Teal Gravelle tealtree@comcast.net October 7, 2005, 3:46 pm The Roanoke Leader July 1909 NEWSPAPER ABSTRACTS FROM "THE ROANOKE LEADER", Roanoke, Randolph County, Alabama for JULY 1909 NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, July 7, 1909 ARRESTS FOLLOW SUDDUTH KILLING; RUFUS HALL CONFESSES THAT HE SHOT HIS STEPFATHER The mystery that surrounded the killing of Mr. Dock Sudduth at his home near Lebanon church on June 26th, an account of which appeared in the Leader last week, is clearing up. The circumstances tended so clearly to show foul play that relatives of the deceased made further investigation into the affair and swore out warrants for the arrest of the dead man's widow and his three stepsons, Rufus, Amos and Carl Hall. The warrant against Rufus, the oldest Hall boy, was issued first, and he was arrested last Wednesday by the deputy sheriff and locked up in the jail at Wedowee. Saturday, Amos and Carl Hall were arrested and locked up in Roanoke till Sunday afternoon when they were carried to the county jail by Deputy Windom. Mrs. Sudduth was sick in bed and was not placed under arrest. On Sunday, the young man first arrested made a confession to Sheriff Walden stating that he shot and killed his stepfather. In his preliminary trial Monday before Judge Kaylor he again made this confession and swore that the other members of the family had nothing to do with it. He told his story, going into details, without the slighest emotion, either of fear or regret. He stated however that he killed Mr. Sudduth in self defense and afterward placed the pistol under the latter's body. Judge Kaylor remanded Rufus Hall to jail without bail. Amos was released as it was shown that he was not at home at the time. Carl was placed under a fifty dollar bond for his appearance at the August term of court as a material witness. Rufus Hall is but little more than 21 years of age and is married. He has not been staying at the Sudduth home much of late. Amos is 18 years of age and Carl is 15. It is understood that relations had not been agreeable for some time between the deceased and his wife and stepsons. The tragedy is a shocking affair and it is well that it is to be thoroughly threshed out. ---- LOCAL News Miss Annie Mae Pogue died Sunday a few miles north of town after a long illness. Rev. S.L.
