Rev. A.B. Vaughn, pastor of the First Baptist church of LaGrange, of which the deceased was a member, conducted the services, assisted by Rev. George Stoves of this city. The discourse of Dr. Vaughn was most beautiful and impressive. The music by Mrs. Carlisle and a select choir was very sweet. The beautiful white casket was covered with handsome floral offerings while others rested upon the rostrum. During the service most everyone in the congregation was visibly affected. While the home of the deceased was in Heard County, Georgia, she had relatives and many friends in Roanoke where she had frequently visited and it was very fitting that her final resting place should be in Roanoke. Her last visit to this place was on Thanksgiving Day. She proceeded to Atlanta on a shopping expedition and was suddenly taken violently ill. Her parents hurried to her bedside and all possible was done to save her life, but she breathed her last on Wednesday night. Miss Ridley is the only child of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. D. Ridley. Her life was happy and was the sunshine of her home until disease began to cast its shadows over her pathway. But she met her troubles with a gentle fortitude that challenged admiration. She was greatly admired by a large circle of relatives and acquaintances. This was evidenced by the large outpouring of people at her funeral. Delegations were present from LaGrange, Carrollton, Franklin, Heflin, Lineville, Wedowee and other points. ---- LOCAL News Miss Mary Will Swint returned yesterday to her home at Chipley, Georgia after a visit to her cousin, Mrs. J.J. Swann, there came to her bier an old time negro man from his home in Georgia, near the home of the deceased. He was Harmon Ridley, who had belonged to Mr. Ridley's father in antebellum days and had remained with the family ever since. When Mr. Ridley was apprised of the presence of the old faithful servant, he came out and escorted him into the parlor and presented him to those who watched over the dead. Then standing arm in arm, the heart broken father and the former slave wept together over the lifeless object of their love. When the services were held at the church the old negro again appeared, entering the gallery of the Sunday school room. Mr.Nichols, the director of the funeral, very thoughtfully went up and carried the old man a chair. There he sat, an eager listener to every word of the sermon and of song. Nor did he desert his charge until the body of the fair sleeper was lowered to its final rest. The tie that binds the Southern white people and the old time darkies is a very tender one, and the incident above related affords a beautiful exhibition of it. ---- NOTICE OF APPLICATION FOR PARDON OR PAROLE Application will be made to the Board of Pardons in Montgomery, Ala., on Dec. 15th, 1908 for a pardon or parole of A.J.
