Paul Bass was married to Miss Annie Maude Askew at the latter's home in Columbus. Monday, Mr. and Mrs. Bass came to Roanoke to spend a few days with the former's relatives. The groom is now in the employ of the Columbus fire department. He is being congratulated upon his good fortune. --- LOCAL News Miss Alice Lott of Columbus has come to spend time with her sister Mrs. Miles. --- MUCH DAMAGE DONE The rains and floods of last week did much damage in Randolph County. We learn that the following mills were washed away: Murphy's, Mack Payne's, Frank Bell's, Newt Lipham's, Tom Lovvorn's saw mill and water house and the old Merrill mill in Heard County. Also part of Jim Wright's dam, the bride above Lamar at Harris Ford, while old Tom Owens' mill was partially damaged. There has been considerable damage also to crops and property in the county. --- The preliminary trial of Sheriff J.M. Walton and his son Homer Walton, for the killing of Lump Harmon at West Point, which occurred a week ago last Friday, was held at West Point on Monday before Justices Hardy and Utting, of Troup County. Both sides called many witnesses and the case was ably argued by the attorneys. After hearing all the evidence the Justices held that the killing was justifiable and discharged the defendants. LaFayette Sun --- Mrs. J.W. Radney is ill with the fever. A professional nurse has been sent for. --- Frank Ray and family of Phenix City arrived last Friday to visit relatives in Randolph and Clay counties. --- W.A. Wilf returned Friday from a visit to his father and family in Van Zant county, Texas. --- Mrs. W.H. Stewart is quite ill. --- W.E. Mitchell is quite ill. --- John T. Harris, an uncle of J.P. Harris of Abanda, died in Opelika on Monday morning. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, July 13, 1910 MR. BRANNAN LOSES BROTHER A.C. Brannan has returned from Troy, where he attended the funeral of his brother, W.H. Brannan, who died in Elba in the early part of last week, before Mr. Brannan could reach him. This is the first death in a family of nine children. The Leader joins the many friends of our popular townsman in expressions of sympathy in this sad experience. --- ANOTHER NEGRO KILLED It comes our turn to chronicle another homocide that occurred near town last Sunday afternoon. One negro was the victim of another's gun in a general fusillade participated in by both sides. The killing occurred at a gathering for religious worship at a point two miles southeast of Roanoke. We are informed that two Holley brothers became involved in a fight with Jim Huguley, the latter's hat being pierced by several balls. He, in turn, shot Charlie Holley four times killing him instantly. A stray ball struck another Huguley negro wounding him only slightly. Huguley came to town and give himself up. Yesterday afternoon he had his preliminary trial before Justice Awbrey and was released, all the witnesses who appeared testifying in his behalf. --- LOCAL News On last Tuesday, ten negroes charged with the murder of Sanders Huguley, were arraigned before Justice M.H. Radney. They went into trial at ten o'clock. The defendants pleaded not guilty but when the testimony so strongly ponted to the guilt of one of the defendants, he, Wade Finley, offered a plea of self defense. Finlay was placed under a $5000. bond but was unable to make it, and was at once sent to Wedowee and placed in jail. The other negroes were discharged. ---- Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Hardy of Troup county are spending the week with the family of the latter's brother, J.S. Hunter. --- Mr. Esserman and family of Rome, Ga., are the guests of the family of Louis Goldman. --- Mrs. E.P. Mickle is convalescent after a very severe illness. --- Mrs. R.P. Burton and her mother Mrs. Moorman returned to LaFayette on Sunday after a visit to Mrs. J.T. Woodall. --- Bryant Cofield arrived Monday from Humble, Texas to spend some weeks with his parents Mr. and Mrs. W.W. Cofield. --- Mrs S.H. Carlisle arrived in Roanoke Monday from Louisville, Kentucky and is in feeble health. She was accompanied to Altanta by her daughter Mrs. Young and from Altanta by her son Holstun. --- Will Waller and wife of Texas are visiting the family of their father J.B. Waller, near town. --- J.E. Pittman and family are expected to arrive this week from Monessen, Pa., upon a visit to relatives. --- Mrs. A.C. Brannen is expecting the following