Lewis went to Lanett last Wednesday to visit his mother who is dangerously ill. __ The fourth boy of H.C. Mayfield arrived at his father's home a few days ago. __ LOCAL News Mrs. E.A. Rowe of Dadeville is visiting her daughter Mrs. J.S. Chadwick. __ Emory Jordan, son of J. Fletcher Jordan, was married last Sunday to Miss Bettie Ussery of Bacon Level. __ T.S. Foster has gone to Montgomery to take up the duties of a traveling salesman for a harvesting machine company. __ Will R. Hester, a cotton buyer of this city, will be married today to Miss Ethel Moore in Columbus. __ Gib Green returned from Texas on Saturday night with his family. __ Born to Mr. and Mrs. Jack Martin, at the home of the latter's father W.A. Burden, a son. __ During the rush of work in this office, the Leader has had, part of the past two weeks, the valued assistance of J.B.C. Ambrose, recently connected with the Franklin News and Banner. Mr. Ambrose is an old and worthy newspaper man, having wielded an infuential pen for many years in Virginia journalism. During the civil war, this Veteran handled the gun with as much fidelity as he has since guided the pen. He was a member of Jackson's Artillery. While modest and retiring, he is an interesting and intelligent gentleman. __ NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, February 10, 1904 LOCAL News B.F. Thornton is spending a few days at home but will return to Lineville soon, where he is preparing to manufacture brick. He reports that town as growing rapidly. __ H.W. Davis and family are preparing to move this week to Anniston. __ A shooting affray occurred down at Bacon Level last Wednesday in which Jim Cater, a negro, handled the gun and Bailiff Tuck Hudson was the unwilling target. Mr. Hudson was in charge of a band of road workers when the trouble occurred. The night before he had gone to the negro's house to see him about working the road and also took occasion to warn him to keep his children from insulting the children of Mr. Hudson on their way to school. The latter states that the negro became abusive and profane and Hudson retured, with the understanding that he would settle the matter at another place. So when the negro appeared the next morning Mr. Hudson struck at him and the negro drew a pistol and fired. Mr. Hudson used rocks and then went to the house for his gun. The negro fired five shots in all but none took effect. That night, Baliff Hudson, Marshall Bonner and James Moon went to Cater's house and arrested him after threatening to break down this doors. He was tried before Justice East and placed under a bond of $750. on two charges. Being unable to give bond, he was carried to Wedowee jail. __ NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, February 17, 1904 NAPOLEON News Mr. Luther Shelnutt is rejoicing over the birth of a son at his house last week. __ Mrs. Mat Earnest has been quite feeble the last several days. __ HAPPY LAND News Thos. Slagle and the hands under his supervision have done some good work on the road south of here. __ A public road has just been established from Piper's Bridge to W.A. Halsey's. __ G. Brown has been confined to his room for two weeks with lagrippe. __ LEVONIA News "Uncle" Frank McMurry is yet with us in the flesh and is the oldest man in beat nine, lacking five or six years of being one hundred years old. __ LOCAL News J.E. Mann is spending a few weeks at home from his work in Mississippi. __ Luther Harper died in Atlanta on Saturday morning and was brought to Roanoke on the afternoon's train and carried to Rock Mills where the remains were interred on Sunday. The day of the burial the wife of the deceased died in the city and her remains were brought over and interred beside those of her husband. This double misfortune leaves small five children orphans. Mr. and Mrs. Haper formerly lived in Rock Mills where they have a number of relatives as well as in this city. __ Rodgers Pool was a pleasant caller to the Leader office yesterday and from him we learned the following news items from Viola: John C. Marshall's barn was burned MOnday night destroying 600 bushels of corn. Last Sunday Dan Stephens and Miss Lizzie Hodges were married. Miss Myrt Mantley of Roanoke is visiting Mrs. J.I. Mickle. __ Major J.M. Handley of Handley, Texas, came Monday to spend some day with his brothers W.A. and F.M. Handley. He had not visited Roanoke in about 20 years. __ Miss Lula Moore of Columbus is visiting her sister Mrs. W.R. Hester. __ Mrs. W.S. Bonner of Eatonton, Ga., arrived Monday to spend some time with her son Prof. Little. __ We learn that Robt. Young, son of Asbury Young, was married to Miss Cora Gladney near High Shoals last Thursday night. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, February 24, 1904 WEHADKEE News (by S.D. Lewis, correspondent) Mrs. V.D. Crouch has been quite sick but is improving. __ Henry Veal moved with his family a few days ago to Atlanta. __ There is some excitement in our community over the mineral that has been discovered. Robert Harlan has discovered mineral on his farm which has been tested by an expert and is pronounced to be gold and silver and is thought to be very valuable. Some of the same metal has been found in a well on our place. __ Harvey Enloe is confined to his room with smallpox. He is improving. __ D.M. Benefield has been quite sick with the measles. His entire family has had it. __ SPRINGFIELD Community News Prof. Gregg was called home Tuesday on account of the serious illness of his brother. __ Miss Addie Higgins is recovering from a serious spell of sickness. __ NAPOLEON News Mrs. Mat Earnest has presented our community with a twelve pound girl. This makes four boys and nine girls in the family. __ Miss Cora Gladney was married to Mr. Bob Young of Wedowee on the 11th inst. __ Miss Effie Gladney was united in marriage last Saturday to Rufus Adcock of Birmingham. __ LOCAL News Mrs. Henry Duke returned to Atlanta yesterday after a visit here. __ Mrs. M.A. Fargason left Tuesday for Roanoke where she will in the future reside with her daughter Mrs. S.W. Lane. The Camp Hill Times __ Jos. W. Robertson was married last Thursday to Mrs. Samantha Hester, both residing in Omaha beat. Elder J.W.H. Cliett officiated. Mr. Robertson is 63 years of age. __ Joshua Ballard, a former well known citizen of this county was in the Leader office Saturday. He is now living in Palmetto, Ga., but contemplates moving back to Roanoke. __ The Old Hickory Tennessee wagons are sold at T.C. Bingham and Co. __ T.C.
