Randall in this city. His wife's niece, Miss Daisy Jones, was married to W.V. Waters, of Ft. Valley, Ga., to which place they proceeded Monday. Rev. T.S. Hubert performed the ceremony, which was witnessed by only a few relatives and friends. ___ From "The LaGrange Reporter" D.B. STEPHENS After a lingering illness of several weeks with typhoid fever, Mr. D.B. Stephens passed away at 5:30 o'clock Saturday morning. A funeral was held from the First Baptist church Sunday morning at half past nine, by Dr. A.B. Vaughn. Mr. Stephens was one of the best citizens of LaGrange; quiet, unostentasious, loving his home and friends he was held in high esteem. He was a prominent member of the order of Odd Fellows, and the funeral was attended by the local lodge in a body, as well as a number from the West Point lodge. LaGrange has lost a good citizen, the Odd Fellows a faithful member, the family and relatives, ones who loved them and was true to every good impulse of his nature and who did all in his power to make others happy around him, and the world better for his having lived in it. The LaGrange Reporter ___ LEVONIA News Two negroes died of fever this week about two miles northwest of Level Road and the following white persons have been confined to their beds from two to eight weeks with typhoid or malarial fever, namely: G.C. Windsor, his wife and several children; Mrs. Nancy Carson; Columbus Carson; Posey Noles; and Misses Matilda Johns, Katie Townsend and Ella Hay. There are many other cases in the adjacent settlements. __ NAPOLEON News Mr. Perry Bailey, widower with three children, formerly of Haywood but now of Lanett, was married last Sunday at that place to Miss Janie Wheeler. __ Mrs. Mollie Barton of Peace community, while visiting relatives at Langdale, is prostrated with contraction of the stomach and her recovery is extremely doubtful. __ Mr. John Evans of Corbin community has recently been treated for a severe cancer that has been causing him considerable alarm, but he reports that present indications are that he will soon be entirely cured. His friends hope his good fortune will be lasting. __ WEHADKEE News The little two year old boy of Brit Walker is very sick with chills and fever. __ Thomas, the son of W.L. Gay is quite sick with typhoid fever. __ C.A. Alsobrook is confined to his room. A physician was called in and the bone of the right leg was found to be broken. __ On last Thursday, Mr. Luther Benefield and Miss Cora Green, daughter of J.R. Green of Omaha, went over to Georgia and were united in marriage. __ ROCK MILLS News Mrs. M. Duke has moved her family to LaGrange. __ Brook Benns has returned to Butler, Ga., after spending several days with his uncle, F.W. Hill. __ LOCAL News We have received an invitation to be present at the marriage of Miss Lola Agnes Dunkin of Roanoke to Dr. William Worth Stevenson of Roanoke, Ala., on Thursday evening, Oct. 6th at half after eight o'clock. Dr. Stevenson is a son of the late Rev. John B. Stevenson of the North Alabama Conference. The Alabama Advocate ___ Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Homer Fuller of LaFayette, Ala., announce the marriage of their daughter Mayme Gene to Rev. Henry M. Stevenson of the North Alabama Conference, Wednesday evening, Oct. 5th at four o'clock. The Alabama Advocate ___ LOCAL News A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Wallace last week. __ H. Nolan Awbrey of Franklin, Ga., has moved into the house recently vacated by J.A. Walls. He is clerking at John Faucett's. __ W.S. Dunkin is expected tomorrow to attend the marriage of his sister. __ NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, October 12, 1904 OFELIA Community News Fever is raging here. Miss Elva Knight is very ill at the present. __ Sadness passed over the home of Mr. Jim Cockrell Monday night. He was buried Tuesday in the afternoon. __ Mr. Andrew Pike is going to the Indian Territory, leaving at four o'clock this evening. __ WEDOWEE News Miss Ione Blake spent last week with her mother Mrs. Sam Henderson. __ THURMAN Community News Mrs. Martha Sweet spent last week in Rock Mills visiting Mrs. J.W. Sharman. __ Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Sharman visited the latter's mother Mrs. W.C. Lane yesterday. __ Mr. and Mrs. Jess Lane of Stroud visited relatives here last week. __ Mr. Joe Ussery happened to a very painful accident last week. While cutting wood a stick struck him in the eye completely destroying the sight. __ WEHADKEE News W.A.J. SWANN DEAD Capt. Wm. A.J. Swann died at his home nine miles northwest of Roanoke last Wednesday and was buried the following day at the family burying ground. The deceased was 69 years and one month old. He had been a resident of Randolph nearly all his life and had been a prominent factor in its development. He was esteemed by a large circle of friends. Capt. Swann leaves the following grown children: Dr. J.C. Swann; T.M. Swann and R.M. Swann and Mesdames J.S. Prescott; Lula Ridley; W.W. Hinton; and Z.T. McMurray. __ A NEGRO KILLED A message from Wedowee