Adams died at his home near this place yesterday a.m., at 4 o'clock. The funeral services occurred at Rock Springs today, conducted by Revs. Elder and C.M. Dollar. To his many friends and relatives we offer heartfelt sympathy. --- On last Sunday morning at 9 o'clock, Mr. John Clark was married to Miss Effie Broach near Corn House. --- LOCAL News Friends in Roanoke will be pained to learn that M.R. Dudley was killed by a train at some point in South Alabama about two weeks ago. Mr. Dudley was a popular visitor to Roanoke during two summers in late years. --- Wilson McVay, white, escaped from the Wedowee jail on Sunday. --- Little Bob Brannan is quite ill with scarlet fever. --- Mr. John Briskey died at the home of his son, C.N. Briskey in this place last Thursday and was taken to Milltown for burial. --- NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, July 10, 1907 ROANOKE R.F.D. No. 1 News The infant of R.E. Brown that is being raised by Mrs. G.W. Clack, is quite sick and grave fears are felt as to the outcome. --- ROCK MILLS News Elijah Hollis and Miss Lela Wilkerson went down to Evansville and were married on Sunday. --- Miss Ione Padgett of Spartanburg, South Carolina is the guest of her cousin Miss Blanche Sims. --- LOCAL News S.S. Waller, accompanied by his son Jesse, left Sunday for Hot Springs, Arkansas. --- NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, July 17, 1907 NAPOLEON News J.P. Sheppard's wife has been quite ill a week or more but is some better now. --- Ryol Bowen's wife was taken severely ill Wednesday night. --- Mr. Dave Hill, widower of Haywood, was wedded to Miss Wright, upon the Little River on July 4th. --- WEHADKEE News Mr. John Hooton and daughter Miss Mary Lou, went up to Brockville last Friday to attend the funeral of the former's sister, Mrs. Rice who died on Thursday. --- The infant child of Mr. and Mrs. Turner Hester died last Wednesday and was buried Thursday at Big Spring. We extend sympathy to the bereaved parents. --- SOLDIER'S GRAVES While in Richmond, Virginia at the Old Soldiers Reunion some weeks ago, some of the veterans from this section listed the names of soldiers of the 13th and 14th Alabama whose graves they found marked in Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, VA., and The Leader is asked to publish them. K 13th Alabama ----- LOCAL News Miss Mary Jim Manley of Roanoke is visiting her aunt, Mrs. C.M. Prescott. The Wedowee Star --- Mrs. George H. Dunn Jr., formerly Miss Belle Striplin, now of Atlanta, is visiting her parnets in Roanoke. Her marriage some months ago was romantic in that the man she married was at the time seriously ill in Texas. --- J.Z. Collier has returned from Hot Springs and reports his health considerably improved. --- The three brothers of A.E. White, the groom of this afternoon, one from Valdosta and two from Nashville, arrived yesterday to attend the White - Faucett nuptials. --- Russell M. Striplin visited relatives in Roanoke last week. He is now in the cotton business at Corinth, Miss. --- Z.J. Wright is preparing to leave for Hot Springs in a day or so. --- J.E. Dodgen, with his wife and two children and his wife's brother Harmon Heath, came over from Altanta on Sunday to spend a week or so with the former's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.P. Dodgen near town. --- NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, July 24, 1907 ROANOKE, R.F.D. Route 1 News Otis Brown continues quite sick. --- Mrs. C.C. Hodges returned to her home at Avondale on Saturday after spending some time with her mother Mrs. E.A. Floyd. --- Talmage Orr has the fever. He is quite sick. --- The infant child of R.E. Brown died last Wednesday night at G.W. Clack's. Mrs. Clack was raising the child and had become much attached to it. It was sad, indeed, for her to lose the child. --- Mrs. Sarah Jane Smallwood died at her daughter's home, Mrs. G.W. Clack, on last Friday and was buried Saturday afternoon at Mt. Zion. She was making her home at Mr. Clack's and was sick only a few days. She was seventy years old and leaves four children and a number of friends to mourn their loss. --- WEHADKEE News Dr. Wood reports a great deal of sickness in this section. Mrs. H.C. Mayfield has the fever. J.D. Head is sick. Mrs. W.C. Enloe is on the sick list. --- Mr. Emariah J. Hester died last Sunday at his home in Potash community, after a short illness of brain fever. The funeral services were conducted by Elder James Bagwell at Hillabahatchee. The deceased was just in the bloom of life, being 36 years old. He was one of our best citizens and his sad demise is lamented by all. He was a member of the Primitive Baptist church and lived a christian life. He leaves a wife, six children and a large circle of relatives and friends to mourn his death. Before dying, he called his family to his bedside and bade them farewell and said he was "going home." We extend our sympathy to all the bereaved ones and urge them to seek comfort in Jesus who can heal all our sorrows. --- HAPPY LAND News "Grandma" Smallwood died at Mr. Geo. Clack's yesterday. Mrs. Clack is a daughter of the deceased. This will make the third death that has occurred from that home and carried away for burial since the first of June. --- Robert E. Brown's infant died last Wednesday and was buried the following day at Antioch, where the child's mother was laid to rest a few months previous. --- Haywood Dunn is on the sick list. --- Dr. Pate was called to the bedside of "Aunt" Susan Rice last Tuesday and is still treating her. She is the victim of a horrible cancer and can not long survive. It has already affected one of her eyes. --- BACON LEVEL News C.C. Hudson has returned from a trip to Lineville. His sister, Mrs. W.E. Blanks, came home with him. --- We regret to chronicle the death of Thomas M. Turner, who, after a long illness, succumbed to the grim monster death on July 15th. Mr. Turner was a good man, well liked by all of his neighbors and acquaintances. