Teal Gravelle tealtree@comcast.net October 3, 2005, 8:13 pm The Roanoke Leader January 1909 NEWSPAPER ABSTRACTS FROM "THE ROANOKE LEADER", Roanoke, Randolph County, Alabama for JANUARY 1909 NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, January 6, 1909 CARD OF THANKS We wish to express our sincerest thanks to all who showed us kindness during the fatal illness of our mother Mrs.Mary Langley. Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Langley Mr. and Mrs. W.W. Langley Mrs. Jerry Tison Mrs. T.H. Thompson ---- NAPOLEON News The numerous families of the children of "Grandma" Sarah Ann Bailey who resides in this vicinity, assembled last Sunday at her home with her boy Ed, to memoralize her eighty-sixth birthday. "Grandma" Bailey was born Dec. 20, 1822 during the second term of the administration of President James Monroe. The year following her birth was one in which this President's name would become famous, originiating from a message to congress giving notice to the world that no European power would be permitted to acquire territory and colonize any portion of the American contintent, and neither should any European state interfere with the internal affairs of any American government. Such as been the policy of the United States government ever since and it is called the "Monroe Doctrine" and jealously guarded still. "Grandma" Bailey is an intelligent lady and keeps well posted on current events and seems to have taken a lively interest in the political issues of the day from her youth up to the present time. She is now an inveterate Populist and she will surprize anyone to hear her marvelous defense of those principals. She is at her best when descanting on the stirring times of Jackson, Clay, Webster and Calhoun. She has nine children, seven sons and two daughters, thirty-nine grandchildren and twenty-one great grandchildren, totaling sixty-nine souls in all. On this occasion she was unusually sprightly, and entered heartily into the festivities so lavish on every hand. I doubt if any old pioneer veteran anywhere can be found who sways more absolute power as counselor over her numerous family than is possessed by "Grandma" Bailey. Grandma Bailey is now the oldest person in our vicinity, and is revered and honored by all who know her. --- Joe D.
