Mrs. DeLorme was formerly Miss Annie Ray Arnett of Roanoke. --- Marion Shepard of Lime community, boarded the train in Roanoke this morning for Eric, Oklahoma where he will make headquarters for awhile. --- REV. C.J. BURDEN DIED THURSDAY IN LAGRANGE HOSPITAL AND WAS BURIED IN LAFAYETTE FRIDAY Rev. C.J. Burden, who had been at the Mission House here for the past two weeks on acocunt of a bad case of Bright's Disease, died Thursday morning about seven-thirty. Mr. Burden was a resident of Shawmut, Ala., and had charge of several Baptist churches near that place. At the time of his death he was sixty-three years old and well known throughout this section of Georgia and in western Alabama. Sympathy is extended to the bereaved relatives and friends. The body of the deceased was sent over the A.B. & A. railroad at 7:40 to LaFayette, Ala., where the funeral will take place Friday morning about eleven o'clock. Mr. Burden is survived by a wife and one daughter Mrs. J.D. Dunham of Shawmut, Ala., a son, Dr. C.S. Burden of Hogansville and one sister-in-law, Mrs. J.T. Holliday of LaGrange. The happy couple came to Roanoke last week and are at present at the home of young Mr. Taylor's father, Mr. J.O. Taylor. --- J.A. Boggs of Rock Mills is attending the Grand Lodge of Masons in Montgomery. --- W.W. Cofield visited his son H. Heflin, Judge of Probate ----- NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, December 9, 1914 TWO MEN HURT BY FALL A half dozen new cottages are in the process of building in the Lowell settlement. While at work on one of these houses Saturday, Messrs. Doc Brown and Joe Morton fell and were painfully injured. The former is seriously hurt. --- DEATH OF A CHILD Mary Lynn, the fifteen-months old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A.M. Clemmons died at an early hour Tuesday morning and was buried that afternoon at 2 o'clock, after funeral services conducted by Rev. J.W. Rucker at the residence. Many expressions of sympathy were given the parents in their great loss. --- ROCK MILLS News Dec. 8th Mr. and Mrs. Willie Middlebrooks of near Texas have come to make their home with Mr. and Mrs. F.W. Hill. --- W.T. Pittman and family have gone to south Georgia to make their home. --- LOCAL News Mrs. John G. Caden of Sheffield, formerly Miss Erin Blake, is the guest of her aunts, Mrs. G.H. Handley and Mrs. Elizabeth Driver. --- Mrs. H.T. Mathews returned Monday from a weeks stay with her brother J.R. Cumbee near Stroud. --- WANTED - - Good lady housekeeper to do general house work. Cumbee, Stroud, Ala. --- Mr. and Mrs. Ambrose have been called to Jacksonville, Fla., by the serious illness of their son Frank Ambrose. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, December 16, 1914 MR. J.J. HEARN PASSED AWAY LAST SATURDAY AT HIS HOME NEAR ROCK MILLS When Jason J. Hearn died Saturday morning at his home near Rock Mills, one of the oldest and most prominent citizens of the county passed to his reward. "Squire" Hearn had long been an exemplary citizen of Randolph coun y and many years ago, he represented this county in the legislature. The deceased was eighty years of age at the time of his death. He leaves a large number of descendants and other relatives besides a large number of friends to mourn his death. Mr. Hearn was an elder in the Primitive Baptist church. Interment was made at Salem church at one o'clock Sunday afternoon. The funeral services were conducted by Elders Parrish and Truett. ---- TO BE MARRIED The editor is in receipt of the following invitation: "Mr. and Mrs. Noah Clifford Henry request the honor of your presence at the marriage of their daughter Lettie to Mr. R.A. Holliday, Thursday afternoon, the twenty-fourth of December, 1914 at three o'clock at home, Roanoke, Ala." ---- LOCAL News The funeral of W.P. Trammell of Glenn, Ga., was held at that place last Friday. --- Mrs. D.T. Baird died the night of the 10th at her home on Route No. 1, just over the Chambers line. Many friends and relatives mourn the departure of this good lady. --- Mrs. J.W. Ray of Roanoke is in the city having come on a visit to her husband who is in a sanitorium here. Mr. Ray is a Central railway engineer in whose honor the "Johnnie Ray" train from Roanoke to Opelika was named. --- J.C. Joiner was in the Leader office Monday to have his paper changed to Warrior, Ala., having bought land near that place. He leaves today for his new home. --- Dr. Disharoon, Mr. Knight and Mrs. Danielly were called to Dadeville Saturday by the serious illness of the latter's father, Mr. Z.J. Wright, who suffered a stroke of paralysis Friday. Dr. Disharoon returned from the trip to Dadeville last night and reports his patient as doing reasonably well. Many friends here are wishing for his recovery. