No. 1 News J.L. Redmond and family of Columbus are visiting his father's family, H.H. Redmond. --- J.W. Stephenson and family of Washington, Georgia are visiting the family of his father C.H. Stephenson. --- BACON LEVEL News Mrs. S.J. Holder arrived from Texas on Thursday and is at the home of her father M.J. Ussery. Her husband, who has been teaching out there will arrive later. --- ROCK MILLS News Mrs. Estelle Kenney of Atlanta is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. N.T. Foster. --- LOCAL News Mrs. A.J. Noles of Atlanta arrived Friday to visit relatives in Roanoke and Wedowee. --- Mrs. Josie Taylor, Mrs. S.J. Holder and a son of Jim Park, all of Texas, arrived last week to visit relatives in this vicinity. --- Dr. Marshall was in town yesterday and reported considerable typhoid fever in the Viola community. In the family of Fred Adamson there have been four cases of the fever. Mrs. Adamson is still sick and a daughter, Miss Carrie, died some two weeks ago. --- J.S. Stephenson was married Sunday to Miss Annie Hatcher of Kite, Georgia and came on a visit to the former's parents, Mr. and Mrs. C.H. Stephenson near Milltown. The Leader extends congratulations to the joyous pair. --- As we go to press we learn that Mrs. Guinn, wife of the late J.M.K. Guinn, is dead at her home at Lanett. She will be buried tomorrow. The Wedowee Star --- W.T. Arnett of Montgomery and Davis Arnett of Lineville were called here last week by the sad death of their brother J.M. Arnett. --- Mr. A.F. Simmons of LaGrange and Mrs. Corine Campbell and three children of Atlanta are visiting the family of H.G. Ruggles. --- Mrs. Sue Watson and Mrs. R.P. Price and children have gone to visit relatives at LaGrange and Greenville, Georgia. --- J.A. Hardy returned last Wednesday from Tate Springs and reports his health considerably improved. --- Mr. B.A. Sharp of Carrollton came over Monday to spend a few days with Mrs. Mary Sharp and family. --- Mrs. W.W. Cofield and granddaughters Misses Ava and Elsie Widner, left on the A & B on Monday to spend a week with relatives at Abbott's Ford, Georgia. --- Chas. V. Robison of Florida is visiting his brother G.W. Robison. --- J.P. Hollinger of Florida is visiting his brother-in-law, M.W. Carlisle. --- NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, August 14, 1907 NAPOLEON News Ben Langley's dwelling house was struck by lightning Tuesday and entirely consumed by fire. The family were absent at the time which perhaps was a blessing as a dog left in the house was killed. --- Mr. Will Moore's wife who was dangerously ill last week, is now on the road to recovery. --- The wife of Geo. Earnest Jr. is very ill this week, affected with paralysis. --- ROCK MILLS News Jesse Whatley and four sisters of Greenville are visiting Mr. and Mrs. W.Z. Yates. --- W.B. Swint and Mrs. Mary Stevens were married at the home of Rev. A.J. Coats on Sunday afternoon. --- Mrs. Bowls of LaGrange is visiting her daughter Mrs. Will Bennett. --- ROANOKE R.F.D. No. 1 News J.G. Gay of Muscadine spent several days in this community. He came to bring his mother on a visit. Mr. Gay returned home today. --- C.T. Orr of Columbus came up last Thursday to see his brother W.T. Orr who has the fever. He is some better at this time. --- LOCAL News Chas. F. Adams arrived Sunday from Sardis, Miss., to spend a few weeks with relatives here. --- J.B. Taylor of Quanah, Texas is visiting in this section. --- Mr. and Mrs. Abner Paschal of Gadsden arrived Monday to visit the family of their nephew, Mr. Kyle. --- An electrical storm occurred on Monday. A boy in the family of a negro named Yancey was killed by lightning and the entire family was badly shocked. --- Our friend, Wm. J. Stewart of Temple, Texas writes The Leader that the first bale of cotton marketed in Temple this season was raised and sold by a former Randolph County boy, Wash Meacham. --- Mrs. L.N. Webster of North Carolina is visiting the family of her father J.W. Ray. --- Mrs. William A. White and little granddaughter Lurline went to Columbus Monday to visit relatives. --- Otis Snuggs was in our office Saturday. He, with his mother and her other children, is up from Langdale visiting relatives at Lane's Chapel. --- Our old colored friend, Willis McGuire of Rock Mills, came around Wednesday