Teal Gravelle tealtree@comcast.net December 18, 2005, 7:44 pm The Roanoke Leader July 1915 NEWSPAPER ABSTRACTS FROM "THE ROANOKE LEADER", Roanoke, Randolph County, Alabama for JULY 1915 NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, July 7, 1915 TRIPLE MURDER CAME TO LIGHT WHEN BODIES OF THREE MEN FOUND IN THE RIVER - - West Point, Ga., July 2nd A fourth body, bearing marks of violence was found late yesterday in the Chattahoochee River near here. While the body has not been fully identified, it is believed to be that of the father of Mack and Epps Melton, brothers, of Harris County, Georgia whose bodies, with that of J.L. Leak, of Riverview, Ala., have been taken from the river during the past 24 hours. The father had been missing since last Saturday, the date on which the other three disappeared. The bodies of each of the men taken from the river reveal gunshot wounds in the head and other mutilation, in addition to the evidence that the perpetrators of the crime attempted to sink the bodies to the bottom of the river with stones. How three such men could have been overcome and murdered as they were has caused much speculation and has finally brought up the story of a long feud in Harris County. It will be remembered that it was this family of Meltons who were connected with the killing of Mans Teal at a grist mill, about a year ago, and that J. Epps Melton was tried for the murder, finally being acquitted. It will be remembered that two negroes figured in the trial of Melton for the killing of Teal, and the coroner states that the body which was taken out of the river over a week ago was that of a negro, and it is believed the one that was connected with the trial, as he is missing. The second negro in the case is also missing. The Opelika News Note from the Editor of the Leader: The Melton brothers are related to the family of Mr. Epps Tucker. Epps Melton worked in the cotton mills here a good many years ago. ---- ROCK MILLS News July 5th Last Tuesday afternoon, Mrs. Dr. Bonner fell from an automobile while riding on the running board.
