Stevens. Surely such kindness was never excelled. Mrs. Etta Stevens --- H.C. MAYFIELD KILLED BY SEBE HENDRICKS OF GEORGIA IN ROCK MILLS SATURDAY NIGHT In the early part of last Saturday night a tragedy occurred in the public road near the old cemetery, in the edge of Rock Mills which cost the life of H.C. Mayfield whose home was at Wehadkee in this county. His slayer was Sebe Hendricks who lives over the line in Georgia. The facts, as we gather them are as follows: Mayfield and Hendricks had been to Standing Rock to sell cotton. It seems that on this trip they obtained some whiskey and were in an intoxicated condition upon their return. Up to this time the men had been friends but in their unbalanced state of mind, when intoxicated, became quarrelsome with the result as stated. Another white man and two negroes were along. It is alleged that Mayfield was making a demonstration with his knife when Hendricks shot him through the body. Mr. Mayfield was carried to the home of Tom Harper in Rock Mills where surgeons made a heroic effort to save his life. However the wounded man expired at 11 o'clock Monday night. It is said that before his death the unfortunate man asked the Hendricks not be prosecuted and so far as we have learned, the slayer has not been arrested. Mr. Mayfield, who leaves a family of his own, was connected with some of the best people in the county. ---- LOCAL News Eudora Sharman returned last night from a trip to Texas accompanied by the little son of his brother J.W. As we learn the facts there was a great deal of drinking and disorder. In the afternoon trouble arose at the show grounds and the marshall, J. Ben Clegg was called upon to arrest a young white man named Bud Stephens who lived near Milltown. Later is seems that Stephens and two brothers started through town in vehicles. Another meeting occurred and we are informed that the Stephens boys set upon Mr. Clegg with knives seriously wounding him. The officer began firing and Bud Stephens fell dead. His brother Morgan Stephens was wounded. Afterward the father of the young men, Harry Stephens and others appeared on the scene and disorder reigned supreme for a while. This is another evidence of what the sale and use of whiskey will do. --- WEDOWEE News Mr. Samuel B.