afternoon with a nice watermelon which he raised himself. He remembers the editor in this manner every year. He brought the first one of the season. --- We regret exceedingly to note the death of Miss Louie Weaver, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F.A. Weaver, which occurred near Viola last Thursday. The interment occurred at Concord on Friday. The young lady was a victim of typhoid fever which is raging in that community. --- NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, August 21, 1907 NAPOLEON News Mrs. Mollie Traylor Yates was buried at Zion on the 2nd Sunday. Sister Yates had been an invalid twenty-odd years. She left a husband and daughter to mourn her loss. Her Christian fortitude and implicit faith in her Saviour was remarkably manifest throughout her long affliction. --- CORBIN News Jeff and Sam Smith returned last week from a trip to Sand Mountain where they say whey will move to this fall. --- Mrs. Mary Ann McLeod of near Goldville is visiting her brother J.J. Fields and other relatives in this community. --- P.K. Pittman, one of the old timers in the Farmer community, was kicked by a horse and seriously hurt at his home on Friday. Two ribs were broken on the left side just below the heart and he is reported to be in a critical condition. The Graham, Texas Leader Note from the Editor: The above named gentleman is a brother of Messrs. M.P., J.M., W.W. and A.J. Pittman of Randolph County, Alabama and many friends here will regret to learn of his misfortune. ---- MR. HILLEY WEDS Mr. J.W. Hilley, a well known livery man of this place, sprang a pleasant surprise on his Roanoke friends by bringing in a pretty and winsome bride on the noon train last Wednesday. On the 12th inst., Mr. Hilley was married to Miss Maggie May at Cedar Bluff, Cherokee County, this state. This is the groom's old home county and he is to be congratulated that the love of one so far was not waned during the months of absence. He has made a number of friends here. Mrs. Hilley will be cordially welcomed to her new home. ---- MRS. SLAY DEAD At an early hour last Thursday morning, Mrs. Mattie Slay died at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. John Fausett in this place, where she had made her home since the latter's marriage, Mrs. Fausett being her only child. Mrs. Slay had been in declining health for several years and was an invalid the last year or two of her life. But during all this time she was the recipient of the most tender ministrations of the devoted family and kind neighbors. Mrs. Slay was one of the oldest residents of Roanoke, having spent her life in this vicinity since girlhood. She was born Jan. 2, 1831 and was the daughter of the late Captain B.F. Ford. Her husband, Andrew J. Slay, died of measles in the Confederate Army. Since 18 years of age she has been a consecrated member of the Methodist church. She illustrated in life the christian graces of faith and fortitude, humility and resignation. Her influence in the home and the community will abide as a sweet incense forever. Friday morning at 10 o'clock the funeral services were conducted from the Baptist church. Rev. R.W. Anderson delivered a fitting eulogy of the deceased and spoke comforting words to the living. The interment was in the city cemetery. ---- LOCAL News Mrs. Rob Priddy of LaGrange is visiting the family of Mr. Cassels. --- F.P. Nichols and family attended a family reunion at Cusseta last week. --- Mrs. H.J. Holliday has been critically ill for some days but is some better at this writing. --- A.J. Langley returned last week from a stay at Eastbrook Springs and is considerably improved. --- MIss Josie Lancaster of LaGrange arrived Friday to visit her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. J.P. Dodgen. --- J.D. Lane and family, after spending some time with relatives in and near Roanoke have proceeded to Prattville, their future home. --- C.G. Lovvorn left for a trip to Oklahoma on Monday accompanied by his sister- in-law, Mrs. Lovvorn who has been visiting out here but who lives in the new state. --- Mr. and Mrs. B.J. Ford, Mr. and Mrs. R.H. Ford, Owen Charlie and Bev Ford Jr. of Wedowee attended the funeral of Mrs. Mattie Slay in Roanoke last Friday. ---- W.R. Green, accompanied by his wife and two children, arrived