Teal Gravelle tealtree@comcast.net December 18, 2005, 1:53 pm The Roanoke Leader June 1915 NEWSPAPER ABSTRACTS FROM "THE ROANOKE LEADER", Roanoke, Randolph County, Alabama for JUNE 1915 NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, June 2, 1915 SHOOTING AFFAIR NEAR FREDONIA A terrible tragedy was enacted Saturday night near Fredonia in which two men lost their lives. According to reports reaching Roanoke, three white men, Bill Stewart, Euc Simonton and Jack Harris, living near Five Points, went to the home of a negro named Luke Smith and entered into conversation with him. Later, it is said, Stewart began firing into the negro's house and the negro returned the fire with a shotgun. Simonton was wounded and it seems that Harris, while trying to rescue him, was also shot. He died the following day. Simonton died Monday night. Stewart fled but we understand was later put under bond. The negro escaped. The whole affair is shocking and is greatly lamented by everyone. It is said that liquor purchased in Girard, in one of Alabama's local option counties, played its part in the death of these two young men, who had many friends. ---- LOCAL News J.M. Kidd was killed by lightning last Wednesday up near Wedowee. --- Mr. and Mrs. J.T. Beaird returned to their home in Roanoke Monday after a visit to their daughter Mrs. M.H. Jordan. It was their first visit to Alexander City and they were very much pleased with the town. The Alexander City Outlook ---- Presiding Elder Faust was called to Birmingham Thursday by the sudden death of Mrs. James H. McCoy, a most accomplished and useful lady. Her husband, Bishop McCoy, is one of the most beloved men in Alabama and has many personal friends among our readers who will sympathize with him in his grievous affliction. Four children are left motherless. --- Mr. M.P. Pittman went to Atlanta on Saturday to have his foot, which was wounded during the Civil War, examined under an X-Ray. --- W.A. Wilf returned Saturday from a visit to Houston and South Texas. He reports his people are doing finely out there and prospects are very encouraging. --- Mr. and Mrs. W.Y. Bass have taken for adoption a little two year old girl secured from the Georgia Children's Home Society of Atlanta and are very much interested in her already. --- WADLEY News May 31st Married, at the home of Mayor W.L. Roberts on May 26th, his daughter Miss Obera to Hiram Jason Green, Rev. J.H. Harris officiating. They left at 9:30 p.m. for their future home in Gay, Georgia where the groom has a lucrative position with the A.B. & A. Railraod. May God's richest blessings attend them. --- Mr. W.Z. Duffey, a Confederate Soldier, of Dadeville, Ala., 76 years old, died at the home of his son W.J. Duffey, three miles west of Wadley on the 24th of May and was buried in Wadley on the 25th. Rev. G.D. Hunt conducted the funeral services. --- Mrs. John Williams died at the home of her son W.H. Williams on May 28th and was laid to rest in Truett cemetery on the 29th. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, June 9, 1915 PERSONAL CARD OF THANKS In the affliction that came to us in the sudden death of our husband and father, Dr. P.G. Trent Sr., so many people showed us kindness, from first to last, that we cannot possibly express to each one in person our deep sense of appreciation for all their favors, so we employ this method of assuring all that their kind ministrations have touched our hearts. The courtesies shown by the physicians and by the board of stewards were beautiful, indeed. In grateful remembrance, we are, sincerely, Mrs. P.G. Trent, Ambrose Trent, Helen Trent. ---- LOCAL News "Uncle Mack" Mickle was in town last Wednesday for the first time in many weeks and was cordially greeted by his many friends. He told the newspaper man that he is intending to go to Texas, Georgia this week to spend some time with his son Dr. Mickle, and ordered The Leader sent to him, saying that he could not be without it. He has been a friend to the paper all its life. --- Invitations have been issued here from Dr. and Mrs. Wyatt Henderson Avery to be present at the marriage of their sister Miss Myrtle Avery to Rev. William Rupert Holder, the ceremony to occur at the former's home in Shelbyville, Tenn., Tuesday