family to arrive today, her brother S.A. Daniels of Americus, Ga., and her sister Mrs. E.E. Williams of Newberry, S.C. --- CORBIN News Mrs. Ann Huey's condition continues to be critical. --- Larkin Dewberry is on the sick list. --- BACON LEVEL News M.J. Ussery and son Claudius have the fever but are reported to be improving. --- Mrs. Nancy E. Meacham has returned to her home near Lime after spending some time with relatives here. --- ROCK MILLS News Emmett Keeble has typhoid fever and his little girl has also been sick for some days. --- "Uncle" Dick Bennett has been very low with dropsy for quite a while. --- NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, July 20, 1910 GEO. W. NEWMAN DIED FRIDAY AT HIS HOME AT ROCK SPRINGS, CHAMBERS COUNTY A long distance phone message yesterday evening reported the death of Hon. George W. Newman, a highly respected citizen of Chambers County, at his home at Rock Springs, 5 miles from LaFayette at 10 o'clock a.m. Mr. Newman was about 70 years old and had the respect and confidence of all who knew him. He had represented his county in the legislature with high credit. He is survived by his wife, also by three sons, Dr. Harris Newman of Dadeville, and Willie and Mike of LaFayette. The Opelika Daily News --- J.S. LOVVORN DEAD Monday morning, Mr. C.G. Lovvorn received a telegram announcing the death of his brother, Mr. J.S. Lovvorn, which occurred in Albertville on Sunday afternoon. The remains were brought to Roanoke Monday evening and the following day were carried to Zion, near Lamar, for interment. The deceased formerly lived in this county and the news of the fatal termination of his long illness will bring sorrow to many friends. --- MRS. MARTHA LANE DEAD The Leader records with sincere regret the death of Mrs. Martha Lane, which occurred at her home two miles from town at 1 o'clock yesterday afternoon. The deceased was about 77 years of age and had been in declining health for some time. She was a life-long member of the Methodist church and was one of the best of women. She leves the following children, all of whom are excellent citizens: Messrs. W.T., C.H., W.C., J.T., and R.L. Lane and Mesdames Lou Casey, Fannie Robertson and D.R. Ozley. The funeral will occur at 2 o'clock this afternoon. ---- LOCAL News Marion Hutchins and sister Mrs. Sallie Bell, who were residents of this county many years ago but now residing in Mississippi, are on a visit to old friends in this section. They are accompanied by Mrs. Bell's daughter, an attractive young lady. --- BACON LEVEL News Lewis Strickland of Mt. Calm, Texas, visited his sister Mrs. M.W. Lane this week. --- "Uncle" John Phillips and little misses Laura and Lela Phillips are visiting Mrs. James Talley near Texas, Georgia. --- Joe Ussery is up after a spell of the fever. His little daughter Ethel is now ill with the fever. --- NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, July 27, 1910 CORBIN News Mrs. J.B. Chaffin and her daughter Miss Ruth of Texas, are visiting relatives and friends in this section. --- Mrs. Ann Huey died the 10th inst., and was buried at Liberty Grove on the 11th inst. The funeral was conducted by Rev. Joe Hester. --- LOCAL News Mrs. J.K. Bennett of LaGrange is the guest of her sister Mrs. Ware Awbrey. --- Mrs. W.A. White left Saturday for a week's visit to her son John White in Columbus. --- Mr. Scarbrough,a good citizen of Albertville, accompanied the family of the late J.S. Lovvorn to Roanoke with the latter's remains last week. The family stayed over to visit relatives at Lamar and Roanoke for several days before returning to their home in Albertville. --- The Leader is in receipt of a notice to change the address on our mailing list of Mrs. C.B. Webster of Richmond to Mrs. A.E. Moody of Norfolk, Virginia. The subscriber was formerly Miss Carrie Ray of this city. She added that the was married on the 16th inst. --- Mrs. W.C. Bailey of Memphis arrived last Friday to spend some time with the family of her father Mr. F.M. Adams. --- Mrs. Alex Stevens boared the train here Monday morning for Union Springs to visit her daughter Mrs. Jeff Smith. --- A young negro over the Georgia line shot and killed his brother last Friday night. They were sons of Josh Swint. --- Mrs. Nettie Frost and children are visiting the former's parents, Mr. and Mrs. C.G. Lovvorn. --- Mrs. H.R. Sanderlin and child of Norfolk, Va., is visiting her sister Mrs. W.N.
