Lyon. --- Mr. and Mrs. L.M. Sherman of Buffalo, Rt. 1, were called to Roanoke on Sunday by the death of the latter's brother Gordon Phelps. --- Mrs. Seaborn Mulkey died at her home near town and was buried at Lane's Chapel on Saturday. Rev. S.L. Dobbs conducted the services. --- A.T. Cranford went to West Point on Friday to visit his brother M.H. Cranford, who recently moved there. The brothers had not met in twenty-two years before. --- V.M. Pittman arrived Monday from Lexington, Kentucky to spend a few weeks with his mother and sister. --- Several negroes received long sentences at circuit court last week. The young Burrows negro who killed his father John Burrows got a life sentence; Will Huguley for murder was sentenced to twelve years; Bob Handley of Roanoke got six years for assaulting Nick Wright. --- LIME News Joe Allison of Texas is visiting his brother Wade Allison at this place. --- WEHADKEE News Mrs. Martha Davis passed away after a short illness. --- Miss Polly Arrington, a beautiful young lady, entered into her reward after a short illness of typhoid fever. --- Last Friday, Mrs. W.N. Young died of pneumonia and was buried at Big Spring on Saturday. She leaves a husband and nine children. --- ROCK MILLS News Thursday the death angel visited the home of Mr. and Mrs. J.R. Phillips and bore the spirit of Mr. Phillips to the home beyond. His death was most sudden. He served as a juryman in Wedowee all week, returning to his home Saturday night feeling as well as usual. At 10 o'clock he was stricken with paralysis and his summons came early Thursday morning. Mr. Phillips has been a citizen of this town for many years and the entire community is grieved over its loss. He was a good husband, kind and loving father and a devout christian. Funeral services were conducted by his pastor, Rev. W.J. Layton, after which the body was interred in the new cemetery. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family. --- HAPPY LAND News At the home of J.H. Arnett, Esq., Mr. Jno. Sims and Miss Mattie Lee Brand embarked on the matrimonial sea a few days since, Mr. Arnett officiating. --- Jesse Lane of Georgia has moved on Henry Burditt's farm. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, March 15, 1911 FUNERAL OF GORDON PHELPS The remains of Mr. Gordon Phelps, whose death occurred on the 5th inst. in Amarillo, Texas, arrived in Roanoke Wednesday afternoon, accompanied by Mr. L.G. Staples, a brother-in-law, and Mr. D.D. Hurley, a friend of the deceased. Friends escorted the body to the home of the distressed parents, Mr. and Mrs. R.P. Phelps, where it rested over till Thursday morning at 10 o'clock when it was borne to the Methodist church where funeral services were conducted by Revs. S.L. Dobbs and F.H. Farrington. The interment was in the town cemetery. Many manifestations of sympathy were shown the bereaved family. --- LOCAL News Mrs. R.H. Fallaw of Opelika visited her brother T.C. Goodwin on Saturday and Sunday. --- A.P. Phelps of Troup County came over Saturday to visit his brother R.P. Phelps. --- W.M. Noles of Atlanta is spending a few weeks with relatives in Roanoke and Wedowee. --- J.A. Cline arrived in Roanoke Friday night enroute to his old home at Lamar, after a six years stay in Texas. --- D.B. Tucker spent last week in Americus, Ga., where he is installing a moving picture show. It will be operated by him and Frank M. Hornsby jointly and they hope to begin by the first of April. --- Mrs. W.R. Richardson died last Friday in Lowell leaving a husband and seven children. The remains were interred at High Pine on Saturday. Rev. C.B. Martin conducted the services. --- BACON LEVEL News Mrs. C.L. Hudson is suffering with inflammatory rheumatism of the throat and neck. --- LIME News Mr. and Mrs. Watson Parrish spent Saturday and Sunday with the latter's mother Mrs. Ida Hester at this place. --- Mr. William Burgess is dangerously ill. --- ROCK MILLS News Our town was saddened by a telegram on Thursday announcing the death of Mrs. Mag Webb. Mrs. Webb had been a citizen of this place for many years until a few months past when she moved to Lanett. She leaves a husband and five children. Funeral services were conducted her Friday by her pastor Rev. W.J. Layton. --- LOCAL News Ed Barsh, a negro who was shot in an affray near town recently, died yesterday afternoon. He had been removed to Roanoke in order to have the more constant care of a physician. --- NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, March 22, 1911 LOCAL News The remains of Mrs. J.W. Gillam who died in LaGrange yesterday morning, were transferred to the Central road, over which they were taken to Lafayette for interment, accompanied by the husband and others. --- Mrs. W.F. Ussery received news last week of the death of her step-father Mr. D.A. Fowler, which occurred near San Antonio, Texas. The deceased formerly lived in Tallapoosa county. Mr. and Mrs. Ussery left Tuesday for San Antonio where they will remain for a month. --- Wm. Mitchell returned to Talbotton, Ga., on Sunday after a visit of several days to his sons G.T. and W.E. Mitchell. --- Mr. and Mrs. John L. Miller returned to Newnan on Sunday after a visit to relatives in Roanoke. --- NAPOLEON News "Uncle" Jim Nichols, 85 years old, happened to the misfortune of falling and fracturing his hip last week. It was thought for several days that he could not recover, though now appears likely to get well. --- "Grandma" Savage, 83 years old, is lying very low, and not likely to recover. --- LOCAL News Mrs. Davis, mother of J.T. Shanks, is critically ill. --- A.C. Dunn and family left this morning for Phebia, Miss., where they will make their future home. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, March 29, 1911 LIME News On the 14th of this month this community was made to sorrow by the death of Mr. William Burgess. He was a good citizen and a member of the Christian Church at this place. His life is worthy of emulation. --- BACON LEVEL News Mr. Jim Talley of Texas, Ga., visited relatives here last week. --- MRS. DAVIS DEAD At 6 o'clock last evening Mrs. Marion Eliza Davis, the venerable mother of Mr. J.T. Shanks and Miss Nobie Davis died at her home in this place. She was 77 years of age and along time member of the Baptist church. The funeral services will be conducted by her pastor from the church at 3 o'clock this afternoon and the interment will be in Cedarwood cemetery. --- LOCAL News Last Sunday afternoon at the home of Mr. and Mrs. M.P. Stewart, of Level Road, their daughter Miss Emma Stewart was married to Mr. Mack Green of Abanda. The same day, Mr. Jim Shearer and Miss Mollie Brown of Broughton went to Georgia and were married. --- Misses Isabella nd Leila Shanks and Messrs. Lon Shanks and Oscar Shellnutt were called here some days ago by the critical illness of their grandmother Mrs. Davis. --- J.R. Tidwell is expected to return today from a visit to his old home at Ellerslie, Georgia. While there he attended the funeral of his brother's wife. --- F.C. Power was called to Buford, Ga., yesterday by the serious illness of his father. --- Mrs. Martha Hagin, an aged and highly esteemed lady, died at the home of her son-in-law, Mr. J.L. Gresham near Denver early Wednesday morning last. She was nearly ninety-one years old and was a lady widely known for her piety and greatly beloved for her many charms and character and loveable personality. The Franklin News and Banner The deceased was the grandmother of Mrs. J.T. Striplin of Randolph County, Ala. ---- ROCK MILLS News Mr. and Mrs. W.F.
