Parrish was at the bedside of his sister Mrs. Barsh at Social Circle from Friday until Sunday. She is very sick with typhoid fever. --- Mrs. Arthur Sikes has typhoid fever. A trained nurse is in attendance. Her husband who has also been ill is improving. --- WADLEY News Sept. 30th Robert Bass and family of Wedowee were the guests of the former's sister Mrs. Conner Coleman on Saturday and Sunday. --- Mrs. Annie Gamble is visiting her sons and daughters in Birmingham. --- Roscoe Roberts and family of Marcoot were the guest of Mrs. Roberts' parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Gay, on Saturday and Sunday. --- Rev. C.C. Godbey returned last Tuesday from Paint Rock where he went for the purpose of accompanying his family home. Mrs. Godbey and children have spent the summer with the former's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Tipton. --- LOCAL News I.L. Ballew is preparing to move his family from Wedowee to Columbus, Georgia. --- W.S. Green and his brother-in-law M.F. Rodgers have established a plan near the power house for the making of sewer pipes and are now ready for work. --- NAPOLEON News Sept. 23rd Mr. Bill Phelps of Graham was happily wedded to Miss May Shelnutt on Sunday. Rev. Cicero Cole officiated. --- BROUGHTON News Sept. 30th Willis Reaves of Cooledge, Texas is visiting relatives in this community. --- CORBIN News Sept. 30th Polie Sikes and Miss Vera Strain were happily married yesterday morning at the home of J.S. Strain, the bride's father. Rev. J.C. Grant officiated. --- WEHADKEE News (by S.D. Lewis, correspondent) Sept. 30th J.E. Gay has sold his place to C.H. Green and bought land from R.D. Gay. --- Mrs. Jack Young had the misfortune to fall out at a high door last Thursday and broke her arm. --- Albert Smith near Omaha lost his dwelling house by fire last Tuesday. Nothing was saved. --- The writer received news over the telephone that George Buchanan shot and killed Thornton Ragsdale near Brockville Saturday evening. Whiskey is said to be the cause of the killing. We received another message this morning stating that Sam Gore shot and killed John Hale in beat four, Sunday night. Whiskey is said to have played a part in this tragedy also. --- HAPPY LAND News Sept. 27th Miss Chloe Cordelia Fincher is the newest addition to Lonie Fincher's family. --- LOCAL News Mrs. J.H. Harris and granddaughter Miss Herd Harris passed through town yesterday, returning to Oakbowery from a stay of some weeks with the former's son at Abanda, J.P. Harris, who has just returned from a trip to St. Louis. --- Mrs. J.L. B. Green passed through Roanoke yesterday to visit her father Mr. John Kirk, who is quite ill, having been operated on for appendicitis in Atlanta. --- Cecil Weaver arrived last week from Hillsboro, Texas to enter school here. --- Sam Muldrew has gone to Atlanta to study medicine. --- Charlie Vinson has accepted a position as manager of the Western Union office in Athens, Ala. --- W.M. Rodgers and daughter Miss Essie of Perry, Georgia are visiting the former's son, W.B. Rodgers who has been quite sick. --- NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, October 9, 1912 KILLED BY LIGHTNING Yesterday morning, the remains of G.D. Pittman arrived over the Central railroad from Wilcox, Arizona, accompanied by the deceased's sister, Miss Lena Pittman. Mr. Pittman lost his life last Wednesday by a stroke of lightning. The devoted sister then started on the long and mournful pilmigrage, bringing the body home to rest in the family burying ground seven miles northeast of town. The funeral services were conducted at Springfield yesterday afternoon by Rev. S.L. Dobbs, in the presence of many sympathizing friends. The unfortunate young man was the son of Mr. and Mrs. J.F. Pittman. He had entered a tract of land and would have soon secured his deed. His sister had gone out West to be with him and teach school. The sad tragedy which has so suddenly overtaken this good family has evoked the sympathy of many friends. ---- DEATH OF MR. JAMES B. JONES The death of Mr. James B. Jones, an old and respected citizen of Rock Mills, occurred last Wednesday night after along period of ill health. The remains were brought to Roanoke for interment Thursday afternoon. The funeral was conducted from the Methodist church, of which the deceased was a devoted member. Rev. S.L. Dobbs was in charge and was asssited by Rev. J.S. Robertson. --- WEDOWEE News Oct. 7th The preliminary hearing of Sam Gore for the killing of John Hale was held Saturday. He was placed under bond of $1000. to await the action of the grand jury. --- Sanford Shelnutt of near Rock Mills is preparing to build on the farm recently purchased from Mr. Cape Willingham. He will move here soon and put his children in school. We welcome him among us. --- WHISKEY CASES HEARD IN MAYOR'S COURT C.N. Briskey, charged in three cases with selling liquor, plead guilty and fined $275. T.T. Harper, charged with aiding and abetting in selling liquor, fined $25. Robert Sharman, same charge, plead guilty, fined $25. Emmett Carroll, same charge, nol prossed. Henry McMurray, same charge, nol prossed. ---- WEHADKEE