The friends of Messrs. Phillips and Dunn are trying to save these sick men's crops. --- WHITE'S CHAPEL News Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Burdett, and Robt. Kirby and wife, who have been visiting relatives at this place, returned to their home near Glenn, Georgia today accompanied by their grandmother Mrs. Rebecca Adams, who will spend some time with them. --- Mrs. Robert Kirby is ill at this writing at the home of her parents Mr. and Mrs. Dave Burdett. --- BACON LEVEL News Mrs. Bob Brewer died at the home of her father, A.A. Ussery, Friday evening, and was buried here Saturday afternoon. The sympathies of their friends go out to the relatives in their bereavement. --- Yesterday morning, occurred the marriage of Miss Valera Ussery of this place to Mr. J.W. Adamson of Glenn, at the residence of the bride's uncle, W.B. Meacham, Esq., the ceremony being performed by the latter. After the ceremony, accompanied by friends, they went to the singing at Pleasant Grove and then to the home of the groom's father. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C.L. Ussery and the bride and groom have many friends who wish for them much happiness. --- Yesterday afternoon, while returning from the singing, Miss Dera Ussery, daughter of Z.T. Ussery, and John I. Hudson went to the home of Esquire Henderson at Evansville, Georgia where they were united in marriage. We extend our congratulations and good wishes. --- VIOLA News We regret to learn that two of Mr. Thomas Blake's children are quite sick with pneumonia. --- LOCAL News Miss Sarah Arnett left yesterday to visit relatives in Texas. --- Mrs. Mariah Moon returned from a visit to Merkel, Texas on Saturday accompanied by her grandson Hubert Moon. --- A sad case is reported from near Almond community. The twin sons of Mrs. Sallie Wood, Bird and Walter, were taken ill of typhoid fever some weeks ago. Bird died Sunday night and was buried at Pleasant Hill on Monday. Rev. Geo. Stoves conducted the funeral service. At this writing there seems to be some hope of Walter's recovery. --- The Editor of the Leader received the following news from his esteemed friend and correspondent at Wehadkee ( S.D. Lewis) who reports: "My oldest daughter Cora died Saturday evening at 2 o'clock after a short illness of dropsy. She was just in the bloom of life, being just 24 years old. She had been a member of the Baptist church for several years. Funeral services were conducted Sunday evening at Big Spring by Elder N. H. Layton." --- Mrs. B.F. Weathers suffered a stroke of paralysis on Sunday night and is very low. Her son, W.M. Weathers of Atlanta and her daughter Mrs. Wade Wood of Birmingham are at her bedside. --- NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, June 12, 1907 ROANOKE R.F.D. No. 1 News Yesterday while in the river bathing above Wedowee, a son of Pallis Elder got into deep water and was drowned before aid could be had. The remains were brought to New Hope for burial today. The parents have the sympathy of the entire community. --- John Benefield and Miss Mattie Lee Crowder drove over to Georgia yesterday and got married. --- MRS. B.F. WEATHERS DEAD Mrs. B.F. Weathers succumbed at an early hour on Thursday morning to a second stroke of paralysis. Her death occurred at her home in ths place, witnessed by her faithful husband, three children, Mr. W.M. Weathers, Mrs. J.R. Sims, Mrs. Wade Wood and other relatives and friends. The funeral services occurred at 10 o'clock Friday morning from the Baptist church, conducted by her pastor, Rev. George Stoves, assited by Rev. T.J. Porter. Mrs. Goodwin directed the music. A profusion of flowers covered the casket and many lovely designs were borne by the Daughters of the Confederacy, who attended the funeral in a body, wearing their colors in mourning for this deceased member. The tribute paid her by the minister was beautiful. Then the interment occurred in the city cemetery. Mrs. Weathers was 62 years and three months of age. She was born near the present site of Roanoke and had lived here all of her life. She had been a member of the Methodist church since 15 years of age. Many are the kind deeds dispensed by her generous hands in all these years. Up to the last, though feeble in body, she was a faithful attendant upon the services of the church she loved. --- LOCAL News K. Anderson died in Lowell community last night after a long illness. --- Mrs. E.E. Turner of Glenn, Georgia is with her sister Mrs. W.C. Hunter this week. --- Lee Trammell, a merchant at Five Points, formerly a citizen of Roanoke, was married last Thursday to Miss Julia Thomas near LaFayette. Rev. F.C. Francis