Benefield here on Sunday. --- DICKERT News April 5th Mr. and Mrs. Rodgers Pool visited the latter's mother Mrs. Green at Abanda on Sunday. --- LOCAL News Walter and Ken Owens were called to Wedowee Sunday by the serious illness of their sister Mrs. W.B. Green. --- Jim Henry was caught in the net of the police on Saturday night on a charge of violating the prohibition law and fined $50, and sentenced to work 30 days for the town. --- Mrs. Blanche Lloyd Golden of Rock Mills has gone to LaFayette to undergo an operation for removal of the appendix. --- Mrs. H.T. Matthews is spending a few days with her sister Mrs. J.R. Cumbee near Stroud, the latter being very ill. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, April 14, 1915 CARD OF THANKS We wish to express through The Leader our sincere thanks to the many friends who so tenderly sympathized with us in the death of our dear beloved son and brother Marion Shephard. To all who sympathized and spoke words of condolence in this, the darkest, saddest experience of our lives, we offer thanks and pray that God's blessings may rest upon you all. We offer thanks also to those that met the remains at the train. Mr. and Mrs. A.F. Shephard, and Rhoda Shephard, Sister. --- VIOLATED PROHIBITION LAW C.N. Briskey was arrested by the police Friday night as he stepped from the Central train, for having in his possession more "fire water" than the law allows for personal consumption. He was placed on trial Saturday morning and plead guilty. Mayor Chewning fined him $100. and gave him a work sentence of six months. Later, however, upon representations made to the Mayor that the offender would give the town no further trouble, the fine was reduced to $50. and the work sentence suspended pending good behavior. --- ROCK MILLS News April 12th Mrs. J.M. Keeble is in Prattville visiting her sister Mrs. Emory Mapp. --- Mrs. Martha Burson left Saturday for a several weeks stay with her brother Jim Fincher near Omaha. She leaves a number of friends here who hope that the will return in much improved health. --- "Aunt" Nancy Bennett has been very ill for several days. --- LOCAL News News was received in the city Thursday morning of the death of C.S. Cornelius, solicitor of the Seventh Judicial Circuit, which occurred at two o'clock at his home at Ashland, after a short illness. Mr. Cornelius had been suffering from rheumatism which resulted in complications that caused his death. The Talladega Home --- Mrs. S.G. Carter was called to Carrollton on Sunday by the illness of her uncle, Dr. Strickland. --- HAPPY LAND News April 12th H.S. Brown of Chilton county is expected to arrive tonight to visit his sick sister Mrs. T.J. Roberts. --- Rev. F.M. Burditt is confined to his room with LaGrippe. --- Mr. Grady Mayo and Miss Nora Brown were united in marriage yesterday. --- BACON LEVEL News April 12th A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. D.B. Borders on the 9th inst. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, April 21, 1915 AWFUL TRAGEDY ON WEDNESDAY AT OMAHA COMMUNITY A shocking tragedy occurred at Omaha community in this county, last Wednesday, when Columbus Davis shot and wounded Miss Edith Green, his first cousin, and then sent a bullet crashing into his own brain, resulting in his death a few hours later. It is stated that Davis who was about 20 years of age, was in love with Miss Green, who is only 16 years of age and because of her refusal to marry him he grew desperate, doubtless becoming unbalanced at this point, with the terrible result above related. Both were attending school at Omaha and it was at noon recess when the shocking tragedy was enacted. The desperate young man shot three times at his victim, who was wounded in the shoulder the first shot and who then began to run. Fortunately she was only slightly injured and was able to return to school Monday morning. Columbus Davis was the son of Mr. J.H. Davis, while Miss Green is the eldest daughter of Mr. J.L. B. Green. Both families are prominent and highly respected. The many friends of both families sympathize with them greatly in this sad experience. ---- MRS. J.R. CUMBEE DIES Mrs. J.R. Cumbee died at her home near Stroud last Thursday morning and was buried at Bethel Friday morning, in the presence of a very large gathering of sorrowing friends and relatives, the services being conducted by Dr. W.C. Bledsoe. Mrs. Cumbee's illness extending over a period of two years, during which time every possible effort was made to save her from the dread enemy, tuberculosis. But she was ready to depart and her death was a triumph of christian faith. The deceased was a sister of Mrs. W.Z. East of this place. ---- MARRIAGE OF AN AGED COUPLE LAST FRIDAY An unusual marriage occasion was witnessed in Roanoke by a number of friends last Friday afternoon, when Mr. Charles R. Power and Mrs. Burgess, relict of the late Mr. George W. Burgess, were pronounced husband and wife by Justice L.E. Harris. The ceremony occurred at the home of the bride on Rock Mills street, where the couple now resides. The unusual feature of the marriage was the advanced ages of the contracting parties, it being stated that Mr. Power is in his 76th year and Mrs. Power in her 72nd. It was the latter's third matrimonial venture and the groom's second. The friends of these good people offer their best wishes. ---- NORTON - HARGREAVE Marriage The Leader is in receipt of the following invitation which will be of much interest in this section: "You are cordially invited to be present at the marriage of Florence Hargreave to Mr. James Norton on Friday, the 23rd of April, 1915 from one o'clock till eleven in the evening at The Delight Theatre, Roanoke, Ala. --- SURPRISE MARRIAGE YESTERDAY A surprise wedding took place at the beautiful home of Mr. T.C. Bingham Tuesday morning at 11:45 when Miss Anneola Bingham and Mr. C.M. Moseley were united in marriage, Rev. E.M. Glenn