Handley yesterday had workmen tear down the old dwelling house that has so long stood on the street running back of the Handley House block and located between the Presbyterian church and the warehouse. Its taking away is entitled to more than passing notice for it was one of the town's oldest landmarks. It was at least 55 years old. When Roanoke was a village it ranked among the best residences in town and was occupied by several prominent families in turn. Captain B.F. Weathers and bride moved into it shortly after their marriage. At one time the parnets of the late Mr. J.A. Hardy made it their home and both died there. Mr. and Mrs. I.G. Hill once resided there and later Mr. and Mrs. C.D. Manley. But in late years the old house has fallen into decay. For some years it was used by negroes and two or three years ago a negro woman livng there was shot and killed under that roof by a negro man who made his escape. Ordinarly we like a town builder, but in this case we commend Mr. Handley in his work of tearing down as the object of his attack had become an unsightly and unsanitary shack. --- LOCAL News Mrs. W.J.
