncle Bob" remembered the Leader with a visit. He and his kind are the salt of the earth. __ N.W. Benefield called on The Leader yesterday and had his address changed for the paper from Wehadkee to Bear Creek in Marion County. He will leave in a few days. His father has already moved there. __ The little four year old daughter of Will Cardwell near Louina, was burned to death last Saturday when her clothing caught fire. __ Mr. H.L. Griffin returned last Thursday from Texas where he has spent the past several months. __ MR. PRESCOTT DEAD One of the best and most prominent citizens of this county died in Wedowee, when Mr. Charles A. Prescott breathed his last at 11 o'clock last Monday night. He had been sick only a few days and his death was due to heart trouble. The funeral will occur in Wedowee at 11 o'clock today. Mr. Prescott was 68 years of age and had been a resident of this county all his life. He was a prosperous merchant and farmer for many years and was an active member of the Baptist church. He enjoyed the respect and confidence of a wide circle of acquaintances. He leaves a wife and several grown children. Mr. Prescott will be greatly missed and sincerely mourned. ___ NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, December 23, 1903 WEDOWEE News Mr. Samuel Wright of Gridley community was happily married to Miss Minnie Young last Sunday night. Judge Stell Blake performed the ceremony. __ WEHADKEE News A.J. Green Jr., of Collins county, Texas is visiting his father's family at Omaha community, after an absence of seventeen years. His mother, who has been dangerously ill, we are glad to note is improving. __ CORBIN News Joe Parker and family and Mike McManus have gone to Texas. __ Wm. Huey has moved to Cleburne county. __ "Grandma" Bradley is seriously ill at this writing. It is hoped she may recover and live many years yet to bless her children. __ Leonard Wood died Tuesday of last week. __ A.P. Sikes and his son Warner are visiting the former's father near Belltown who is in bad health. __ LOCAL News Will Kent came back from Texas last week to stay awhile. __ Mrs. Nan Estes arrived from Texas on Monday to visit relatives in Truett community. __ Mrs. R.W. Anderson and daughter expect to go to Alex City and Oxford tomorrow to visit relatives. __ Last week we referred by mistake to Mr. Henry Stoker an aged citizen as Allen Stoker. The latter is the name of the former's son. __ An invitation has been received to the marriage of Mr. Henry Lewis Alsobrook to Miss Octavia Northen at Ashland. The event was to occur yesterday. We extend congratulations. __ J.A. Crouch's venerable mother of 78 years suffered a sad accident at the former's home at Bacon Level last Friday night. She fell from the rear veranda a distance of several feet crushing her left shoulder and knee. __ Invitations have been printed to the marriage of Mr. Harman Theron Burns to Miss Mollie Lebertha Moore. The event will occur at the home of the bride- elect's parents, Mr. and Mrs. G.W. Moore near Wedowee at half-past eleven o'clock on Sunday Dec. 27th. Mr. Burns is a graduate of the law department of the State University and is practicing in Wedowee. __ W.M. Cassels spent several days last week in LaGrange being called there by the critical illness of his son, Otis Cassels. The latter was accidentally shot by his uncle but at least reports was convalescing. __ W.A. Nunn and family including his mother and grandmother arrived here Sunday making their way back to Level Road, after a year's stay in Texas. They have had enough. __ Mrs. Bluford A. Sharp died at her home near Carrollton, Ga., Monday morning. Mrs. H.W. Davis, with her sister and daughter left at once to attend the funeral. __ The mother of J.C. Hornsby who is spending some time with her son, was taken quite sick on Sunday. __ Miss Alice Green died suddenly of heart disease at her home four miles west of town on Thursday. __ L.C. Huckeba was in town Monday, arriving from Texas for a visit. __ John Mayfield, son of Battle Mayfield, came in from Texas on Monday for a visit. __ Will Noel landed in Roanoke, coming to visit relatives at Flat Rock after a few years stay in Texas. __ Mr. and Mrs. A.A. Mooty and Mr. R.O. Mooty attended the marriage of their sister Miss Alma, to Springer Tompkins at Franklin, Ga., last Wednesday. __ NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, December 30, 1903 LOCAL News Mr. Newton is visiting his daughter Mrs. W.S. Kirk. __ J.A. Higgins of Louisiana is visiting his brothers A.J. and C.E. Higgins. __ J. Aiken of South Carolina spent Christmas with his sister Mrs. F.D. Hodges. __ W.D. Smith of Granger, Texas spent a few days past with his brother-in-law, R.G. Rowland. __ Warren Hester, son of H.E. Hester of this city, was married Sunday to Miss Bertha King at Newell. They will make their home at Omaha. __ L. Stephens and wife are visiting relatives in these parts and may remain most of the year. They have been in Texas the past twenty years. __ Wm. May of Sargent, Ga., visited his cousin W.T. Tenant last week. __ Jim Carden and Miss Ina Swann were married Monday at the home of S.N. Sledge, Esq., that gentleman officiating. __ Douglas Smith was in Roanoke last week enroute to Wedowee to visit relatives.