officiating. Miss Bingham was here on a visit to her brother and did not intend marrying until late in the summer. She is a talented elocutionist and musician and has had a studio of music in Montgomery for the past three years. Mr. Moseley is a rising young insurance man who has recently been transferred to Mississippi where he holds a responsible position. He left with his bride at noon for his future home. This marriage united two old Alabama families and the many friends of the couple regret that it will take them from their native state. After a short trip they will be at home to their friends in Greenville, Mississippi. --- LOCAL News A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Ben Chase last Friday. --- Mrs. S.M. Cole of Roanoke spent Friday and Saturday here with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. David Sherard. The LaFayette Sun --- Mr. Sam Abernathy returned last Monday from Blakely, Georgia where he had been visiting his son Mr. John D. Abernathy. The LaFayette Sun --- Miss Lee Davis, daughter of E.L. Davis, died Sunday night near Omaha community. --- Sheriff Robertson was in town Saturday, returning from Opelika with Cage Cavender, a white man charged with assault with a weapon. --- LUKE GATES SHOT BY WILL FERRELL SATURDAY NIGHT Saturday night about bed-time the air became electric with excitement in certain areas due to a shooting scrape at the A.B. & A. depot, followed by an unsuccessful attempt to catch the gunsman. Several negroes were implicated and it is said that family troubles were involved. The row finally reached the stage where William Ferrell got his consent to empty a five chamber revolver at short range upon Luke Gates. Four shots took effect but Gates was able to walk away with no apparent serious damage done to his person. Ferrell took his departure hastily and was pursued by several bystanders. He again resorted to his old trusty and shot back at his pursuers, making his escape for the time, at least. Monday morning, Brady Clemmons, a negro, was arraigned before the mayor on a charge of disorderly conduct growing out of the same occasion. He claims to be one of Uncle Sam's heroes and that he lost an eye in the service of the Navy at the Battle of Manilla Bay. But this didn't prevent him from receiving a fine of ten dollars. Ferrell decided to come in, so Tuesday morning he was tried before the Mayor and acquitted of the shooting on the plea of self defense. He was fined $10. for carrying a pistol. ---- BROUGHTON News April 19th Barrett Stewart has returned from a lengthy stay in the Lone Star State. --- LOWELL News We are sorry to note that the little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Gipson is very ill with typhoid fever. --- Charlie Butts has opened up a new barber shop in Lowell. --- DICKERT News April 19th We are glad to note that Mrs. Sam McCluney is out again after a short but serious illness. --- STANDING ROCK News April 19th Fred Turner was over from Atlanta Saturday and Sunday to visit his mother Mrs. D.E. Peavy. --- Mrs. Florence is over from Durand, visiting her daughter Mrs. E.P. Green. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, April 28, 1915 BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION At the home of Mr. Gus Lane, two miles south of town, the 57th birthday of this popular gentleman was celebrated Sunday, though the correct date was the 26th. Among those of his children present from a distance were W.S. Lane of Birmingham, Mr. and Mrs. C.A. Singletary and Mr. and Mrs. Pat McGarvin of Langdale. Mrs. B.F. Redmond of this city, is a daughter. Mr. Lane, we are pleased to note, is now improving in health after a long and serious illness. He is one of our best citizens. ---- WEHADKEE News April 26th A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. W.P. Norred one week ago. --- LOCAL News Judge A.J. Weathers was called to Albertville last Thursday to attend the funeral of his brother there. --- Mrs. Ida Wright Johnson of Tuskegee announces the engagement of her daughter Lucy Belle to Mr. Burrell Cook Jones of Roanoke, the wedding to be solemnized Wednesday May 26th at the First Baptist church in Tuskegee. --- We regret to note that Dr. S.J. Parker is very ill. His father-in-law Mr. White arrived from Ashland last night. --- T.L. Rushton, white, was tried before Mayor Chewning Thursday for violating the prohibition law. He was given the alternative of paying a fine of $50 or working 100 days. --- "Uncle" Noah Hornsby is spending a few days with relatives and his many friends in Roanoke. All of them sympathize with him in the loss of his good wife, whom he tenderly refers to as his "best friend." --- Hons. B.F. and A.J. Weathers returned Sunday from Marshall county where they attended the funeral of their brother Mr. Simeon Weathers. The latter had been living on Sand Mountain the past 35 years. --- Mrs. Jno. W. McAlpine of Demopolis is spending some time with her daughter Mrs. J.W. Rucker. --- Arch Preston of Clay county, himself a Confederate Veteran, attended the Soldier's Reunion in Roanoke on Monday. --- All Woodmen of the World of this section are invited to be at Mt. Zion on the second Sunday in May at 3:30 o'clock at which time the monument over the grave of W.E. Wood will be unveiled by Oak Grove Camp. All adjacent camps are urged to come and participate. --- DEATH OF MRS. N.D. HORNSBY The death of Mrs. N.D. Hornsby occurred very suddenly early Saturday morning at her home eight miles north of Roanoke. Although she had been almost an invalid for two years and delicate all her life, her death at the time was altogether unexpected. Mrs. Hornsby was a true christian woman and an old resident of the county. She was 76 years and 6 months of age. The remains were interred at Friendship on Sunday after services conducted by Rev. J.M. Yates. The deceased was a sister of Mr. W.M. Holder and the mother of Mrs. R.L.
