Hurt and family left yesterday for Denver, Colorado where they will make their home for some time. We regret to note the leaving of this good family. --- CIRCUIT COURT CASES Among the cases of public interest heard recently in Circuit Court: Charlie Carter and Jack Moncus charged with murder; case against former nol prossed; latter acquitted. J.B. Clegg, charged with murder; acquitted. J.H. Nix, charged with murder; sentenced to one year and one day. Dock Hall, charged with murder; life sentence. Rufus Hall, charged with murder; life sentence. Henry McDowell, charged with selling liquor without license; sentence of 18 months. ---- LOCAL News Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Kitchens are moving this week to Ashland where Mr. Kitchen will buy cotton. --- Mrs. Eugene Boykin of Nashville is visiting her uncles, M.W. and J.A. Carlisle. --- A.L. Weaver returned last week from a visit to his parents in Texas. Yesterday he left with Dr. Disharoon to visit his wife who is with her mother at Waverly Hall, Georgia. We regret to note that Mrs. Weaver continues seriously ill. --- NAPOLEON News Mrs. Sallie Spears, relect of the late F.M. Spears, was wedded Wednesday evening to Mr. Bolling of Winston County. She had been making her home with John Wood at Potash. --- BACON LEVEL News Mr. M.V. Hudson Sr., an aged citizen, is in a serious condition and not expected to live. --- MR. M.V. HUDSON DEAD Mr. M.V. Hudson Sr. died at 11 o'clock Monday and was buried Thursday afternoon at Bacon Level. The services were conducted by the Masons after a sermon by Rev. W.J. Layton. A large crowd attended. Mr. Hudson was 73 years of age and was one of our best citizens. He was a member of the Baptist church at Bacon Level and was a Confederate Veteran. --- LOCAL News Sam McDaniel and Miss Lucy Richardson of Lowell went to Franklin on Sunday and were married. --- While blasting rock at Rock Mills last Friday, Ernest Hollis a by- stander, was struck on the head. It is thought he cannot recover. --- NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, September 8, 1909 LOCAL News R.M. Ward is reported ill with the fever. --- W.F. Abernathy of Buffalo spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Sam Abernathy. --- O.W. Bradley passed through Roanoke last Saturday, returning to Anniston from LaGrange where he buried his wife. They formerly lived in Roanoke. --- FOR SALE - - - 130 acres of land, 2 1/2 miles east of Roanoke with good house. Three-horse farm in cultivation. W.T. Lane, Roanoke, Ala. --- We are pleased to note that W.L. Wilson is recovering from the fever. --- S. H. Tatum was called to Milltown last Thursday by the serious illness of his mother who is now convalescing. --- BACON LEVEL News The fifteen year old son of John Nelson of Hickory Flat was buried here this week. --- Mrs. M.W. Lane spent Thursday near Standing Rock, the guest of her father Henry Strickland. --- LOCAL News The aged mother of Rev. C.M. Dollar died last Saturday. --- Mrs. H.B. Reid and children are preparing to move to Danville, Kentucky where Mr. Reid is at work. --- NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, September 15, 1909 WELL KNOWN CITIZEN OF ROCK MILLS PASSED AWAY LAST SATURDAY MORNING Mr. D.E. Cato, for many years a resident of this county, died at an early hour last Saturday morning at his home in Rock Mills. He had been ill for months. The deceased was a highly respected citizen and was 79 years of age. The remains were brought to Roanoke on Sunday where they rested at the home of the deceased's daughter, Mrs. H.G. Ruggles, till Monday morning, when they were conveyed by train to Hogansville for interment. Mr. Cato leaves a widow and also several grown children by his first marriage. To these The Leader offers sincere sympathy in their sad loss. --- LOCAL News J.M. Embrey is threatened with the fever. --- Mrs. G.A. Austin of Atlanta is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Cassells. --- Mrs. Albert Brittain arrived last night from Jacksonville to spend two weeks with relatives here. --- Mr. and Mrs. R.T. West accompanied the relatives of Mr. D.E. Cato to the latter's funeral in Hogansville on Monday. --- Cephas Kitchens has accepted a position with Norton's pharmacy in Birmingham. --- Mrs. C.W. Seale and little daughter left yesterday for Danville in Morgan county, being called there by the illness of the former's mother. --- Mrs. S.J. Barfield is seriously ill. --- Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin East will arrive from Phenix City tomorrow to spend a few weeks with relatives in this area. --- BACON LEVEL News Mrs. Julius Strickland of Columbus visited relatives here last week. --- ROCK MILLS News Mr. Ebb Cato died Sunday morning after a long illness. His remains were carried to Hogansville for burial. --- Mrs. Emma Stewart of Oklahoma is visiting her sister Mrs. Hill. --- CORBIN News It is not expected that B.D. Carpenter will live but a short while. He will very likely pass off the stage of action before this reaches the press. He is a good citizen, a good neighbor and a good, faithful church member. --- W.T. Fields and wife have about recovered after a long spell of the fever. --- DICKERT News J.R. Melton is recovering after a severe attack of pleurisy. --- MRS. W.H. WRIGHT DEAD Mrs. W.H. Wright, who formerly lived in this town and county, being the wife of Rev. W.H. Wright, died yesterday in Lanett, after five weeks' illness. The remains were brought here last evening and will be interred in the Roanoke cemetery, after funeral services at the home of Claud Embrey this morning. Many friends will read this notice with regret. --- LOCAL News The youngest child of Mr. and Mrs. E.M. Moore died at 1 o'clock last night after a long, trying illness. The interment will be in the local cemetery after services at the home at 4 o'clock. