He has been in failing health for quite a while. --- Mrs. Martha Nixon celebrated her seventy-third birthday today. May this venerable lady live to enjoy many more happy occasions like this. --- NAPOLEON News (by G.O. Hill, correspondent) June 27th A daughter was born this week to Mr. and Mrs. C.M. Cumby. --- A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Grover Williams last week. This is about our thirtieth grandchild. --- A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Lester Allen last week. --- LOCAL News Mrs. Berry Holder is seriously ill. --- Misses Edna and Mary Cook of Cooksville, Ga., are the guests of their cousin Mrs. Olin Wilson. --- John W. Bugg and bride returned to Columbus Sunday after a visit to the former's parents near Dickert. --- Mrs. W.A. Arnold has as her guest Mrs. L.H. Taylor of Dallas, Texas. --- Mrs. P.B. Tatum, the wife of a prominent citizen of Abanda, died last Friday, after a long illness of tuberculosis. --- Mitchell Avery left Monday for Boulder, Colorado where he will pursue his medical studies for some time. --- Mr. and Mrs. W.C. Lane left yesterday to spend two weeks visiting in Tyler and other points in Texas. --- W.D. Hunter, residing at Buffalo, was caught in the fly wheel of a gasoline engine at that place Saturday, breaking his left leg and badly mutilating his body. At the last report he was resting well and it is not thought it will be necessary to amputate. --- WEDOWEE News Mr. J.C. Walker and family are preparing to start in a few days to visit relatives in Texas. --- The funeral of Will Noles, who died in Atlanta, was conducted from the M.E. church last Thursday at 11 o'clock, by Rev. W.J.D. Upshaw. --- Dr. and Mrs. H.U. Mashburn left Saturday for Eclectic, Elmore County where they will make their future home. Wedowee regrets to lose these good people. --- BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION Jas. P. Williams of Montgomery was here last week. He came Wednesday to attend the celebration of the 77th birthday of his mother Mrs. L.J. Williams at the home of her daughter Mrs. A.J. Gibson of Macedonia. There were present 8 children, 3 absent; 30 grandchildren, 9 absent; 29 great grandchildre, 30 absent. Tatum and family attended the marriage of their cousin Miss Salemna Tatum to Woodson Barnes of Dudleyville, at the home of the bride's father L.A. Tatum at Milltown on Saturday afternoon. Little Marybeth Tatum was flower girl. A large company of friends were present. Rev. J.S. Robertson performed the ceremony. --- OBITUARY On the night of the 8th inst., death visited the home of Bro. Pleas Wilson at Glenn, Ga and took the dear wife and mother. She was 69 years and a month old and a faithful member of the Baptist church for 49 years and a companion of 46 years. She is survived by her husband and eight children, seven sons and one daughter. She was laid to rest at Glenn, Ga., in the presence of her sorrow stricken family and a host of loving friends. "Her life work was well done, Life's crown was well won, And now she has gone to her rest." C.B. Gay in Lineville. --- R.H. Harris is dangerously ill. --- NAPOLEON News July 13th Miss Kate Barton, daughter of the late Esq. Babe Barton, who was an inmate of the asylum at Tuscaloosa, died of heart trouble last week and was buried at Haywood last Saturday. Katie was a good, lovable girl and was admired and respected by all who knew her. -- ROCK MILLS News Mrs. Bonner and son Gerson left Sunday for Clanton where they go to the bedside of the former's brother Clark Harper who is not expected to live. --- "Uncle" Doc Farrow who has been confined to his room several days is critically ill. --- LOCAL News Mrs. Emil Zobel and children have gone to Tifton, Ga. to visit relatives. --- Madison Liles, an aged and respected citizen, died Monday at his home several miles west of town, after a long illness. He was buried at Mt. Zion at 11 o'clock Tuesday. --- Mrs. J.J. Ragland left yesterday to spend two weeks with her father at Sewanee, Georgia. --- Mr. and Mrs. Robert Brown had as their guests some days ago Z.T. Gorham and wife of LaGrange and John Gorham and wife of Texas. --- H.B. Radney and family leave this morning to attend a family reunion at the home of H.E. Allen at Zana. --- NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, July 24, 1912 WADLEY News Mrs. J.H. Hand, an aged lady, died here Sunday night. She leaves a husband, two daughters, Mrs. Annie Fife of Jonesboro, Ga., and Mrs. George Hammond of West Point, Ga., and a host of friends to mourn her loss. Interment will be at Truett tomorrow. --- Mrs. R.B. Kilgore left last week on a two weeks visit in Weogufka and Lineville. --- MRS. CARRIE MOORE DIED IN LAGRANGE LAST THURSDAY AT THE AGE OF 86 YEARS; WAS FORMER ROANOKE RESIDENT The sad death of Mrs. Carrie Moore occurred at noon Thursday. Mrs. Moore was born and raised in Troup County and for the past thirty years she has lived in LaGrange. She was the wife of Mr. S.W. Moore, who was in the grocery business up to the time of his death