News Oct. 7th W.L. Gay and little daughter are quite sick with typhoid fever. -- Mr. and Mrs. Berry Green are in Atlanta attending the latter's father who is dangerously ill. -- Mrs. Head and son Howard continue very ill. --- Arthur Robertson, Henry Jones, Berry Moses and Martin Morris have gone to Cullman county prospecting. --- LOCAL News For Sale or Rent; 59 acres of good land, 6 miles from Roanoke, one half in cultivation. Large new school house on the place. T.R. Burgess, Roanoke, Ala. --- T.J. Prather, a good citizen of Five Points, has purchased C.H. Cole's residence and will move to Roanoke later this season. --- A negro named Milton Smith was killed near Five Points Saturday night by a mule running away with him. The negro's neck was broken. --- The writer in in receipt of an invitation to the fifteenth wedding anniversary of the wedding of Olin V. Ward and his wife who was formerly Miss Augustus Amos. The occasion is announced to be celebrated in their home in Five Points Friday evening, Oct. 10th, seven to ten o'clock. --- J.T. Lyon has moved his family to Birmingham where they will make their home and where he expects to conduct a residence studio. --- H.L. Griffin was called home from Texas last week by the death of his brother and the illness of his sister in Opelika. --- Mrs. Mary Sharp was called Monday to attend her brother J.H.B. East in Wedowee who is seriously ill. Wyatt and Mitchell East of Phenix City, his brothers, are also with him. --- Mrs. Allie Kemp of Columbus, Miss., is visiting her daughter Mrs. M.D. Thompson. --- F.C. Hodges who has been visiting his brother F.D. Hodges for some weeks, left Friday for Ozark where he will enter the drug business. --- WADLEY News Oct. 7th Mr. Jim Thompson will go to Birmingham tomorrow to be the guest of his niece, Mrs. Keener Mathews for a few days. --- Mrs. Robertson, after spending a year here with her daughter Mrs. W.G. Floyd, will leave for her home in Texas tomorrow. --- Mrs. Coley Motley who has been quite ill is better. --- NOTICE OF LAND SALE On Wednesday, the 16th day of October 1912, we will sell to the highest bidder for cash, the Robert Young old home place near Midway school house, containing 160 acres, about 75 acres in cultivation, 10 acres in pasture, balance in woods, with two settlements, well supplied with water, convenient to church and school. Kirk and family visited relatives in LaGrange last week. --- Carl Fuller and family moved to LaGrange yesterday. --- Guy Cofield of the Lafayette Sun was with relatives and friends in Roanoke on Sunday. --- The Leader is pleased to report that Jim Tom Liles is improving, having been quite ill with the fever. --- Miss Myrtle Park who is teaching the primary grades at Milltown was at home Saturday and Sunday. --- W.H. Morrow of the Wehadkee Yarn Mills was in town Saturday enroute to Talladega to spend Sunday with his two sisters who are teaching in that city. --- Mrs. T.W. Smith died in Lowell Monday, leaving a husband and child. The remains were interred at New Hope in Chambers county. --- Edgar Holliday and family went to Selma this morning to visit relatives. --- A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Walter Slagle Friday and a daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. John Sledge on Sunday. --- Gen. B.F. Weathers, J.W. Belcher, Thomas McCarley and Jesse Fausett left yesterday for Selma to attend the state reunion of the United Confederate Veterans. --- Mrs. Q.V. Walls spent the past week with her son J.A. Walls. J.B. Cosper of Frolona, Ga., was the guest of Mr. Walls on Sunday. --- The Leader had a call Saturday at the same time from two veterans of the Confederacy, N.D. Hornsby and M.P. Pittman. Another old veteran, A.J. Green, called a week before to renew his subscriptions. --- WADLEY News Mrs. C. Jenkins returned to her home at Kellyton Sunday after a weeks visit to the family of J.M. Gay. She was accompanied home by her granddaughter Miss Susie Gay who goes to spend the winter at Kellyton. --- WEHADKEE News Jeff Brown is quite sick with typhoid fever. --- Mrs. J.E. Brown is sick with the fever. --- NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, October 23, 1912 WADLEY News Mrs. Jeter has been confined to her bed for the past two weeks. --- BACON LEVEL News Oct. 21st Mr. W.D. Henry and Miss Maggie Pittman were married at the bride's home north of Roanoke last Thursday at sunset. They will make their home with the groom's parents, Mr. and Mrs. N.C. Henry. --- Sunday morning, Mr. Steve Allen and Miss Ina Smith went down to Evansville and were married. --- ROCK MILLS News Oct. 22nd Miss Martha Whitley died in LaGrange on Saturday. Her remains were brought here for burial. Rev. G.M. Bynum conducted funeral services at Wehadkee Sunday afternoon. --- Mrs. Ernest Andrews of West Point and Mrs. Bessie Warner of Paduka, Kentucky were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. J.S. Yates on Sunday. --- Mrs. Harvey Jones and son Sam spent Sunday with the former's mother "Aunt" Pollie McDaniel. --- Mr. John Smith has purchased land near Cullman and will move his family there in the near future. --- LOCAL