Head, son of T.Z. Head, has recovered from a spell of the fever. --- Dick Gore, who was sent to the coal mines last April from Beat 5, died a few days ago. --- NAPOLEON News Marshall Shelnutt sold his fifty-three acre farm to Steve Prince for six hundred dollars cash and then unfortunately lost two hundred and ten dollars of it. This was an awful blow to a young man with an invalid wife. It will surely prove a curse to the one who found it and fails to return it to the owner. --- HAPPY LAND news Rev. F.M. Burditt is recovering from a light attack of the fever. --- MRS. DISHAROON DIES This community was shocked by the sudden and untimely death of Mrs. H.B. Disharoon which occurred last Sunday night at 10 o'clock. Only a few hours were given in which physicians and friends might labor to bring her back from the clutches of the grim monster, but in spite of all efforts the fair young woman passed into the long sleep of death. Only a year and a half ago Mrs. Disharoon came to Roanoke as Mrs. Reese, where she made a favorable impression upon the many she met. On Christmas, she became the wife of Dr. Disharoon. Her death so soon thereafter, far away from relatives, is exceedingly sad. Many were the tokens of sympathy called forth from the good people of Roanoke. In the presence of a large congregation at the Baptist church yesterday morning, Rev. J.P. Shaffer spoke tender, consoling words over the flower laden casket, after which the remains were interred in the public cemetery. ---- LOCAL News J.T. Talley went to Atlanta the first of the week. --- Tom Gauntt left yesterday for Memphis where he will pursue his medical studies. --- H.L. Griffin of this city and F.R. Adams of Glenn, Georgia left yesterday on a month's tour of Texas. --- Ernest A. Zobel arrived last Friday from Magnolia, Arkansas and will again be a regular citizen of Roanoke. --- Twin sons were born to Mr. and Mrs. Emory Jordan near town on Sunday night, only one of the twins living. --- The infant of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Kitchens is desperately ill. The former's mother is here and Dr. Haynes has been wired for. --- Patillo Cook, son of A.A. Cook, and aged 20 years, was married in Lowell last Sunday to Miss Lila Riley, Rev. J.. Yates officiating. This is Bro. Yates' first experience in this role but he performed like a veteran. --- Mrs. Mollie Weather is not making her home with her aunt, Mrs. Sue Pittman. --- Miss Clara Weedan a trained nurse of Atlanta, is here nursing Frank Manley in his serious illness of typhoid fever. --- Miss Gabie Cameron has returned to her home near LaGrange accompanied by her grandmother Mrs. H.L. Watson and the former's little niece Rena Price who will make a visit of some days. --- George S. Reese of Rome and Walker Reese of Tennille, Georgia attended the funeral of their sister, Mrs. H.B. Disharoon yesterday, returning in the afternoon. These gentleman have the sympathy of the entire community on this sad mission. --- Miss Verna Hester who is critically ill with typhoid fever, is being attended by Miss Carmichael, a trained nurse from Atlanta. H.E. Hester, father of the former, is recovering from an illness of fever. --- Miss Rosa Cardwell, daughter of W.W. Cardwell, died Sunday of typhoid fever, near Viola. --- NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, October 10, 1906 ROCK MILLS News Mr. and Mrs. Ben Anderson of West Point spent Sunday with J.S. Yates and wife. --- Mrs. Hallie O'Neal is visiting Mrs. Joe Keeble. --- Tom Yarbrough of this place and Miss Kentsie Dean of Standing Rock were married at Evansville on Sunday. --- Sidney Farr had the misfortune of losing two fingers at the saw mill on Thursday. --- A SAD DEATH On Sunday, September 30th at 9 o'clock a.m., the death angel visited the home of Mr. and Mrs. W.W. Cardwell, residing two miles southeast of Louina, taking from their midst their twenty year old daughter who had been ill a short while with the fever. Miss Rosa was a model young lady in her community and was loved by all who knew her. She leaves a father, mother, three brothers and five sisters, together with a host of friends to mourn her death. Interment was at Concord on Monday at 1 o'clock p.m, in the presence of an unusually large crowd. Rev. G.D. Hunt conducted the funeral rites. May God comfort and console the deceased's family in this sad hour of bereavement. --- CARD OF THANKS We take this method of expressing our appreciation of the untiring devotion of our friends and neighbors in watching with us and waiting on our dear father and grandfather during his last and fatal illness. Kind friends, we thank you from the depth of our hearts. May God in heaven reward each and every one of you for your faithfulness in the prayer of the children and grandchildren of the late Elder J.W.H. Cliett. The Family, Roanoke, Ala., Oct 8, 1906. --- LOCAL News Mr. and Mrs. R.A. Liles who were called to this county by the death of the latter's sister Miss Rosa Cardwell, returned to Birmingham on Monday. --- HORRIBLY MANGLED Ben C. Brown, a former citizen of this county, and a son of Mr. Ab Brown, was run over and instantly killed by a train in West Point about 9 o'clock last Sunday night. How he came to meet his death is unknown. He was so badly mangled that he remains were recognized only by chance. The remains were shipped to Roanoke on Tuesday morning where they were met by friends and members of the family. An examiniation of the body was then made and the only mark of identification was a scar on one thumb. The party proceeded to Broughton Ridge where the interment was made. --- AGED MINISTER DIES Elder John W.H. Cliett, one of the oldest citizens and best known ministers of Randolph county, passed away last Friday evening at 8 o'clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J.E.J. Taylor, about four miles north of Roanoke. Elder Cliett was a man highly esteemed by a large circle of acquaintances. He had done much service for his fellow men in the long period of life allotted him. Mr. Cliett was born in Fayette County, Georgia on August 18, 1823. He joined the Primitive Baptist church at 18 years of age and was ordained to the ministry at age 21, thus serving his church in that capacity 62 years. He was moderator of the Beulah Baptist Association about 20 years. The funeral occurred at Zion's Rest, four miles north of Roanoke at 3 o'clock Friday afternoon. The services were conducted by Elder W.R. Avery. Notwithstanding the inclement weather, a large congregation witnessed the services including a number of friends from Roanoke. ---- LOCAL News R.W. Cauthen of Titusville, Florida spent a few days last week with his brother H.H. Cauthen while enroute to his old home in South Carolina. --- A boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. Brit Jones near town on Sunday. --- Mr. and Mrs. Ed Causey are rejoicing over the arrival of a son on the 4th inst. --- NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, October 17, 1906 WEHADKEE News J.E. Stitt and children of LaGrange, Georgia visited relatives at this place Saturday and Sunday. Mr. Stitt had the sad misfortune to lose his wife a few weeks ago. --- William Fincher is recovering from a severe spell of typhoid fever. --- LOCAL News James F. Hester went to Delta in Clay county last Thursday, where he will teach school. --- A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Mark Jordan a week ago this evening at the home of the latter's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.T. Baird. --- Mr. Jeff Roberts, while unloading some cotton at Scheussler's warehouse Friday was painfully hurt in a runaway, his team being frightened by a locomotive. --- W.W. Cofield, a good citizen of Lanett, father of Rev. W.P. Cofield and Mrs. W.A. Widner, was in Roanoke yesterday making arrangements to move to Roanoke. He purchased the house on Wedowee street occupied by R.M. Causey and expects to move the first of January. Roanoke is glad to have such good men as Mr. Cofield among us. --- Mrs. D.M. Yates has as her guests her mother Mrs. S.F. Walker and her sister Mrs. E.B. Hearn, both of Rock Mills. --- J.P.