several years ago. Since that time Mrs. Moore has lived with her daughter Mrs. Maggie Fleeth on Ridley Ave. Mrs. Moore had reached the age of 86 years. She leaves behind her many friends to whom she had endeared herself by her noble and unselfish bearing on all occasions, and who are grieved at her passing. There is a measure of consolation in the secure knowledge that her gentle spirit has gone to the Eternal City, there to meet the loved ones who have gone before. Nothing too good can be said of this most loved woman; only that we could live the life that she lived, and be what she has been. For over half a century she was constantly doing christian work and was a member of the Methodist church. She leaves behind one daughter Mrs. Maggie Fleeth, and two grandchildren, Mr. Paul Fleeth and Mrs. Austin Cook, who have the sympathy of everybody. The funeral services will be held at the home of Mrs. Fleeth on Friday at 2:30 p.m. The LaGrange Reporter Mrs. Moore lived in Roanoke a few years with her daughter Mrs. Fleeth and was esteemed by all her Roanoke friends as an elect christian lady. ---- AUTOMOBILE ACCIDENT Last Saturday near Rock Mills, Mrs. Jessie Holley and children were riding in the former's automobile, driven by her brother Allen Ray, when the edge of a deep ditch crumbled under the wheels of the car, plunging it to the bottom and demolishing the top of the machine. Mrs. Holley had her left arm broken at the shoulder and her right arm at the wrist. None of the others were seriously injured. --- ENGAGEMENT ANNOUNCED Mrs. John Russell Ware of LaGrange, Ga., announces the engagement of her daughter Saidee to Mr. Cornelius Elmer Hines of Standing Rock, Ala., the marriage to take place in September. --- WEHADKEE News Will Fincher, who was working for W.C. Enloe near this place, happened to a very sad accident last Tuesday afternoon. While trying to bridle a mule colt the animal gave him a death blow, breaking his nose and fracturing his skull. The young man only lived 28 hours afterward. The deceased was about 17 years old and the only son of Mrs. Jane Fincher. The interment was at Big Spring Thursday afternoon, services conducted by T.J. Camp. --- Mrs. John Townsend died last Saturday after a long illness of consumption. The deceased was about 40 years old. She leaves a husband and one son to mourn her death. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. W.H. Wright at Big Spring on Sunday afternoon in the presence of a large congregation. --- BACON LEVEL News Frank Crowder is still seriously ill. --- CORBIN News Luther Bradley and family of Rodgers, Texas are visiting relatives in this community. --- LOCAL News J.D. Wood of Paran community, left Sunday for Denver, Colorado where he will make his home for some time. --- W.N. Spinks enjoyed a recent visit from his mother. --- Mrs. J.M. Caswell announced the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter Miss Mattie Irma to Mr. John Cephas Taylor, the wedding to take place September 8th. They will be at home after Oct. 1st in Birmingham, Ala. --- MARRIED SUNDAY EVENING At the home of J.C. Brinkley of this city at 9:30 o'clock Sunday evening, Mr. John D. Anchors and Mrs. Isabelle K. Mahone were united in marriage, Rev. S.L. Dobbs performing the ceremony. The couple left on the A B & A train for their home near Macon, Ga. Mrs. Anchors is the mother of Mrs. Brinkley and is a sister of Bishop Joseph S. Key of the Southern Methodist church. --- LOCAL News Mrs. R.A. Paschal of Union Springs was in Roanoke the first of the week coming to bring her mother Mrs. F.C. Owen who will remain some time with Mrs. Randle. --- Sheriff John W. Lane was in town yesterday. He was returning from a visit to his father-in-law T.H. Elder, whom he reported as improving from a severe illness. Mrs. Lane remained with her father. --- Lewis Bingham has succeeded in securing the services of a crack baseball team and opened a series of games in Opelika yesterday, the result showing a close victory for Opelika in a score of 8 to 7. --- BROUGHTON News Sam Cantrell and wife of Haywood visited here Saturday and Sunday. --- "Uncle" Ab Brown continues quite ill. --- ROCK MILLS News July 29th Mrs. Jas. Walker received a telegram Monday morning stating that her son Clark Harper was dying at his home in Clanton. --- Mrs. J.W. Ray spent last week with her daughter Mrs. Jesse Holley. --- Mrs. Dorcas Philpott and children of Hogansville visited Mr. Hearn and wife last week. --- Cenie Bell Sheppard of Shawmut has come to spend a month with her grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Mat Pitts. --- NAPOLEON News July 26th Homer French and Miss Exa Kirby, and Alex. Stevens and Miss Dura Kirby sought the Gretna Green route across the Georgia line Sunday morning and returned full fledged grooms and brides in the afternoon. These happy brides are the daughters of Bud Kirby; the grooms live near Wedowee. --- Mrs. John Kirby was stricken with paralysis Thursday evening. The stroke affected principally her right side.
