Handley had been called to join his wife in Talladega by the illness and death of the latter's father, Mr. Ed Brown. This was an error due to Mr. Handley's misunderstanding the long distance phone message, which reported Mr. Brown as dying, though he later rallied. Mr. Handley returned in a few days but Mrs. Handley remained until Saturday, leaving her father somewhat improved, though not out of danger. We are pleased to make this correction. --- BRIT CARLISLE BROUGHT HOME FOR BURIAL IN HIS NATIVE SOIL AT WEDOWEE It was a sad day in our little town yesterday, having buried Brit Carlisle, one of the best boys Wedowee ever knew. He died in Arkansas City, Ark., on the 30th ult. Britt had a host of friends here which was evidenced by the largest procession ever witnessed by the writer, accompanying him to his last resting place. --- BABY LEFT ON DOORSTEPS Huntsville, Ala., Sept. 26th A tiny baby girl was left on the doorsteps at the home of Rev. and Mrs. Jas. T. Lane at Meridianville last night. The baby was clothed in a calico gown and was wrapped in a patchwork quilt, attempting to evidence the fact that the child was of destitute origin. A bottle of milk was in the basket and the child appeared to be about two weeks old. The preacher and his wife saw an automobile come from the direction of Huntsville, drive past the house and turn around and come toward the city. The Montgomery Advertiser. Redmond and little son Fred went to Shawmut Friday to visit the former's sister Mrs. C.A. Singletary. --- Mrs. V.C. O'Neal left Monday for her home in Huntsville after spending several months with her sister Mrs. C.C. O'Neal and her son C.E. O'Neal. --- Ed Kitchens of Texas, Ga., has accepted a position at W. Weinstein's. --- J.T. Shanks has returned from South Carolina where he has been at work for some months. --- Miss Tommie Wood went last Thursday to spend some time with her sister Mrs. Cowden at America, Alabama. --- On Sept. 27th, Miss Cora Bailey, daughter of Mr. L.L. Bailey, was married at Napoleon to Mr. Reginald Barrett, son of Mr. F.B. Barrett, thus uniting two of Randolph's best families. --- Mrs. McTyere of Oakbowery passed through Roanoke Saturday to visit the family of her nephew, J.P. Harris at Abanda. --- Jacob Ragland is convalescing after a twelve days illness of the fever. --- Mrs. J.J. Awtry is spending some time in Roanoke, the guest of her son Mr. W.P. Awtrey. The West Point News --- NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, October 14, 1914 FORMER ROANOKER DEAD Mr. Thomas J. Young, who operated a store at the oil mill here, was found dead in his store Sunday afternoon at 5 o'clock. The coroner summoned a jury Monday morning and after an investigation rendered the following verdict: "We the jury find that the deceased came to his death by an overdose of poisonous whiskey." Green are the proud parents of a fine boy. --- MISS MARY HODGES TO WED Invitations have been received in Roanoke from Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Calvert Ellis of Abbeville, S.C. to the wedding reception of their niece Miss Mary Gillam Hodges, who will wed Dr. William George Harper. The date given is Tuesday evening Oct. 27th from nine to eleven o'clock. Miss Hodges is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F.D. Hodges of this city but has made her home for some years in Abbeville, S.C. where she has been attending school. --- LOCAL News The remains of George Morris, a negro who formerly lived in Roanoke, were brought here Saturday from Birmingham where he was murdered by one of his race. --- It is good news to his many friends here in Alabama to know that the health of Mr. Bostine Tatum, who went to Clinton, Oklahoma, is improving and that he is highly pleased with his new home. The LaFayette Sun --- M.U. Mooty and family of LaGrange were the guests of A.A. Mooty and family on Sunday. --- Mrs. J.M. Early of London, Ky., accompanied her daughter Mrs. Charles Holder to this place last week, returning Friday, stopping at the Christian Convention in Atlanta. --- Claud L. Parker was in town Monday enroute to Indianapolis, Ind., where he goes for treatment. --- The eight months old son of Mr. and Mrs. Grover Swann died Friday in Lowell and was buried at Mt. Zion Saturday morning. A number of friends accompanied the distressed parents to the burial. --- Two children of Mrs. C.J. Faulk, now