Saturday from Port, Oklahoma to spend a month or two with relatives in this county. --- Miss Lilla Cato of Grantville, Georgia is visiting the family of R.T. West. --- Mrs. H.T. Matthews is visiting relatives at Vaughn, Georgia. --- A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Emil Zobel last week. --- Her friends will be pleased to note that Mrs. Dora Taylor has been considerably improved since her treatments in New York and is now able to walk fairly well. --- Deputy Sheriff W.H. Beaird of LaFayette was in Roanoke last week. He said Roanoke had certainly improved wonderfully since he saw it two years ago. --- FOR SALE - - - My farm, consisting of 100 acres of land, 20 in bottom land, good residence and two tenant houses, 3 1/2 miles south of Wedowee on public road. Wilson and children are spending a few weeks with relatives near Glenn, Georgia. --- NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, August 28, 1907 WEHADKEE News (by S.D. Lewis, correspondent) We are sorry to note that our brother S.J. Lewis is quite sick with pneumonia. --- ROCK MILLS News Miss Mattie Whatley left Wednesday for her home in Greenville accompanied by her cousin Miss Ruby Yates. --- BACON LEVEL News C.H. Russell visited his father's family at Frolona, Georgia last week. --- Mr. Austin Bunch, one of our oldest citizens, is in very feeble health. --- A DEPLORABLE DEATH Our friend, Mr. E.M. Moore, bookkeeper for Wright, Williams & Wadley, received the shocking news Monday at noon that his brother had been killed by an electric car Saturday night in the city of Birmingham. One of the unfortunate features of the case was that it was impossible to notify him at once by wire on account of the telegrapher's strike, which affects the whole country. Consequently a man had to come all the way over here on a train to bring the news. Mr. Moore left on the afternoon train for Birmingham to accompany his brother's remains to the interment. The sympathies of many friends go out to him in his great grief. ---- BEVIS STRING BAND Many of our local readers will be glad of an opportunty of hearing the celebrated Bevis String Band of Franklin, that will appear in College Hall next Friday night, the 30th inst., in one of their charming entertainments, for the benefit of the Methodist Church. The Bevis's are talented musicians and never fail to delight the audiences wherever they go. There are four members in the company. Concert begins at 8 o'clock; admission 25 cents for children, 35 cents for adults. ---- SMITH DOLLS SELLING It is a matter of interest to note that the factory located in Roanoke and manufacturing the patent rag dolls of Mrs. S.S. Smith is turning out large quantities of these handsome and durable dolls, and they are finding a ready sale. Mr. Smith has just returned from a tour of South Alabama and North Florida and will leave in a few days on a trip to South Georgia. Everywhere he finds a good sale. Mrs. Smith is at the Jamestown Exposition where her handiwork is attracting much favorable attention, resulting in largely increased orders. ---- LOCAL News Mrs. L.N. Webster left Monday for her home in Richmond, Virginia. --- Mrs. A.G. Fretwell and daughter Carrie arrived yesterday to visit the family of J.H. Oldham. --- Miss Mattie Lou Cline of Atlanta and Bunyan Gresham and sister of Troup County are visiting their cousin Mrs. J.T. Striplin this week. --- Mr. and Mrs. Henderson Ray of Columbus are visiting J.W. Ray's family this week. --- M.W. Hardy of Camden, Arkansas spent Sunday and Monday with his relatives and many friends in Roanoke. He is prospering out West, being manager of an oil mill plant. --- Mr. and Mrs. Fred Park and daughter and Mrs. A.D. Taylor left yesterday for their home in Texas, after a lengthy visit to relatives in these parts. --- J.A. Pearson of Birmingham is visiting his father H.D. Pearson near town. --- DeWitt Floyd of Chipley, Georgia visited S.N. Sledge and other relatives here last week. --- E.C. Arnett has moved to LaGrange. He sold his residence on Lebanon street to Mrs. Elizabeth Sims who will move into it. --- FOR SALE - - - Fine farm containing 120 acres situated in Randolph county, one mile northeast of Wehadkee post office. 40 acres fresh upland, about 18 acres fine botton land; about 60 acres of original woods.
