J.R. HOOD FORMALLY CELEBRATED IN WEDOWEE THURSDAY A large assembly of students and citizens of Wedowee, with representatives from other sections of the county, assembled in the courthouse at Wedowee Thursday afternoon, May 8th, to participate in the celebration of the eightieth birthday celebration of Dr. Joseph R. Hood, one of the oldest and most prominent citizens of Randolph county. The occasion was as interesting as it was unique. It was an impressive celebration throughout and must have left a lasting impression for good upon the minds of all present, particularly the young. Dr. Hood, the honored patriarch, was attended upon this occasion by representatives of four generations of his decendants, making five generations of the Hood family represented. There were born to Dr. and Mrs. J.R. Hood, ten children, 46 grandchildren, 66 great grandchildren and 10 great great grandchildren, making 132 descendants in all. These are scattered from Pennsylvania to California. Mrs. Hood passed away nearly three years ago. Mayor S. Benbow presided at Thursday's exercises and former Sheriff Kent, with a choir and organist, furnished enjoyable music. Religious services were conducted by local pastors. Judge Heflin, Judge Blake and Senator Overton made appropriate remarks, reciting the virtues and labors of the guest of honor and drawing lessons therefrom. Chief interest centered however, in the address of Dr. Hood himself, and it is no disparagement of the younger orators who preceded him to say that the octogenarian surpassed them all in eloquence. Dr. Hood's address was historical, humorous, pathetic, optimistic. He laid down a number of sound principles and exhorted his hearers to live up to them. At the close of the speaker's remarks the chairman presented him with two large boquets of roses in behalf of representative ladies of Wedowee. The doctor responded in a happy manner. The exercises closed with a solo by Hood Messer and the benediction by Rev. J.C. Grant. Many friends then crowded around Dr. Hood to offer congratulations and good wishes. The following dates in Dr. Hood's career will be of interest: Born in Jasper County, Georgia, May 8, 1833 Joined the Methodist Church July 22, 1849 Preached his first sermon July 3, 1856 Commenced the practice of medicine in October 1855 Moved to Wedowee Feb. 1, 1869. -------- PROMINENT MINISTER DIES Rev. J.W. Newman, presiding elder of the Gadsden District, died in Gadsden Sunday night after along period of declining health. He was one of the most prominent members of the North Alabama Conference. He was a charter member of it and for the past 22 was its secretary. His services in every capacity were marked by faithfulness and efficiency. He was 67 years of age and was a Confederate veteran. Dr. Newman was a brother of Mrs. S.L. Dobbs, formerly of this place. ---- NAPOLEON News (by G.O. Hill, correspondent) May 3rd "Uncle" Fred Williams, a true and tried old Confederate veteran, has been prostrated two weeks and seems to get no better. He is seventy-three years old. I visited him yesterday. This dear old comrade is without any visible means of support. I know he is destitute. Now to cap this climax comes the report that the quarterly pensions for old soldiers for July is to be nixed. Can there be any blot on the state of Alabama more shameful than this? Is there a single state official, who will not move on straight up to the counter on time and draw his stipulated salary? If Aiken-Smith camp does not adopt some measure tending toward inquiry of the whys and wherefores of these shortages of old soldiers' dues, I will know the reason why when we meet again. Nothing is more rife and prominent than the blubber of a state candidate during his campaign, about the welfare and care of old Confederate veterans, but the meager allotment assigned to them contemplates whether-or-no all other needs of state funds have first been provided for; otherwise the poor old destitute soul, unable to work, may starve, only for the care of good neighbors. --- LOCAL News Mrs. Mamie Ellis of Birmingham has been spending a few days past with her sister Mrs. John Radney. --- Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Whereas the Supreme High Priest of the Universe has summoned companion Elbert Wat Hill to lay down the working tools of life and pass through the veil of time to assume his allotted place in the divine plan of eternity; and whereas the passing away of our companion should admonish us of our mortality, their virtues remind us of our high calling in this life and inspire us to higher thoughts and noble deeds; Therefore, be it resolved, 1st; that we bow in reverential resignation to the mandates of the great "I am" who designates our place of labor, commands its beginning, appoints its boundary and determines its ending in fulfillment of his own divine plans. 2nd; that we resolutely endeavor to imitate very good deed and fulfill every noble thought of our late companion, and encouraged by his devotion to the excellent tenents of Masonry, strive to fashion our lives in conformity to the precepts contained in the Book of Law, and departing, leave behind us the record of a well spent life, enriched by the practice of every Masonic virtue. 3rd; that we extend our sincere sympathy to his loved ones in their grief, and that we pray unto Jehovah that His divine presence may ever attend them and that his abundant grace may fill the place in their hearts and lives once occupied by our departed companion in that manner which He, in His omniscence, sees best suited to their future happiness and well being. Harry was made very sad on February 19, 1913 when the death angel visited them and took away Sallie May, the 15 year old daughter, from the unbroken family circle, and from the sorrow and troubles of this world, to rest in peace with Him forever. I am glad that I knew Sallie May. I was in school with her several years and since I have had the pleasure of teaching some of my school mates she was one among the number. Dear pupils and school mates, let me say to you that I know 'tis so dad for us to miss Sallie May from our little school band, and as we all have such a sweet remembrance of her. She was always such a good, kind and quiet girl. Oh, may you all live a pure, sweet, christian life. My daily prayer is, god forbid that I should ever be a stumbling block in the way of my pupils, but instead may my life be one shining light ever in your pathway, and when this life is ended may we all meet in heaven around the throne as an unbroken band to sing praises to Him. Dear father and mother, I know it was hard for you to give up Sallie May, but why should'st you weep. The Bible teaches us that she is only asleep. 'Tis a consolation to know she's at rest. O, how hard to give her up, but God knoweth best. True, she was taken in her youthful age, but God needs his angels his works to engage. Listen, can't you hear her call? Calling thee, mother, father, brothers, sisters, all. (writer's name not given). ---- NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, May 28, 1913 MRS. FRANK R. WOOD DEAD Tuesday, Mrs. Frank R. OTWELL INFLICTS DANGEROUS WOUND ON ALONZO NICHOLS News was received in Talladega Friday morning that J.W. Otwell had shot and dangerously wounded Alonzo Nichols of Lineville, at Malone, Ala. It is said that the shooting was in self defense and that Mr. Otwell was not arrested. The shooting was the result of an argument about some chickens that a fishing party from Ashland had cooked in Otwell's restaurant. It seems that Nichols carried the chickens to the restaurant and after they had been eaten by members of the party he demanded pay from Otwell for them, and upon the refusal of his demands, chased Otwell around with a knife and stick. Friends got Nichols away from the place but he returned and renewed the trouble. In the meantime, Otwell had secured his pistol and when he was again attacked, shot Nichols three times.
