WILLIAMS PASSED AWAY AT THE HOME OF HIS DAUGHTER SATURDAY Last Saturday morning, Mr. Caleb N. Williams passed away at the home of his daughter Mrs. W.C. Hunter, in this place. He was 79 years of age and had been in failing health for many months. The remains were taken Sunday to Fredonia where they were interred after funeral services conducted by Rev. F.H. Farrington. For many years, Mr. Williams resided at Fredonia where he reared a family. He was regarded as one of the best citizens of his county. He was a member of the Baptist church. A year or so ago he lost his wife. His last days were spent with his daughter in Roanoke where he was lovingly care for to the end. --- DEATH OF ADOLPHUS FOSTER Rock Mills, Dec. 26th Friday morning, Dec. 22nd at 5 o'clock, the white winged messenger came to the home of Mr. and Mrs. N.T. Foster and summoned their youngest child Adolphus to come home. Adolphus was 23 years of age, a consistent member of the Baptist church and was recently made a deacon. We realize that our town has lost one of its choicest young men. He was always ready at any time to work for his Master. Shortly before the end came he sang "I'm the Child of a King" and from his daily walk, we know that he is. Funeral services were conducted by his pastor, Rev. W.J. Layton, after which the body was laid to rest in Wehadkee cemetery. The deceased leaves a mother, father, two sisters and three brothers. We extend our sympathy to each one. --- NAPOLEON News Dec. 28th A son was born Christmas eve to Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Huey. --- Last Sunday Mr. Ross Kirby took to himself a wife in the person of Miss Cordelia Ussery. --- Mr. Ivus Bailey was happily married to Miss Ruby Burgess at the home of Mr. Jim Sikes, her stepfather, last Sunday. --- LOCAL News L.J. Trammell and family of Five Points passed through Roanoke on Friday enroute to Lineville where they will make their home. --- WEHADKEE News Mrs. Thomas Creed and children of Ellis County, Texas are visiting relatives in our community. --- Mrs. Robert Hood passed to her reward. The deceased was a consistent member of the Baptist church. Many will rise up and call her blessed. She leaves a husband and nine children and a host of friends to mourn her death. The interment was at Big Spring. --- SLAYER'S WIFE DIES Mollie Allums, who was shot by her husband last Wednesday evening at their home in the negro section, died Friday night. Charlie Allums the slayer, gave himself up. Friday he had a preliminary trial before Mayor Nichols for killing Veal, the man in the house with Mollie Allums at the time of the killings, and was held in default of a bond of $1000. Today he will be given a hearing on the charge of killing his wife. --- WEDOWEE News The old building torn away by J.J. Huckeba to give a place for his new store, has been standing near 75 years. Tradition says that in this building soldiers enlisted for the Mexican War and for the War Between the States. Mr. Huckeba used one of the old sills in his new building. The sill is of fat pine. ---- LEGAL NOTICE Notice is hereby given to all whom it may concern that on the 28th day of December 1911, Earlie Orr, guardian of the estate of W.C. Orr, non compus mentis, filed her application in the Probate Court of Randolph County, Alabama as such guardian, in writing, under oath, praying for the sale of certain lands in Clay County, Alabama belonging to the estate of her said ward, for reinvestment in personal property or for lending the proceeds of the sale. And the 22nd day of January 1912 has been apponted the day for hearing said petition. This 28th day of December 1911. John T. Johnson In this cause it is made to appear to the Register, by the affidavit of G.B. Walker, attorney for complaintant, that Mrs. M.H. Johnson is a non-resident of the state of Alabama, and resides in Montgomery County, Mississippi and that she is over the age of twenty-one years. This, is therefore to notify the said Mrs. M.H. Johnson of the pendency of this cause and further, than unless you answer, plead or demur to the bill of complaint within thirty days from the 15th day of February 1912, a decree pro confesso will be taken against you under the rules of law provided in such cases. Howell, one of our rural mail carriers, was called to attend the funeral of his father Mr. Eli Howell at Macedonia in Chambers county last Friday. The deceased was a respected citizen of our neighboring county. --- Mr. and Mrs. L.A. Holley returned to Atlanta Monday after a pleasant visit to relatives and many friends in Roanoke and Rock Mills. They had not been here in thirteen years and noted many changes in the town. --- E.N. Kendrick and Miss Jemima Folsom were married at the home of the bride at Centre Point last Sunday. Rev. J.M. Yates performed the ceremony. --- Mrs. F.G. Anderson of Columbus and W.T. Cofield of Granger, Texas are visiting the family of Rev. W.P. Cofield. --- W.B. Neighbors, a former citizen of Roanoke but now of Seattle, Washington was in town Monday and Tuesday. --- Mr. and Mrs. Tom Awbrey have gone to Augusta, Georgia where the former has a good position. --- John Barker has gone to Columbus to accept a position with the Bell Telephone Co. --- R.A. Breed of Jackson, Ala., is visiting his sister Mrs. W.T. Yates. --- NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, January 10, 1912 MARRIED SUNDAY At the home of W.A. Arnold in this place, his brother E.G. Arnold and Miss Lucy Belle Green, both of Taylor's Cross Roads, were united in marriage Sunday afternoon. The ceremony