morning, June 15th at 8:45 o'clock. --- Two deaths this week made many sad hearts in Franklin. On Sunday, Mr. A.W. Powers Sr. died at Newnan and on Monday Dr. P.G. Trent passed away at Roanoke, Alabama. Mr. Powers was reared in this county and was one of its most useful citizens, while Dr. Trent was well and favorably known from professional practice in this county and visits to his son Dr. W.S. Trent. The Franklin News and Banner ---- Mr. A.E. Tucker continues quite feeble. His son D.B. Tucker is here from Youngstown, Ohio. --- Mrs. F.D. Hodges and daughters Rebecca and Rachel will leave tomorrow for Abbeville, S.C. to visit the former's daughter Mrs. Harper. --- A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Boulware in the Lane's Chapel community last Thursday and died Saturday, and was buried Sunday morning at the Chapel. Dr. Rucker conducted the services. --- A.M. Clemmons is quite sick at the camp on the Chattahootchee river where he recently went for recreation. --- Mr. and Mrs. Roy Hood arrived in Roanoke some days ago and will spend several weeks at the home of the former's father Mr. J.H. Hood. This estimable young couple were married last Thursday at Fosters, West Alabama. --- WEHADKEE News May 7th Mrs. J.H. Moses has been sick for some time. --- Mrs. Rush Gay underwent a serious operation at an infirmary in LaGrange last week. At last report she was doing nicely. --- STANDING ROCK News June 7th Paul Ward of LaFayette spent last week with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. A.S. Ward. --- Mr. Culpepper, our oldest citizen, died Friday from injuries received from a fall a few days ago. He expected to live to be 106 but had only reached his 98th mark. --- BACON LEVEL News June 7th Miss Julia Strickland of Standing Rock has been spending some days with her sister, Mrs. M.W. Lane. --- The W.O.W. decorated the grave of the late J.L. Bradshaw on Sunday. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, June 16, 1915 LOWELL News Mrs. T.J. Roberts, an elderly and respected lady, died Monday night at her home on Belcher street. The remains will be interred at Lane's Chapel at 11 o'clock Wednesday morning. --- Mrs. E.E. Chase and Mr. John Bishop of our community continue critically ill. --- Ryle Nobles, formerly of Riverside, died last night. --- WADLEY News June 14th Mr. H. Clay Fuller of Wadley recently went to Townley, Ala., where he was married to Miss Lillian Hendon, coming to Wadley Friday evening to the home of the groom's father. --- ANNOUCEMENT Mrs. C.L. Parker of Wedowee, Ala., announces the engagement of her daughter Eulette to Mr. T. Morris Francis of Union Springs, Ala. The wedding will take place at 8 o'clock on the evening of Wednesday, June 30th at the M.E. Church South, at Wedowee. --- LOCAL News R.W. Griffin and sister Miss Cora were called to Opelika last Wednesday to attend the funeral of their uncle, Mr. R.S. Floyd. --- Monroe Kittle, white, was nabbed by the police Saturday night and in his possession was found a big gun and several gallons of liquor. Monday in police court he was fined $50. for carrying the gun and $100. for violating the prohibition law. A work sentence of six months was also added for the last offense. --- The Leader has been handed a newspaper clippinig bearing the news of the death of Mrs. Claude Sitton at Toccoa, Ga. The deceased formerly lived in Roanoke with her parents as Miss Henrietta Vickery. Many friends remember her with affection and lament her untimely taking away. --- Mrs. W.N. Spinks received the shocking news by telegram Sunday night that Dr. Non Ward, husband of her sister, had been shot and killed in Samson, Geneva County. No particulars were given. Another sister, Mrs. Olin Ward, some time ago lost her husband in a like tragic manner. --- A child of one and a half years of age, of Mr. Tug Willingham, died Sunday night in the Corn House section. --- Mrs. Geo. H. Thornton and little daughter Elizabeth left Sunday for Cape Girardeau, Mo., where they will spend the remainder of the summer with relatives. --- Miss Ruth Zobel arrived here last week from a lengthy visit to her aunt in Ilinois, where she has been attending school. Her father, H.L. Zobel, met her here and accompanied her home to Wedowee. --- The remains of Mrs. James W. Richards, who died in Columbus, will be brought through Roanoke today for interment at 3 o'clock in the cemetery at New Hope, near Milltown. --- ROCK MILLS News June 16th Mr. Frank Whitaker is critically ill. --- Mr. Henry Laws has been confined to his bed for the past week. --- Mr. and Mrs. Johnson of LaFayette spent Saturday and Sunday with their daughter Mrs. Clarence Harper. --- Mrs. Mag Knight and children have moved here from LaGrange. -- Mrs. Elizabeth Mooney has returned from a visit to Denver, Ga. