No. 1 News G.W. Clack has been in poor health for some time and goes not seem to get any better. --- D.J. Hodge is on the sick list for some days now. --- John Landers has the fever. --- Several from this section attended the burial at Standing Rock yesterday of Mr. Fred Johnson and his daughter Mrs. J.H. Pullen. They were both killed by a train on the Atlanta & West Point road below West Point on Saturday. --- A SHOCKING ACCIDENT Last Saturday, in trying to cross the Western of Alabama railway tracks near West Point, Mr. Fred Johnson and his daughter Mrs. John H. Pullen, were struck by the engine and almost killed instantly. The horse was also killed. Mrs. Pullen lived at Standing Rock and was visiting her father's family in Lee county. She leaves a husband and one child. This good family are the recipients of much sympathy over this double tragedy. --- LOCAL News Mrs. J.W. Hart is visiting relatives here. --- W.E. Corley left Friday for Warm Springs to recuperate a few days. --- D.W. Zackery of Hogansville, Georgia visited his brother J.M. Zackery the first of the week. --- Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Elder Sr. of Clay county are visiting relatives in this vicinity. --- Miss Lucile Pulliam left Monday to visit LaFayette and Camp Hill before returning to her home in Hillsboro, Texas. --- J.W. Pearson left Sunday for Evergreen where he went to secure two children from the Baptist Orphanage to make their home with him. --- Mr. and Mrs. F.M. Parker of Sycamore, have been spending a few days with Mr. and Mrs. L.B. Johnson near town. Mrs. Parker and Mrs. Johnson are sisters. They had the pleasure of meeting here their sister Mrs. Mattie Hogge of Ellis County, Texas whom they had not seen for thirty-three years. --- A daughter was born at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J.S. Hunter this morning. --- Nat Collier of Meridian, Miss., has been spending some days with the family of his father J.Z. Collier. --- Mrs. Spinks and Miss Sue Amos have had as their guests the past few days their sisters, Mrs. Olin Ward of Oakbowery and Mrs. Non Ward of Dadeville and their brother Guy Amos of Gadsden. --- Mr. and Mrs. J.G. Burdett of Meriwether County, Georgia came last Wednesday and remained till Monday with the family of the former's brother, S.D. Burdett. The visiting brother was a Confederate soldier and is a cripple from a wound he received. ---- Mr. and Mrs. W.B. Vinson attended the funeral of the latter's brother Henry G. Cumbee in West Point on Sunday, who died rather suddenly in LaFayette. --- NOTICE - - I hereby forbid all persons from hiring, sheltering or feeding my son General Smith, a minor. Lloyd Smith, colored --- Luther Gauntt of Omaha, Texas arrived yesterday to spend a few weeks with relatives at his old home. --- Miss Maggie Bagley has come to make her home with her uncle, Rev. R.W. Anderson. --- NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, September 11, 1907 NAPOLEON News Mr. Lon Spears was happily wedded to Miss Annie McDaniel last Sunday. --- ROANOKE R.F.D. No. 1 News J.J. Swint moved to his father's today. He is in bad health. --- Omar Hamlin and Miss Rosa Richardson went over to Georgia yesterday and got married. --- TOM BECK KILLED At Nix's store 6 miles northwest of town this afternoon at about 6 o'clock, J.H. Nix shot Tom Beck. Beck died in a few minutes. It is said that Mr. Beck was using profane language in the store in the presence of Mr. Nix's wife and that on being asked to quit, trouble arose. Nix came here at once and gave himself up to the sheriff and his bond was set at $3000. which he made. Lizzie Baker --- CARD OF THANKS We thank the good people of Roanoke and our home community for their kindness to us during our recent bereavement in the death of our husband and father. Mrs. M.A. Clack and children --- DIED SUDDENLY Last Thursday morning, Mr. Geo. W. Clack was sitting at the door of Hill, Brumbeloe and Co., conversing with a freind when he suddenly succumbed without saying a word after being stricken. He had been suffering many months from attacks of heart trouble. Mr. Clack had only moved to Roanoke the day before his death. He had formerly lived in north Chambers County. He was about sixty years of age. He was known as one of the most accomodating neighbors to be found anywhere. The remains were interred on Friday after services at New Hope church of which the deceased was a member. --- SON OF FORMER RANDOLPH COUNTY CITIZEN FREED FROM MURDER CHARGE Anniston, Sept. 7th Ira Perryman who has been held on a murder charge was placed in the custody of his father O.H. Perryman today by Judge Thomas W. Coleman under the provision of a new juvenile law passed by the last legislature. This law went into effect today. The counsel for the defendant, who was only 13 years of age on last January, comes under this new law and this point was sustained by Judge Coleman. This decision means an acquittal, that is, the boy is given his freedom pending good behavior. Young Perrman shot down an old negro, Phillip Cook, without provocation, about a month ago. In the court room today no one was allowed except the