The peace of the Sabbath morn of Nov. 14th was harshly broken at 10 o'clock when four shots rang out in rapid succession in the home of John M. Tucker, at the intersection of Wedowee and Franklin streets, this city. Near neighbors rushed in and found Bennett Coleman lying on the floor of the dining room, dying as a result of three bullet wounds in his body, and Mr. Tucker holding a smoking revolver. He had previously met Mr. Coleman in town and shortly afterwards returned home by a rear route, with the result as above stated. A coroner's jury was organized with J.T.B. Awbrey as foreman, which returned a verdict to the effect that Coleman had met death at the hands of Tucker. In the afternoon a court was organized in Wood's Hall with Justices Cofield and Harris sitting. After some discussion by attorneys it was agreed that the preliminary trial would be held Wednesday morning, Nov. 17th. A bond of $500. was set by the court which was quickly made. It is understaood that the defendant's plea will be that the deceased had violated the sanctity of the former's home. It is also understood that this is denied from certain sources. Bennett Coleman was about 35 years of age and was the son and main support of Major and Mrs. J.T. Coleman. He had insurance on his life for $1000. The funeral services were conducted from the home at 2:30 Monday afternoon by Rev. E.M. Glenn and interment was in Cedarwood.
