Jasper Breed of Mississippi is the guest of his sisters Mrs. Yates and Mrs. Enloe this week. --- Mr. J.E. Bishop continues quite ill. --- LOCAL News Ralph Saliba and his sister Mrs. George returned Saturday from a visit to relatives in Savannah. --- G.W. Heard has as his guests his mother Mrs. G.W. Heard Sr. and his sister Mrs. O.D. Wolfe of West Point. --- Mrs. R.M. Pulliam of Hillsboro, Texas, sister of J.P. Seroyer, arrived yesterday to visit for a few days. --- Mr. and Mrs. Lovick Wright and children and Mrs. Hardy of Troup County, Georgia spent last week with Mr. and Mrs. J.S. Hunter and other relatives in this vicinity. --- ROCK MILLS News J.D. Knight is very ill with typhoid fever. --- Mrs. Winnie Cox of Atlanta visited her sister Mrs. T.T. Harper last week. --- Mrs. Martha Hendon of LaGrange is spending the week with her sister Mrs. Will Yates. --- BACON LEVEL News Mr. Claudius Ussery of Pratt City is spending his vacation at his father's, Mr. M.J. Ussery. --- WEHADKEE News July 26th The little babe in the home of W.L. Gay, died last week. --- Luther Whatley who has been spending several months in Texas, came back to his old home near this place. --- A twelve pound boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. J.R. Green last Friday. --- Several days ago Jack Burson and Will Davis were out hunting and stopped at a peach tree to get some fruit. Mr. Burson dropped his gun which discharged, the load entering the right leg of Mr. Davis, inflicting a serious wound. At this writing he is doing nicely. --- BROUGHTON Community News Old "Grandma" Brown is still very low. She has been seriously ill for several weeks. --- LOCAL News Mrs. F.M. Brummit with her children and invalid husband, have taken a house on Main street near the corporate limits of the town. Mrs. Brummit is well remembered here as Miss Montana Liles. The Lineville Headlight --- Grover Pittman died yesterday in Albertville. He was a nephew of Messrs. G.E. Lee, W.W. and J.M. Pittman of this place. Mr. Wayne Pittman left for Albertville yesterday morning, a few hours before the young man died. --- NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, August 11, 1909 LOCAL News Miss Beulah Lane of Pinson, near Birmingham, is the guest of her cousin Miss Bernice Zachry. -- John E. Barker was here yesterday to meet his mother Mrs. Elizabeth Barker of Covington, Georgia who was enroute to Blake's to spend the remainder of the summer. --- Mrs. Sidney G. Vaughan and little daughter arrived Friday from Wylam to spend some weeks with the former's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Pittman. --- W.H. Beeland is spending some time with his little motherless daughter in the home of J.D. Weathers. --- J.D. Knight, son of Jeff Knight, died in Rock Mills on Sunday. --- BACON LEVEL News Mr. Dan McCarter of Texas is visiting relatives in this community. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, August 18, 1909 LOCAL News We regret to note the serious misfortune sustained Monday afternoon by Mrs. N. George in being kicked in the face by a horse. Several teeth were broken and her face and forehead cut badly. The damage was done by a family horse while in a playful mood. --- Mrs. J.M. Embrey and children had a narrow escape Sunday afternoon behind a runaway horse. Mrs. Embrey was considerably shocked and bruised by being thrown from the buggy. --- Mrs. Emma Stewart of Erick, Oklahoma is on a visit to relatives in this section. This good lady is a former resident of Roanoke and is cordially greeted by her many friends here. --- A son was born one week ago to Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Holliday. --- Miss Mary Molton returned to Birmingham on Monday after a pleasant visit to her aunt, Mrs. Sanders. --- We regret to note that Mr. John Fausett has been exceedingly ill since Saturday but his condition is somewhat improved at this writing. --- Miss Ruby Ayers of Gabbettville, Ga., is the guest of her sister Mrs. J.T. Gauntt. --- Miss Hassie Pike of Rock Mills is visting her sister Mrs. T.R. Burgess. --- CORBIN News Dock Newman of near Villa Rica, Georgia is visiting in this section and looking for a home. --- Mrs. G.A. Gross Sr. is in bad health. --- BROUGHTON News We are sorry to note the very serious condition of our esteemed friend, W.Z. Hodges. He is at his father's home at Level Road and is almost at the point of death with typhoid fever. He had his young wife have the sympathy and prayers of their many friends. --- LOCAL News Miss Bessie Clarey, formerly of Roanoke, was married in Columbus on Sunday to a Mr. Bell. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, August 25, 1909 BRAVE ED BRYAN JUMPS FOR LIFE FROM THIRD STORY OF BURNING HOTEL When the news spread over Roanoke last Friday that the Royal Hotel in Opelika had burned at 2 o'clock that morning, and that Captain Ed Bryan had been forced by the flames to jump from the third story for his life, a thrill of mingled sympathy and horror vibrated through many hearts. Few men have more friends in Roanoke than Mr. Bryan, the brave, big-hearted, accomodating conductor on the East Alabama branch of the Central of Georgia Railway. Being off on a few days vacation, he thus chanced to be spending the night in the ill fated hotel. The Leader is delighted to state that Mr. Bryan was not so seriously injured by his frightful plunge as was at first feared, and while severely shocked and bruised by the fall, and almost overcome with smoke and flames, he is now convalescing nicely. --- LOCAL News Mrs. O.K. Waits of Lineville is visiting her sister Mrs. A.G. Randle. --- Mr. and Mrs. W.E. Randle of Bay View, Florida are visiting their brother A.G. Randle. --- A.C. Hunter and family of Troup county are spending the week with J.S. Hunter and other relatives in this vicinity. --- W.J. Fuller with his daughter Miss Hazel and son Guy of Dadeville returned home Sunday after a visit to the family of Carl Fuller. --- W.C. Lane has moved into the home he recently purchased from the Hardy estate. --- W.L. Wilson continues to be quite sick. --- LOWELL News Mrs. Sam Enloe is reported sick. --- Sam Hornsby and family are visiting in our town. --- Mrs. L.J.