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, December 23, 1914 IN MEMORY OF MR. JASON J. HEARN (by the LaGrange Graphic) Mr. Jason J. Hearn, one of the most prominent citizens of Rock Mills, Ala., and who has a number of relatives in LaGrange, died at his home last Saturday, Dec. 12th and was buried the following day. Mr. Hearn was about 85 years old and had been in feeble health for a long time. He was a man of strong force of character, a loyal member of the old line Primitive Baptist church and a man who was always on the right side of every moral question. His community loses a splendid citizen and his church one of its strongest supporters. The LaGrange Graphic ---- Mrs. J.J. Hearn, whose husband died at Rock Mills last Saturday, has come to make her home with her brother, Rev. S.W. Pruett of Route 1. Anderson Bevis will give in marriage their daughter Annie Laurie, to Mr. Alfred Jefferson Awbrey, on Tuesday afternoon, the 29th of December at half after one o'clock, at the First Methodist Church, Roanoke, Ala. The honor of your presence is requested." ---- NEW POLICEMAN ON DUTY The council has employed J.N. Stephens, former Marshall of Wadley, to serve on the police force of Roanoke for the next two months. While he will have authority to make arrests anywhere in the city, Lowell will be his particular beat. Mr. Stephens has a record as a vigilant, fearless officer. ---- WEHADKEE News Dec. 21st Mr. Luther Shelnutt happened to a sad accident a few days ago. While finishing up the new house of C.H. Green, he fell from a scaffold and broke his left leg just below the knee. At last reports he was not doing well. --- LOCAL News The mother of A.M. Clemmons had the misfortune to fall Friday and break her hip. --- Mrs. E.H. Fowler is a holiday visitor to the family of her father Mr. A.T. Still. --- H.T. Mathews went Monday to visit his aged and feeble mother near Lineville. --- A telephone message to Gen. B.F. Weathers Tuesday at noon was to the effect that his brother Mr. J.D. Weathers was not expected to survive through the day. He has been in declining health for years. Gen. Weather left at 1:25 for Atlanta where his brother resides. --- At 1 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, the 22nd, Mr. Richard L. Edwards was married to Miss Cleo Ward at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. H.H. Ward. Rev. J.W. Rucker was the minister who officiated. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, December 30, 1914 MARRIED MONDAY NIGHT A marriage tinged with romance occurred in Roanoke at ten o'clock Monday night when Mr. G.R. Benefield and Miss Mae Baird drove to the home of Rev. E.M. Glenn, who, at their request, spoke the ceremony that made them bound in matrimony's golden bonds while the bride and groom remained seated in the buggy. Both are members of well known and esteemed families living west of town and have many friends to wish for them the best that life can hold. ---- J.D. WEATHERS LAID TO REST IN ROANOKE CEMETERY CHRISTMAS EVE Mr. J.D. Weathers died last Wednesday at his home in Atlanta after a period of declining health extending over several years. The remains were brought to Roanoke, attended by members of the bereaved family, on the middday train Christmas Eve, and after resting a short while in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Kyle, were carried to the Methodist church where befitting services were held, conducted by Dr. Glenn, assisted by Dr. Rucker. Afterward the interment was in the family lot in Cedarwood cemetery. Mr. Weathers was 56 years of age and was the youngest of a family of twelve children, nine sons and three daughters. Death has broken these ranks only one time before when Mrs. Robt. Presnall passed away a few years ago. The surviving sisters are Mrs. Pittman and Mrs. Gladney; the brothers are