At 4 o'clock he passed to his well earned reward in the eternal city, in whose King he had long since fixed his faith. He had been in feeble health a long time and had expressed his desire to depart. Mr. Hill was a man of retiring disposition but of solid character. He was a loyal member of the Baptist church and a citizen upon whom his community and country could depend in all emergencies. This found illustration in one conspicuous instance in the heroic service he rendered the South as a soldier in the Confederate Army. Mr. Hill was born in Georgia seventy years ago but moved to Randolph county soon after the war. He had been a citizen of Roanoke about 43 years and had been actively identified with the life and growth of the town. Besides many relatives and friends he leaves a widow and two sons. A large congregation attended the funeral services at the Baptist church Monday afternoon which were conducted by Rev. F.H. Farrington. Near the close the Masons gave a part of their ritualistic service, the conclusion being held at the cemetery. A pathetic feature was the short talk made by Mr. George W. Hill just before the party left the church, in which he spoke of the close relations that had existed between himself and his deceased brother, and exhorted the old men especially to be faithful. ---- C.A.
