Ussery underwent an operation last week. We are sorry to learn she is not doing as well as expected. --- WEDOWEE News Jan. 31st Mr. Humphrey D. Landers, a highly respected citizen of North Randolph, was buried at Corinth Sunday. The funeral was attended by several of his friends from Wedowee. --- Mrs. Josie Stewart who has been seriously ill, is recovering. --- Hood Messer, who was recently adjusted insane, was sent to Tuscaloosa today in care of Deputy Ballard. --- JOHN ROBERT ABERNATHY The little two year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Abernathy, John Robert Abernathy, died Saturday night of acute indigestion. The funeral services were conducted at the home Sunday afternoon by Revs. E.M. Glenn and C.B. Holder. In the sudden taking away of this dear little boy, upon whom centered so many hopes and so many loves, the parents are sorely bereaved. They have the cordial sympathy of all their friends. --- LOCAL News J.E. Cofield, a Confederate Veteran, is spending a few days with R.O. Cofield. --- Mr. W.F. Abernathy of Buffalo and City Clerk Abernathy of LaFayette were called here Sunday to attend the funeral of John Robert Abernathy. --- Rev. W.E. Faust is visiting his aged mother in Shelby county this week. --- Mr. and Mrs. Hurley left Saturday for their home in the West, after spending several weeks with the latter's parents, Mr. and Mrs. R.P. Phelps. Mrs. Hurley's sister Mrs. L.G. Staples and children accompanied them and will spend a month or so visiting in Oklahoma and Texas. --- ROCK MILLS News Jan. 31st Mrs. Emma Phillips went over to LaGrange Saturday to visit her son-in-law Posie Bennett who has sufferend a partial stroke of paralysis. --- Miss Rose Kilgore who has been working in West Point for the past year, was recently married to W.H. Brittain of LaGrange. --- Mrs. S.F. Walker is confined to her bed from a severe fall she received last week. --- Miss Lola Britt went Saturday to visit her sister Mrs. Belle Colquitt of Shawmut. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, February 9, 1916 AN AGED MOTHER ENTERS INTO REST; Mrs. Sarah E. Nichols Died Monday at the Home of her Son in This City. When death entered the portals of the home of Mr. F.P. Nichols in the early hours of Monday morning and bore to rest his venerable mother, Mrs. Sarah E. Nichols, many hearts that had felt in hours of sorrow the ministrations of the son, throbbed in sympathy with his. Soon the home was filled with friends, eager to render any service possible. When the funeral hour arrived, eleven o'clock Tuesday morning, the Baptist church was filled with friends. The high school teachers and pupils attended in a body. The floral offerings were numerous and most beautiful. The old songs used were effective. Rev. J.W. Rucker was in charge of the service and was assisted by Rev. E.M. Glenn, this city and Revs. W.C. Bledsoe and H.R. Arnold of LaFayette. The message brought in Scripture readings, in eulogy and prayer were full of comfort and inspiration. At the conclusion the remains were laid to rest in Cedarwood. Mrs. Nichols was almost four score years of age. She was the wife of the late Mr. W.B. Nichols Sr. and is survived by seven children. All were present at the funeral save one daughter in Oklahoma. Besides the relatives many friends came from LaFayette and other points to pay their tribute of respect. Mrs. Nichols served well her day. May her rest be sweet! ---- MRS. M.A. DUDLEY GONE TO HER REWARD; Old Resident of Roanoke Died Last Friday at her Home in Lowell. After a long illness, Mrs. M.A. Dudley died at her home in Lowell, last Friday. Every attention was given her and a trained nurse attended her, but the burden of age and infirmities was too much to be longer borne. Sunday afternoon the funeral services of this good woman were held in the auditorium in Lowell which was filled to overflowing. Mrs. Dudley had long been a member of the Methodist church. The last rites were performed, according to the Methodist ritual, by