lawyers in the case and the sheriff. The above will be of interest to many of our readers who remember Mr. O.H. Perryman as a citizen of Randolph county for many years. Mr. Perryman left Randolph some eight years ago. His son, Ira, was in Roanoke close about the time of the killing above referred to. ---- LOCAL News Miss Pearl Prescott of Wedowee is visiting her uncle T.M. Swann. --- Mrs. Mollie Burton of Mobile is visiting relatives in Roanoke and Wedowee. --- Mrs. H.J. Holliday is gradually improving after a long and dangerous illness. --- Mrs. J.D. Abernathy and two children spent last week with the former's sister, Mrs. J.F. Collins. --- Bowd Blake died Tuesday of last week at Blake's station on the A. & B. His death was unexpected. He was the son of Mr. Thomas Blake, a well known citizen, and leaves a family. --- H.G. Ruggles, Mrs. J.O. Simmons and Mrs. L.E. Harris returned last night from LaGrange where they attended the funeral of Mr. A.F. Simmons who died on Monday. The deceased has many friends in Roanoke. --- Mrs. Ambrose and daughter Mrs. P.G. Trent Sr. and children left yesterday to spend a month at their old home in Virginia. --- H.R. Oldson is recuperating from a severe illness. --- In the Lane's Chapel community a daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Charlton Lane on Thursday and to Mr. and Mrs. Bob Slagle. --- H.T. Morrison are very feeble. --- HAPPY LAND News Mrs. Geo. Brown is slowly recovering from an attack of bilious fever. --- Otis Brown remains in critical condition. He is a victim of what seems to be bone scrofula and it may yet be necessary to amputate one of his legs. --- BACON LEVEL News Mrs. S.J. Holder will leave shortly to rejoin her husband in Texas, he having decided to remain in that state. --- FOR SALE - - - My farm, containing 130 acres, located 2 1/2 miles east of Roanoke. Three horse farm in cultivation. Twenty-five or thirty acres in woods. Ten or twelve acres in branch bottoms. Contains good six room house and two tenant houses. W.T. Lane, Roanoke, Ala., Route 3 --- NEGRO WOMAN SHOT Saturday night in the negro house back of Carroll's stable, near the center of town, a negro woman was shot through the arm and in the body by a pistol in the hands of her husband, Billy Royston. Billy reportedly was tanked up on mean whiskey which is so plentiful hereabouts, went home and began to abuse his wife who threw a lighted lamp at him, whereupon the husband, a big strapping young fellow, shot the woman twice. Only chance prevented this from being a murder. As it is now, it may yet result in death, though at this writing, the woman is doing fairly well. Monday morning Royston was arraigned before Justice J.T.B. Awbrey and plead guilty. A bond of $1000. was required of him which he was unable to make and consequently went to jail in Wedowee. --- LOCAL News J.G. Aiken is the guest of his sister Mrs. F.D. Hodges this week. --- The preliminary trial of J. Hiram Nix for killing Tom Beck in north Randolph some weeks ago, was held in Wedowee on Monday before Judge Kaylor. A tremendous crowd attended. Mr. Nix's bond was fixed at $3000. which he made. --- Saturday at noon, Mrs. W.A. Handley was taken suddenly and dangerously ill at the home of her son. She was carried home and during the ensuing twenty-four hours suffered a number of violent convulsions. Her life was almost despaired of. Mrs. Handley is not doing well and a trained nurse has come. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, September 25, 1907 ROCK MILLS News Mrs. J.K. Bennett is very ill with typhoid fever. --- Mrs. Ben Anderson of near West Point spent last week with her daughter Mrs. J.S. Yates. --- NEW TOWN At Blake's Station on the A B & A Railway, nine miles west of Roanoke, Ala., one half mile side tracks already built. Depot will be permanently located here. Big brick yeard established. Notice is hereby given to the public that I will give to any worthy person a business lot for stores, dwelling house lots, church lot or lots for new churches, also lots for schools, all free of charge. Come quick. Thomas Blake --- LOCAL News Tonight at 8:30 o'clock at the home of Mr. and Mrs. A.M. Awbrey, occurs the marriage of their daughter Miss Claude to T.C. Bingham. --- T.E. Curray, who lives near Quanah, Texas, and his little daughter Hortense, spent the latter part of last week with the family of his father-in-law, Mr. H.L. Griffin. --- A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Sam H. Tatum a week ago. --- Miss Addie Parker of West Point is visiting her aunt, Mrs. E.E. Rodgers. --- Mr. and Mrs. J.P. Williams moved back here from Montgomery. They are in the house in back of Dr. Lane's. Mr. Williams will work for Hill, Brumbeloe and Co. --- Mr. and Mrs. Z.J. Wright left yesterday morning for New York where Mrs. Wright goes to be operated on. Mr. Wright will also be treated while there. Dr. Disharoon will accompany them. Their friends trust that the trip may be a most successful one. --- Mrs. T.B. Turner and children returned to Alex City on Monday after a visit to Mrs. F.A. Neal. --- Mrs. Mamie Woodfin of Meridian, Miss., is visiting her niece Mrs. S.G.