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, September 22, 1909 MRS. A.J. STEWART DIES IN ATLANTA; SUDDEN DEATH OF FORMER ROANOKE LADY BRINGS SORROW TO MANY; WAS BURIED YESTERDAY IN ATLANTA Shortly after noon Monday, Mr. W.H. Stewart received the tragic news by wire that his son's wife, Mrs. Alonzo J. Stewart had died suddenly at their home in Atlanta. The last news from them only a few days before, they were well and happy; hence, the sad news was a shock to the large family connection and to their numerous friends. The deceased was a daughter of Dr. William Weathers and was born and reared in this county. She had long been a consistent member of the Baptist church. Besides her heart broken husband and little daughter, she leaves a father, brothers and sisters and many other relatives. Tuesday morning, Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Stewart, Dr. and Mrs. Wm. Weathers, Mrs. Ussery and Mrs. Seroyer went to Atlanta to attend the funeral and burial which occurred in that city yesterday. We extend our sincere sympathy. ---- LOCAL News Our Wedowee correspondent writes that Mr. Maley Moore died Friday and that Mr. Bartow Carpenter's life is despaired of. --- Many readers of The Leader will be interested in the approaching marriage of Miss Edna Alsobrook to Mr. Jesse M. Jones. Two o'clock Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 6th is the date given in the invitation and the place is the lovely country home of the bride elect's parents, Mr. and Mrs. John N. Alsobrook near Five Points. ---- Mrs. D.F. Gibson arrived Saturday from Lineville to visit her mother Mrs. John Arnett. --- Jesse Waller arrived Saturday from Oklahoma, called by the serious illness of his sister Miss Gertrude. She is reported better at this writing. --- B.E. Satterwhite left Saturday for Baltimore where he will be under treatment at John Hopkins clinic for some time. His host of friends hope that he may derive great benefit from the treatment. --- Mr. R.J. Higgins will leave Saturday to spend the winter at Wewahitchka, Florida. His many friends regret his leaving. --- Mr. and Mrs. J.M. McBurnett and their mother are on a visit to Texas. --- NAPOLEON News Mr. Homer Beverly and Miss Carrie Kirby hied over the Georgia line last Sunday and got married. --- Mrs. Langley is still dangerously ill with little improvement. --- Mr. W.H. Shelnutt of Carrollton, Georgia, but formerly of this county, was buried at Haywood on Thursday. He left a wife and seven children to mourn their awful loss. His wife, formerly Miss Docia Barton, is an intelligent business woman. His family has numerous relations and many friends here who sincerely extend their sympathy to the bereaved family. --- BACON LEVEL News Ansell Strickland of Standing Rock spent a few days with his sister Mrs. M.W. Lane. --- Mrs. W.A. Seegar has been on the sick list but is some better. --- Mrs. N.W. Phillips entertained at an all day quilting and a sumptous dinner on Wednesday. --- WEHADKEE News Mrs. L.E. Lewis has been quite sick the past week. --- LOCAL News Geo. E. Lee has returned to Albertville where he is spending a large part of his time looking after the estate of his widowed sister. --- With regret we read in the LaGrange Reporter of the death of Mr. J.R. Hime which occurred in the Georgia city the 11th inst., from a stroke of apoplexy. Mr. Hime was superintendant of construction for the A B & A Railroad and resided in Roanoke several months. --- FARM FOR SALE - - - Located one mile west of Mason, Georgia, containing 160 acres; 40 acres in cultivation. Seegar, Wehadkee, Ala. --- NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, September 29, 1909 LOCAL News Hubert Mashburn and Miss Florrie Weathers were married at Midway on Sunday. --- Robert Ussery and Miss Susie Henry of Bacon Level were married at Evansville recently. --- Mrs. D.J. Burdett died at Bacon Level. --- Mrs. E.S. Burns is very ill at Corbin. --- Mr. A.R. Noel went over to Pleasant Hill on Sunday to visit his mother whose health, we regret to note, is very unsatisfactory. --- W.H. Stewart returned Friday from Atlanta where he had the sad mission of attending the funeral of his son's wife on Wednesday. Mrs. Stewart will remain over for some time to care for the two children of the deceased mother, the youngest being only five months of age. --- H.J. Holliday's wife is in feeble health. --- A.H. Stevens and family arrived from Oklahoma last week to again make this their home. --- Mrs. Josie Dean and daughter left yesterday for Mobile to make their home after spending a few days with Mrs. J.M.