states that a negro named Joe Chappell was found dead on the bank of the river, three miles from Wedowee, yesterday morning. He had been shot by a shot gun. An inquest was being held at last accounts. __ LOCAL News Mrs. Baker is quite ill. __ Mrs. W.Y. Chewning joyfully informs us that her mother has come to make her permanent home with the former. __ Mrs. Mary Jeffers came Saturday to spend some time with her son J.A. Jeffers. __ Mrs. Tom Yarbrough died Sunday at Rock Mills and was buried at Wehadkee church, Rev. R W. Anderson conducting the services. __ Mrs. H.B. Reid has been critically ill for the past week but at this writing is reported better. Her illness has called to her bedside her brother Dr. H.T. Heflin and Miss Cooper a trained nurse of Birmingham, and her mother-in-law. __ Rev. W.W. Turner of this place and Rev. G.W. Hall of Five Points went on a trip to Oklahoma and the Indian Territory last week where they think of locating. __ Tom H. Radney authorizes us to change the address of his paper from Temple, Texas to Birmingham, Ala. He soon got enough of the big state. __ Glenn Jordan who lives a few miles below town continues quite sick. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, October 19, 1904 THURMAN Community News "Aunt" Melissa Russell, who has been in bad health for some time, was taken very ill on Sunday. __ WEHADKEE News Mrs. S.J. Lewis died last Monday at her home near LaFayette after a long illness of heart dropsy. Her remains were brought to Big Spring on Tuesday for interment. Religious services were conducted by Bro. J.H. Hood. She had been a consistent member of the Baptist church for forty years. __ LOCAL News Rev. W.W. Turner is back at home from a tour through the west. He visited the Panhandle portion of Texas, also Oklahoma and the Indian Territory and is delighted with the country. He has decided to transfer in a few weeks to the Indian Mission Conference which news will be read with regret by his many friends in Alabama. He reports that Rev. G.W. Hall of Five Points will also transfer. __ MARRIED IN ATLANTA Mr. and Mrs. B.F. Weathers went to LaGrange on Monday and proceeded to Atlanta the next day to attend the marriage of their only son, William Mickle Weathers, to Miss Irene DeLaney of Atlanta. The ceremony occurred Tuesday evening. The bridal couple will immediately begin housekeeping in the elegant new residence that Mr. Weathers erected in that city. The groom is a genial gentleman and is one of the best business men that has gone out from this place. He is to be congratulated upon winning a lady who is represented as possessing many graces. __ LOCAL News Miss Genie Clemmons of LaFayette has come to take a position in Whitman's photograph gallery. __ J.W. Stewart, ownder and proprietor of the Farmers Hotel at Wedowee, has just had the rooms of the hotel remodeled and repapered and is now prepared to accomodate the traveling public in the best of style. __ John H. Ray is doing some painting at Newell and asks us to state that he will be in that section the balance of the month and those having houses or furniture to paint should call on him. __ Mrs. Shanks is recovering from a spell of the fever but her daughter Lois is now ill of fever. __ NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, October 26, 1904 HAPPY LAND News Henry Green, B. Brown and E. Beaird attended the Christian Conference near Blake's Ferry this week. __ WEDOWEE News Mrs. L.J. Enloe is on the sick list. We sympathize with her in her continued illness. __ NAPOLEON News ( by G.O. Hill, correspondent) A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Barton since my last communication. This makes the ninth grandchild for your correspondent. __ Mrs. McGahee has gone on a visit to her sick sister in Meriwether County, Ga. __ A recent letter from Thomas Willingham who went to Texas last winter, says he is coming back and intends to stay this time. He has been twice to Texas. __ Charlie Hill is laid up, undergoing treatment by a physician for a chronic sore leg. __ Mrs. Ella Smith of Roanoke, who has lately returned from a visit to the World's Fair, showed me a beautiful silk quilt presented to her by her grand- aunt at Tiskelwa, Illinois, whom she visited on her trip. The donor, Mrs. Mary Haskill, is eighty-five years old and sister of my own dear mother and she pieced the quilt with her own hands. Her father, Charles Warburton, was an Englishman, and the first man to print a yard of calico in the United States. He was a resident of Rhode Island. Ella prizes her gift very highly, as indeed she should. G.O. Hill, correspondent. __ LOCAL News Mrs. H.B. Disharoon is quite ill. __ Mrs. T.S. Foster went to Mobile on Friday to visit Mr. Foster's sister and to recuperate her health. __ Will Clack and Miss Green of north Chambers county went to Georgia last Saturday and were married. __ Mr. and Mrs. Jno. A. Carlisle and Mr. and Mrs. Noel went to LaFayette on Saturday to attend the funeral of the 15 month old child of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Hart.