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, June 23, 1915 LOCAL News Mr.and Mrs. R.J. Miles of Columbiana came to Roanoke last week to attend the Carter - Belcher nuptial and were given a cordial greeting by their friends and neighbors of other years. --- J.B. Roberts, who spent his early life in this county but now is now a prosperous business man of Albertville, visited his brother W.Y. Roberts in this place last week. --- Mrs. Glenn received the unwelcome news last Thursday that her venerable mother Mrs. G.A. Arrington, while visiting her nieces in Selma, had fallen on the sidewalk at night, turning her ankle and breaking her right leg in two places. Many Roanoke friends of this good lady will hear of this with regret. --- Mrs. McAlpine of Mobile is the guest of her sister-in-law Mrs. Rucker. --- For some time Mrs. S.W. Lane has been in feeble health. Consequently she was taken to Atlanta Monday by Dr. Liles for treatment. --- Mrs. L.C. Hardy, with her two daughters, Miss Lena and Emma, have arrived in Ashland from Eldorado, Arkansas and are at the home of Mrs. R.G. Rowland, the daughter of Mrs. Hardy. We are pleased to learn that these good ladies will make Clay county their future home, as it is announced that the two daughters, who are teachers of excellent reputation, have accepted positions in the school at Lineville for next year. The Ashland Progress --- N.S. Daugherty was called Saturday to Spartanburg, S.C. to attend the funeral of his father. --- Mr. R.L. Simms and Miss Lena Brown repaired Sunday to Evansville, Ga., where they were united in marriage in the presence of a few friends. We wish for this young couple much happiness. --- John Tom Pool is ill with the fever at his home near Dickert. --- Lawton Moran of Linton, Ga., is visiting his aunts, Mrs. J.A. Wilson and Mrs. J.A. Carlisle. --- Robt. Allen Jr. broke his arm last week cranking an automobile. --- Mrs. J.A. Carlisle returned yesterday from Montecello, Ga., where she was called Saturday by the death of her brother Mr. Pound. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, June 30, 1915 ROCK MILLS News June 28th Jim Smith and wife attended the funeral of their grandmother Mrs. Blackwelder, which was conducted at Paran church Monday. The deceased died in Bowdon and was 88 years old. --- Ed Oswalts received a message Friday that his father who resided in Columbia, S.C. had been killed. --- DR. J.L. TAYLOR SERIOUSLY HURT IN AUTOMOBILE ACCIDENT Dr. John L. Taylor happened to a very serious accident on Sunday. While returning from sunday school he was running his car at a fast rate to get out of a rain and lost control of the machine. The car left the road a short distance, one wheel was smashed and the vehicle turned over on him. His collar bone and three ribs were broken and his body badly bruised. Had it not been for some negroes who went to his assistance he would probably have been mashed to death. His four little children who were with him were only slightly injured. The doctor is doing as well as could be expected, at this writing. --- WEHADKEE News June 28th Mrs. F.B. Barrett is convalescing after suffering a severe attack of rheumatism. --- LOWEL News J.C. McClendon and Miss Adelle Campbell went to Evansville, Ga., Sunday morning and were married. --- LOCAL News Rev. Fred B. Faust of New Mexico is spending some ten days with his father Rev. W.E. Faust and family. --- Mrs. M.E. Jeffers and Jack Jeffers have gone to Perkins Junction, Ga. --- Mrs. Robt. Priddy and little daughter of LaGrange are spending the week with the former's sister, Mrs. G.B. Walker. --- Mrs. G.P. Trammell and daughter Miss Lorene of Roanoke, Ala., are spending the week with Mr. E.M. Trammell and family.