Messrs. B.F., Thomas, J.A., Simeon, William, J.L., A.J. and J.B. Weathers. A widow and one daughter Miss Lois also survive the deceased. Most of Mr. Weathers life was spent in this, his native county, where he had many friends. For several years he was in business in Roanoke. He was a member of the Methodist church. The news of his untimely end carries sorrow to many hearts in this and his adopted state. ---- DEATH OF DR. GOLDEN SADDENS MANY HEARTS Rock Mills, Dec. 29th On the morning of December the twenty-fourth, news reached us of the sudden death of Dr. E.Z. Golden at his home in Langdale. Dr. Golden has many friends here who mourn his loss and are filled with sympathy for the bereaved ones, to whom Christmastide is a time of sorrow. He was a son of Rev. E.F. Golden of Enterprise, Ala., former pastor of West Point Baptist church. Five years ago he was married to Miss Blanche Simms of this place. Dr. Golden's genial, happy disposition and christian character increased his usefulness and success and makes his loss greater to those who loved him. --- MARRIED IN LOUISIANA The Leader has received news of the marriage, near Homer, Louisiana, on Dec. 14th, of Mr. Sydney L. Orr to Miss Barnette Pixley, one of the most worthy young ladies of that section. Mr. Orr formerly lived in Randolph county and is a son of Mr. and Mrs. W.J. Orr. --- C.M. RADNEY AND MRS. EULA AWBREY MARRIED An unannounced marriage but one which nevertheless proved of much interest to their many friends throughout this section, was the union of Mr. Cass M. Radney and Mrs. Eula Orr Awbrey, which was witnessed at the home of the latter in this place by a few relatives and friends at 8 o'clock on the evening of Dec. 22nd. Rev. E.M. Glenn was the minister who officiated. The following morning Mr. and Mrs. Radney went to Atlanta to spend several days. Mr. Radney travels for a Virginia house and is a brother of Messrs. J.P. and H.B. Radney of this place. --- MANY MARRIAGES IN RANDOLPH CHRISTMAS Among the marriages occuring during the holidays which the writer has learned of, we note the following: At Lamar Christmas Eve night, Thos. E. Landers, son of Rev. T.H. Landers of this city, was married to MIss Myrtle McCarley. In Lowell Sunday night, S.T. Philpott and Miss Dustie Heard were married. The same day, Miss Mattie Radney of Lowell, the youngest daughter of Mrs. Dora Radney, and Rodger Carden of LaGrange, were married at Evansville, Georgia. This well known Georgia resort was also the scene Christmas Day of the marriage of Miss Eulala Tetner of Lowell to Marvin Brumbeloe of Rock Stand. To all, the Leader tenders best wishes. ---- LOCAL News Among the 68 prisoners pardoned just before Christmas by Governor O'Neal was Mark Smith, who killed Turner Lewis in Gadsden some months ago. The deceased was reared in Randolph county and was a nephew of S.D. Lewis. The killing aroused considerable indignation at the time. ---- C.F. Birdsong is spending the week with his daughter down in Butler County. --- J.D. Carroll and family of Atlanta spent Christmas in Roanoke. --- The youngest child of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Martin was seriously burned on Monday. --- Sam Hornsby was severely hurt Christmas Eve by falling from a horse that stepped in a hole on the Louina street bridge. --- Mrs. Martha Shelnutt died at 6 o'clock last Thursday morning at the home of her niece, Mrs. J.M. Johnson north of town. She was 82 years of age and had lived at the same place all of her life. The burial was at Lebanon on Christmas Day. --- H.C. Boazman phones the News that he is a happy grandfather, a son having arrived at the home of Mr. and Mrs. C.F. Wallace at their home in Roanoke last night. The Opelika News, the 26th. --- Mrs. Ann Green, an aged lady, died near New Hope on Thursday morning and was buried at High Pine on Christmas Day. --- Mr. Z.J. Wright continues critically ill in Dadeville. --- J.E. Coppadge of Meansville, Ga., is the guest of his daughter Mrs. W. Hossalton. --- Mr. J.W. Ray was brought home from Columbus where he is now very low at his home in this place. --- LIME LOCALS Dec. 28th Mrs. Ann Foster still continues very ill. --- ROCK MILLS News Dec. 29th Dr. and Mrs. Bonner returned from Langdale Friday where they went to attend the burial of their son-in-law Dr. E.Z. Golden, accompanied by E.J.
