Death occurred at 1:10 p.m. Mr. Smith was about 55 years of age and a widower and leaves a mother and one daughter in Birmingham. He was a son of Governor W.H. Smith who was governor during the period from 1868 to 1870 and was himself at one time widely known in politics, having run for governor on the republican ticket in 1903. His daughter is Mrs. Ida Fillanon of Birmingham. His four sisters are Misses Annie and Lula Smith, Mrs. Mary West, Mrs. J. Fletcher McCary of Birmingham; a brother Wm. Smith his law partner survives, and a nephew Will West. Mr. Smith was born in Wedowee and moved to Birmingham 19 years ago. RADNEY CALLED BY DEATH Randolph County lost one of her most prominent and useful citizens when at 3 o'clock last Friday morning, Hon. William A. Radney answered the summons of death at his home in Wadley beat. He had been ill nearly a week but his condition was not considered serious. Only a few minutes before the sudden call came he had been conversing with his wife. Mr. Radney was born in Georgia but had been living in this county since 1853. All but one year of that time he had been a citizen of the beat in which he died. He was nearly 65 years of age and was a Confederate veteran. He leaves a widow and six grown sons, as follows: J.P. and T.H. Radney of Roanoke; M.H. , H.B., and C.M. Radney of Wadley; and W.L. Radney of Alexander City, all esteemed business men of their respective towns. The deceased always took an active interest in public affairs and was a loyal friend to every cause. At the time of his death he was a member of the county board of education. He had long been an official member of the Methodist church and served several terms as president of the county Sunday school association. While other men might be content to sit down and criticise, Mr. Radney was up, and doing his part. Like most men of action he made mistakes but the good that he accomplished cannot be calculated. He was cheerful and optimistic and his presence was always refreshing. The token of appreciation in which Mr. Radney was held was evidenced by the great outpouring of his friends that filled the church to overflowing at the Pleasant Hill church Saturday morning, when the funeral services were conducted. Appreciations were spoken by Revs. O.L. Millican, G.G. Smith, S.L. Dobbs and B.T. Waites. The remains were carried to the old burying ground at Wadley for interment. ---- BROUGHTON News, by Geo. W.