officiated. --- Mrs. Cora Mayfield Thomas is visiting relatives in Roanoke. --- Mrs. John Bell of Anniston spent some days past with her sister Mrs. Schuessler. --- B.R. Williams of Hogansville visited his sister Mrs. W.C. Hunter on Sunday. --- W. Wade Wood, a successful business man of Birmingham, was here Friday to attend the funeral of his wife's mother and proceeded shortly afterward to the bedside of his nephew Walter Wood at Almond, who died on Friday. --- NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, June 19, 1907 HAPPY LAND News "Aunt" Susan Rice fell off the piazza last Tuesday and dislocated one of her shoulders. --- Otis Brown is suffering from an attack of rheumatism. --- ROANOKE R.F.D. No. 1 News "Uncle" Tommie Clack, an aged and respected citizen, died at his daughter's home in Phenix City last Saturday morning and the remains were brought back to New Hope for burial. Uncle Tommie had lived in this section for a long time but was making his home with his daughter at the time of his death. He was 91 years old the last day of May. He leaves five children, thirty-eight grandchildren and thirty-two great grandchildren, besides a large number of friends to mourn his death. --- LOCAL News Mr. E.A. Zobel of Roanoke will superintend the building of the addition to the LaFayette College. The LaFayette Sun. --- Edwin Pittman, little son of N.E. Pittman, died Sunday at the latter's home near town. The little fellow was brought from the Talladega School for the Deaf some weeks ago, ill of fever, and he grew gradually worse until death claimed him. The interment was at Levanon at 11 o'clock on Monday. --- Mrs. Dora Taylor was operated on Thursday for the relief of her injured knee which was hurt some months ago in jumping from a buggy. --- Mrs. M. Pruett of St. Stephens is visiting her daughter Mrs. Hurt. --- NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, June 26, 1907 VIOLA News Mrs. Mattie Gay and her daughter Miss Eva of Level Road visited the family of Mr. Thos. Blake Sr. last Saturday. --- Mrs. Emily Wilder, after a long and painful sickness, died last Monday night. She was buried Wednesday at Macedonia church. We sympathize with her children and grandchildren who mourn the loss of this good woman. --- ROANOKE R.F.D. No. 1 News Mrs. J.T. Chewning is improving slowly. --- ROCK MILLS News Edgar Smith and Miss Nannie Hill were married Sunday afternoon at the home of Esq. Hearn. --- Mrs. Iva Moon of Langdale spent last week with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Hollis. --- John Harper, who returned from Texas recently, died at the home of his father, W.M. Harper last Saturday night. He was buried in the Rock Mills cemetery Sunday afternoon. --- Jim B. Crockett of Glenn, Georgia spent the day here last Sunday. Jim is a fine fellow and is always welcomed. --- RESOLUTIONS ON THE DEATH OF MRS. JENNIE MICKLE WEATHERS Again death has claimed one of our number. On the morning of June 6th, Mrs. Jennie Mickle Weathers, wife of our townsman Mr. B.F. Weathers, and a member of the F.P. Randle Chapter of the U.D.C., passed away to the "great beyond" from which no traveler returns, leaving a void in the home of her family and the hearts of her friends. We humbly bow in submission to the will of a great and good God, and be it, therefore resolved, 1. We, as a United Chapter, tender our heartfelt sympathy to her bereaved husband, daughters and son, for we, too, feel her loss. 2. A copy of these resolutions be sent to The Leader for publication and a copy sent to the family. 3. A page in our Chapter record be dedicated to the memory of Mrs. Jennie Mickle Weathers, born Feb. 22, 1845, married to Mr. B.F. Weathers January 6th, 1867, died June 6th, 1907. Mrs. S.S. Holliday is sick. --- Mrs. Emil Zobel is reported quite sick. --- Mr. William Mitchell of Talboton is spending a few days with his son, W.E. Mitchell. --- Mrs. R.B. Mooty and daughter Mrs. Springer Tompkins have been visiting relatives here several days since. --- Nixon Lucas returned Friday from a trip to North Carolina where he was called by the illness and death of his aged father. --- The remains of Dr. G.H. Nichols, who died in Columbus, were carried through Roanoke to Forrester's Chapel for burial last Saturday. Deceased was an uncle of F.P. Nichols who attended the funeral. --- Mrs. P.C. Hammonds and children of Dayton, Texas are visiting the former's parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.W. Cofield and other relatives here. --- Miss Pearl Presnal left Friday to make her home with her brother E.M. Presnal, in Oklahoma. --- Mr. J.N. Briskey is very ill at the home of his son, C.N. Briskey. --- Mrs. S.A.