was performed by Rev. A.S. Brannan at 4:30 o'clock and witnessed only by a few friends. --- BACON LEVEL News Jan. 8th After an illness of only six days of pneumonia, J. Leonard Bradshaw, one of the prominently connected young men of this community, died at his mother's home last Friday morning at one o'clock. He was perhaps one of the most loved young men of the entire countryside, his unusual kindness of disposition having won for him a host of friends who were shocked to hear of his death. Rev. W.H. Henry conducted funeral services at the Baptist church after which the interment took place at Bacon Level cemetery. Mr. Bradshaw was 26 years of age, a prominent member of the Standing Rock Camp W.O.W. (Woodmen of the World) and was a successful planter, having managed his mother's business here for a number of years. He is survived by his mother Mrs. Mary Bradshaw; two sisters, Mrs. Ernest Howell of Riverview and Miss Ozella Bradshaw of this place; four brothers, Charles Bradshaw of Opelika; Oscar Bradshaw of Abbeville, Ala.; and Sam and Herbert Bradshaw, both of this place. The bereaved family and relatives have the sympathy of all their friends. ---- "Uncle" Johnnie Phillips visited his brother William at LaGrange last week. The latter is in feeble health. --- John Pitts is sick with lagrippe. --- WADLEY News Miss Maud Bass of Wedowee is visiting her sister Mrs. Conner Coleman. --- Mrs. G.O. Lankford has been quite sick but is convalescing. --- MR. McCOLLUM TO MARRY T.C. McCollum will leave today for Anniston where he will be married at 10 o'clock tomorrow to Miss Annie Laurie Massenburg. The ceremony will occur at the home of the bride-elect and will be performed by Rev. George Stoves. --- LOCAL News Dr. Slappey received a telegram Saturday announcing the death of his brother J.H. Slappey in Mobile where he had gone for an operation. --- Mrs. W.J. Mann visited her sister Mrs. Lankford who is ill at Wadley for several days. She brought home with her the latter's little son. --- Mrs. F.P. Rains of Hogansville is the guest of Mrs. J.T. Striplin. --- For Sale - - - Shingle Mill in good condition. Apply to E.W. Fomby, at Glenn, Georgia --- Woodfin Brannan left last week for Texas, to try his fortune. --- Mrs. M. Schuessler returned last week from Anniston, where the was called by the death of her father Mr. Dobbins. --- NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, January 24, 1912 LOCAL News Charles F. Striplin of Ashland informed the Leader that he was preparing to move to Tennessee soon. --- Rev. S.L. Dobbs received news yesterday afternoon that his sister Mrs. A.P. Arthur was thought to be dying at her home near Collinsville. He will leave today for that place. --- WADLEY News Jan. 22nd Mrs. John McGill is seriously ill with typhoid fever. --- Mrs. M. Handley has as her guest her father Mr. Moore from Memphis. --- HAPPY LAND News Mrs. Thomas Chewning died last Tuesday night and was buried the following day at New Hope. --- John W. Pearson and family have returned from the West and are living on Warren Hood's place. --- ROCK MILLS News Last Tuesday night Mrs. Ed Burk passed away. She was about 70 years of age and had been a good citizen of this place most of her life. The body was interred at Wehadkee cemetery Wednesday. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Mr. Moore. --- LOCAL News H.M. Mickle and his family celebrated his 75th birthday on Saturday. Though his health has improved some, he is still confined to his room. --- Two recent deaths are reported at Standing Rock; Mr. Thomas J. Hines, an old and respected citizen and Will Dewberry, a young man and a member of a prominent family of that community. --- Mark Smith, the young man who killed his sister's husband Turner Lewis, in Gadsden some weeks ago, was last Thursday convicted on a verdict of second degree murder and given a sentence of forty years imprisonment. The man slain was a son of S.J. Lewis of the Wehadkee section and was raised in this county. --- Mrs. J.T. Pearson and Mr. and Mrs. Cliff Williams are visiting the family of the former's brother, J.D. Myhand. They recently moved from Texas to Gainsville, Ala. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, January 31, 1912 WADLEY News Jan. 29th We are very sorry to record the death of Mrs. John Willingham McGill, which occurred Saturday evening. Mrs. McGill was a consecrated christian woman. She leaves a husband, several brothers and sisters and many friends to mourn their loss. --- LOCAL News The editor of the West Point and Lanett News has recently passed through a double bereavement. January 11th his venerable mother passed to her reward and eight days later the former's eldest sister followed the mother. The writer wishes to extend a simple but sincere expression of sympathy to Bro. Bankston in his sore distress. --- Miss Velma Mitchell who has been visiting Mrs. W.E. Hester, returned Sunday to her home in Carrollton, Ga. --- WEHADKEE News Jan. 29th Tessie, the little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Young is quite sick with scarlet fever. --- Mrs. J.W. Robertson has been in feeble health for several days past. --- ROCK MILLS News Mrs. Albert Fowler of Bowdon, Ga., spent last week with her parents Mrs. and Mrs. Isaac Vineyard. --- Mrs. Tom Vineyard visited her son Dr. T.L. Vineyard at Simpson recently. --- Last Wednesday, Mr. Bud Tittle dropped dead at his home two miles west of this place. The deceased was carried to Wehadkee on Friday for interment. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. W.R.