News Mrs. A.C. Moore went to Alex City yesterday to visit relatives. --- T.J. Camp of beat 5 was one of the Leader's old and valued friends who called to renew his subscription on Saturday. The people who know him well call him "Uncle Tom" and regard him as one of the best men in the county. --- H.H. Pitts and sons Bernard and Herbert were in Roanoke Monday enroute to attend the fair in Montgomery. --- J.H. Strong was called to LaGrange last week by the fatal illness of his brother Charles E. Strong whose death occurred Saturday night, the interment following Monday. The deceased was one of LaGrange's most popular and esteemed citizens. --- WADLEY News Oct. 21st Mrs. C. Coker and Miss Alice Hodge go to Wedowee today to attend the Benbow - Stewart wedding. Miss Hodge is to be one of the bride's maids. --- Jim Fuller and little son Grady visited the latter's grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Prince at Abbott's Ford on Sunday. --- Mrs. H.D. Pearson was called to Opelika this afternoon by the death of her brother Mr. Henry Williamson. --- LOCAL News Mrs. Homer Wilson is in LaGrange attending her grandmother Mrs. J.J. Ware, whose death is expected at any moment. --- Miss Nellie Cook of Glenn, Georgia came last Sunday to spend two weeks with her sister, Mrs. J.O. Wilson. --- W.A. Wilf has added a room to his home, will widen the veranda and otherwise improve his place. Mrs. Wilf's mother and sister Mrs. J.L. Higgins and Miss Ada Higgins will come this fall to make their home at Mr. Wilf's. --- Solomon Benbow, the mayor of Wedowee, accompanied by his fair bride Miss Willie Belle Stewart, were in Roanoke yesterday afternoon enroute to Montgomery and Luverne. They were married in Wedowee yesterday morning. --- BROUGHTON NEws Oct. 21st Virgil Dollar of Pyne, Ga., was a recent visitor in our community. --- Married on Sunday the 13th, R.E. Lynch of Texas to Mrs. Margaret Roberts of this place. --- NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, October 30, 1912 DEATH CLAIMS T.C. BINGHAM Sr.; Father of Roanoke Young Men Passes Away in Birmingham. Thomas Cooke Bingham of Montgomery, secretary and treasurer of the state republican campaign committee, died yesterday morning at 5 o'clock at St. Vincent's Hospital. Mr. Bingham's wife and daughter Miss Effie Bingham were at the bedside when death came. The untimely end caused gloom to settle over the local and state Republican forces and many friends lament the passing of the staunch Republican and well known man. The deceased was 60 years old, having been a resident of this state since his birth. At the time of his death he was a resident of Montgomery and a retired capitalist. He was born in Talladega in 1852. He was a man well spoken of and highly honored by all who had known him during his life time. His death brought sorrow to many hearts. The 19th of October he contracted a bad cold which later developed into a case of pneumonia. The Birmingham Herald, the 28th. Besides his widow, Mr. Bingham leaves a brother J.A. Bingham of Talladega and the following children: T.C. Bingham Jr. of Roanoke L.A. Bingham of Roanoke M.S. Bingham of New Decatur Mrs. O.B. Cornelius of Ashland Misses Ola and Effie Bingham of Montgomery T.C. and L.A. Bingham and M. Schuessler from Roanoke attended the funeral in Talladega on Monday. ---- B.A. RODGERS DEAD Dr. Floyd is in receipt of a letter from Drs. Lane and Hill of Lincoln stating that Mr. B.A. Rodgers, 48 years of age, was dead in that place. He was a carpenter and contractor from Georgia and is thought to have relatives in this section. Hill was thrown from a buggy Sunday morning by an unexpected turn of the horse she was driving and was painfully hurt. --- News was received in Roanoke last Wednesday of the death in Montgomery of the only child of Rev. and Mrs. Jesse A. Cook. Many friends will learn of this sad demise with sympathy. --- The Handley Colored Academy which opened last week, reports a much larger enrollment than last year. W.D. Marsh and Carrie Coleman are the teachers. --- Marion S. Bingham will leave tomorrow with his wife and infant for New Decatur which place will be their home for a while. --- WADLEY News Oct. 28th Mrs. Walter Fletcher and Miss Annie Laurie Culpepper of Opelika are visiting relatives in Wadley. --- Miss Willie Lee Wise of LaFayette is visiting her sister Mrs. Van Berry. --- Mrs. C.C. Moultrie received a message early Sunday morning announcing the death of her brother Rev. J.J. Hooton in Cullman. --- Mrs. Dunlap is very ill. A trained nurse is with her. --- BACON LEVEL News Oct. 28th A marriage that will be of interest to the many friends of the bride occurred Saturday when Miss Bamma Ussery and Mr. Adam Boggs of Norton, Oklahoma drove down to Evansville and were married. They will leave soon for Oklahoma their future home. --- FOR SALE Place known as the W.T. Finley homestead consisting of 174 1/2 acres on public road, leading from Rock Mills to West Point. Large 8 room dwelling house, 30 to 40 foot barn, store building, large cribs, shop and other out buildings. Good tenant house and barn. All land well fenced, one half with hog wire.