Revs. C.C. O'Neal and E.M. Glenn. The remains were laid to rest in the public cemetery. Mrs. Dudley came to Roanoke when the town began to grow. Her husband was the first section foreman on the Central railroad. Seven grown children survive her. ---- STANDING ROCK News Feb. 7th Mrs. W.W. Gay is critically ill. --- Mrs. T.W. Gheesling has been sick for the past week. --- Mr. and Mrs. Ross Lane have been visiting the latter's sister Mrs. J.F. Russell the past week. --- Mrs. J.J. Slappey visited her uncle, Mr. C.D. Strickland here on Sunday. --- CORBIN News Feb. 7th L.M. Wilson is ill with pneumonia. --- Grandma Pittman died yesterday at the home of Mr. Nat Shelnutt. --- "Uncle" Pat Bailey is still critically ill. --- HAPPY LAND News Feb. 5th Mrs. Sidney Owens who has been sick so long continues to grow weaker. --- "Grandma" Hodge is probably one of the best preserved ladies of her years in Alabama. Though above ninety, she sews without glasses, and walks to the house of some of her neighbors. --- Jim Simms is on the road selling dry goods and notions, his health being too impaired to do much work on the farm. --- F.M. Burditt who has been confined to his home by an aggravating cough for several weeks was able to attend church last Sunday. --- LOCAL News Ben H. Walker of LaGrange was here Sunday in attendance upon his wife who is ill at the home of her father J.W. Grady. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, February 16, 1916 TWO AGED PEOPLE DIE One week ago occurred the death of Mrs. Bud Hendon, after a long illness, at her home on Roanoke Route 2. Many relatives and friends mourn the loss of this good wife and mother. Sunday night, at the home of his daughter near Abanda occurred the sudden death of Mr. John Thomason, widely known as "Cousin John." He was a Confederate Veteran and had many friends throughout the county. The interment was at Concord Tuesday. ---- STANDING ROCK Feb. 14th Rev. J.M. Edwards has returned to Fredonia on account of the serious illness of his daughter Mrs. Ben James. --- LOCAL News Gordon Hornsby, wife and child of Cleveland, Texas are spending several weeks in Roanoke. --- Geo. W. Bradley was called to West Point on Sunday to attend the burial of his mother, Mrs. J.W. Bradley, who had been ill for a long while. Her friends in Roanoke will regret to learn of her death. --- Harry Bandy, wife and child will leave Sunday to make their home at Quitman, Ga., where Mr. Bandy has a good position offered him. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, February 23, 1916 MRS. M.V. CORLEY DEAD After a long illness, Mrs. M.V. Corley, a humble christian lady, died early Monday morning at her home on Wedowee street. She was 72 years of age and a member of the Baptist church. The interment will be at 10 o'clock this morning, conducted by Rev. J.W. Rucker. ---- STANDING ROCK News Roy Hines came home from Auburn Friday night to spend the weekend with home folks and was taken quite sick Saturday morning. --- Mrs. Mary Amons and her son John of Atlanta spent the week with the former's sister Mrs. G.P. Sutherlin. --- WADLEY News Feb. 21st Mr. Joseph Gatlin, a Confederate soldier and an excellent citizen, died Monday morning and will be buried at Forrester's Chapel on Tuesday. --- Mr. J. Denson Liles has moved from Big Springs, Ga., to Cowan, Tennessee. --- UNEXPECTED MARRIAGE At the home of her mother in Lowell, Miss Bessie Benefield was married last Friday to Mr. R. Wm. Stone. Rev. A.S. Brannan officiated. The groom is reading law under Attorney W.L. Wilson. --- ROCK MILLS News Feb. 21st Mrs. J.S. Yates returned Sunday from a visit to her brother Charlie Anderson near West Point. --- LOCAL News J.B. Hyde, the white man who killed Brown Mooty in LaGrange last December, has been sentenced to serve ten years in the penitentiary. --- Mrs. Franklin South was in town Saturday, returning to Cullman county, after a visit to her daughter Mrs. T.G. Bailey near Frolona, Ga., where a new son has just taken up his abode. --- J.Z.
