Teal Gravelle tealtree@comcast.net October 1, 2005, 8:46 am The Roanoke Leader October 1908 NEWSPAPER ABSTRACTS FROM "THE ROANOKE LEADER", Roanoke, Randolph County, Alabama for OCTOBER 1908 NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, October 7, 1908 TOM JOHNSON SHOT BY J.L.B. TAYLOR IN A QUARREL OVER BUSINESS MATTERS; JOHNSON SERIOUSLY HURT Last Thursday, a serious affray occurred on the place of Mr. J.L.B. Taylor, two miles north of town, in which Mr. Tom Johnson, a young man living on Taylor's place, was seriously wounded. The general facts, as we have been able to learn them, are as follows: Johnson works on Taylor's place and some trouble came up between them over the division of some cotton. Taylor went to Johnson's on Thursday, taking his shot gun withhim and found Johnson in the act of unloading a wagon load of cotton. Some words followed and the former shot the latter at rather close range. The gun was loaded with small shot which tore through the left arm and entered the side, piercing the left lung. The condition of the wounded man is pronounced as dangerous. It is thought that his arm may have to be amputated. The tragedy was witnessed by members of Johnson's household. We learn that Mr. Taylor claims that Mr. Johnson attempted to strike him with the steel- yards and that he fired in self defense. Shortly after the shooting Mr. Taylor drove to town and asked that a warrant be sworn out for his own arrest. Consequently a warrent was issued by Justice Awbrey charing Taylor with assault with intent to murder. A bond of $500. was set to hold him till the preliminary trial, which was promptly made. ---- LOCAL News Mrs. Lee Ward is visiting her sister Mrs. A.J. Langley. --- J.T.