visiting the family of J.Z. Collier, were poisoned last Thursday by eating poke-berries, one of them becoming limp before medical aid arrived. --- WADLEY News Oscar Gilliland of Monroe, La., visited relatives near town last week. --- Mr. and Mrs. Ed Moore of Wedowee, Mrs. Carrie Smith and Mr. C.A. Cardwell of Bessemer were called here recently by the serious illness of their grandmother Mrs. Welch. --- NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, October 21, 1914 A CONFEDERATE SOLDIER DEAD The remains of Mr. Wm. B. Johnson, who died at the Confederate home at Mountain Creek, near Montgomery, were brought to Roanoke Monday and taken to the family burying ground for interment. He was a crippled veteran, whose home was in this county before going to the home near Montgomery. He was a member of the heroic 13th Alabama Regiment, C.S.A. --- LANE - KITCHENS NUPTIALS At 3:30 last Sunday afternoon, Rev. E.M. Glenn officiated in the wedding ceremony which connected two of the best known and most worthy families of this section, in the union of Howell Lane and Miss Hassie Kitchens. The nuptial rites were celebrated at the home of the latter's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry L. Kitchens, one mile south of town and were witnessed by a large company of relatives and friends, who extend best wishes to the excellent young couple. --- MR. T.D. TAYLOR DEAD Last Wednesday occurred the death of Mr. T.D. (Tib) Taylor at his home at Center Point. He was a well known citizen, having lived in this vicinity during most of the 62 years of his life. He had been ill six months. The interment was at Lebanon. --- LOCAL News Miss Marion Woodyard left today for a visit to her sister Mrs. Homer Wilson at Roanoke. The West Point News --- Mr. T.H. Elder of near Roanoke is visiting his daughters Mrs. J.W. Lane and Mrs. W.L. Osborn. The LaFayette Sun --- I.F. Parker is now serving as Marshall of Shawmut. --- Raymond Ozley, son of the Chief of Police, has the fever but is progressing satisfactorily at this writing. --- WADLEY News Oct. 19th The venerable mother of Dr. J.M. Wlech is thought to be dying at this writing. Mrs. Welch is one of the oldest persons in this community, having passed her 93rd birthday. --- Leonard Welch of Auburn and Dr. Ernest Welch and family of LaFayette are visiting Dr. J.M. Welch. --- NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, October 28, 1914 MRS. S.S. LOVVORN DEAD The Leader has received word of the death of Mrs. S.S. Lovvorn which occurred on Sand Mountain October 14th. She was a good christian woman and was prepared for her departure. Her home was formerly in this county where many relatives and friends are left to mourn her death. ---- MRS. HURST'S BIRTHDAY Last Wednesday was the birthday anniversary of Mrs. N.F. Hurst which marked the closing of her 79th year of life. Besides the family of her son Mr. P.A Hurst, with whom she makes her home, her daughter Mrs. Penn and a friend, Mrs. Wallace of Five Points, were present to enjoy the day together in an informal way. The evening preceding, quite a company of friends gathered at the home, to the surprise of the venerable mother, and spent the hour most pleasantly in social converse and song. Rev. E.M. Glenn read a scripture lesson, made a most fitting talk and offered prayer. At the close refreshments were served. Mrs. Hurst is a most interesting, sweet spirited character whose presence is a benediction to all who come within range of her modest little circle. Although totally blind she is remarkably cheerful and her life dispenses sunshine on others. May she live to celebrate many more birthday occasions with kindred and friends. ---- LIME News Oct. 26th Mrs. Hollis is seriously ill at this writing. --- Miss Lizzie Prather happened to the misfortune to get her collar bone broken last week. --- LOCAL News News was received in Roanoke last week of the death of T.W. Thompson in Atlanta. Last season he was in Roanoke but went to Lineville where he was taken ill and his health gradually declined. --- Sam Awbrey of Atlanta is visiting relatives here. --- E.W. Goodwin has accepted a position in a bottling plant in LaGrange and went to that place on Monday. --- Clarence Borders, son of Dixie Borders on Route 3, made 111 bushels of corn on a measured acre of land. Young Borders is 16 years of age and an all around practical farmer.