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Chas. Wolford and the interment was in Bacon Level cemetery with Masonic honors. ---- Mrs. T.M. Turner has sold her place here to D.L. Bishop and is living with her brother, Mr. John Lee, near Stroud community. --- ROCK MILLS News Glover Keeble and Miss Cora Crouch were married at the home of the bride on Sunday evening at 8 o'clock, Esq. Hearn officiating. --- A QUIET HOME MARRIAGE At the residence of Mr. E.P. Mickle of Roanoke, Ala., July 17th, 1907, Mr. Addison E. White of S.C. and Miss Emma L. Fausett of Alabama were united in the holy bonds of wedlock, Dr. Shaffer officiating. Mr. White belongs to a good Alabama family and represents the Simmons Hardward Co. in the Carolinas. Miss Fausett belongs to a fine old Alabama family and is a handsome woman, a graduate of the Roanoke College. She is a teacher. They left immediately for a trip to the coast and will be at home in Spartanburg, S.C. after Aug. 1st. --- LOCAL News John S. Burdett is spending a week visiting relatives in Hogansville, Newnan and Atlanta. --- Mrs. Mamie Ellis and children of Birmingham are visiting the former's sisters, Mrs. John Radney and Mrs. George Stoves. --- Mrs. S.S. Smith left this morning for the Jamestown Exposition to accompany a large shipment of dolls from her doll factory to be sold there. --- Mrs. Stroud Hanners of Columbus is visting the family of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Ray. --- Mrs. Elbert Pittman is very ill with the fever at her home near town. --- NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, July 31, 1907 LEVONIA News Mrs. Vanney Wright died day before yesterday and was buried at Rock Springs yesterday. --- ROCK MILLS News Mrs. Stroud Hanner of Columbus spent Friday with her sister, Mrs. G.W. Holley. --- Mrs. Will Bennett is on the sick list. --- KILLED BY LIGHTNING A terrible tragedy occurred at Five Points during a thunder storm Saturday afternoon. Mrs. Jesse Ransom was standing before the mirror combing her hair when a current of lightning descended the chimney and struck her dead, mutilating and burning her body horribly. Her husband was also struck and dangerously wounded. We learned Monday that he would probably recover. The house became ignited but the flames were extinguished by neighbors. ---- LOCAL News Captain B.F. Weathers left last Wednesday to spend several days with his son in Lithia Springs. --- Mr. and Mrs. Ben Laws of Atlanta have been spending several days with their aunt, Mrs. J.T. Striplin. --- Born to Rev. and Mrs. H.M. Stevenson last Wednesday afternoon, a daughter. Rev. and Mrs. Stevenson are at the home of the latter's parents Mr. and Mrs. T.H. Fuller. The LaFayette Sun --- Ross Mooty, having recovered from his illness, went up to Wedowee on Friday accompanied by his cousin Miss Ethel West. --- The Leader enjoyed a call last week from our friend of former years, Charles O. Griggs who is now city attorney in Tyler, Texas. His success in the west is a source of gratification to his friends here of his native section. --- Mrs. John H. DeLoach died last Wednesday at her home in LaFayette and was buried the following day at Mt. Pisgah. Elder J.T. Satterwhite conducted the services. Mrs. DeLoach was the eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Belcher and has been an invalid for many months. She leaves a husband and four children. ---- Miss Matilda Zobel received the sad message on Saturday that her niece, Miss Bertha Stiritz, had been drowned at her home in Illinois. The deceased will be remembered by many of our younger folks, having visited Roanoke some five years ago. ---- Mr. R.J. Higgins arrived from Florida on Friday to spend the remainder of the summer with his daughter Mrs. Wade Carlisle. He has many friends in Roanoke who are always pleased to see him. --- The year old infant of Mr. and Mrs. E.C. Arnett died Friday night and was buried Saturday at the family burying ground near Bacon Level. The friends of the bereaved parents sympathize with them. --- Mrs. Valesta Allen has moved to Roanoke to live near her brothers and sisters. We regret to lose Mrs. Allen from our town and wish her happiness in her new home. The Goodwater Enterprise ---- Mrs. Elbert Pittman is reportedly improving from her illness of the fever. A trained nurse, Miss Pearl Stallings is now with her. --- Mrs. Lee Ward and little child of Jacksonville are visiting relatives in Roanoke. --- A SUDDEN DEATH The community was shocked by the news of the sudden death of Mr. John M. Arnett which occurred at his home in this place at 10 o'clock last night. He first complained of an attack of something like colic and died a short while afterward. He was a steady, good citizen, and well liked by his friends. The funeral will occur this afternoon at Salem church. ---- J.A.
