HAYES IS DEAD Mrs. W.A. Hayes, who formerly lived in Rock Mills, died recently in Ashland. Saturday, the remains were brought through Roanoke accompanied by relatives and Rev. Thad L. McDonald, pastor of the deceased, and taken to Cusseta for interment. At this point the party was joined by Mr. and Misses Griffin, cousins of Mrs. Hayes and Mr. J.G. Wheeler. The interment occurred Sunday. ---- STANDING ROCK News April 3rd Mr. J.T. Terry came up from Langdale Sunday to spend the day with his daughter Mrs. J.E. Gay. --- Mrs. D.E. Peavy has gone to Atlanta to visit her son Fred Turner and his wife and to get acquainted with her little grandson, Fred Jr. --- Mr. Lon Edwards is out from Texas, visiting his father Rev. J.M. Edwards. --- SEVERAL DEATHS HAVE OCCURRED IN THIS SECTION DURING THE PAST FEW DAYS There has been an unusual harvest of death among people of this section during the past several days, some of them well known citizens. Saturday was reported the death of Mr. S.J. Paxton at his home three miles west of town. At Lineville Monday occurred the death of Dr. W.H. Hudson, one of the most noted surgeons in east Alabama. The interment was in Wadley yesterday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Schuessler and Mrs. Wade Carlisle attended from this place. Monday night in Wedowee, Mr. James J. Huckeba died. He was one of the best known and most popular men in the county. He was a member of the Methodist church and the Knights of Pythias. He leaves a wife and eight children. The funeral will occur in Wedowee at two o'clock today. Monday night also occurred the death near Blake of "Uncle Billie" Hodges, who was about eighty years of age. At New Hope yesterday, Oma Lee Green, aged 13 years died. The interment was at New Hope near Milltown, at 11 o'clock today. The deceased was a daughter of W.M. Green. ---- CARD OF THANKS We wish to express our gratitude to all who helped us in our bereavement, especially the physicians and those who so faithfully helped to nurse our husband and father. McCleskey of LaFayette and the latter's mother Mrs. Housman of Tuscaloosa were visitors to Roanoke last Thursday. --- Miss Maude Bass is the guest of her sister Mrs. W.C. Coleman. --- Mrs. S.C. Fausett was called to Decatur several days ago by the death of her sister's husband, Mr. S.S. Broadus. He was one of the most prominent bankers of North Alabama and was a son of the late Dr. John A. Broadus. --- Mrs. A.J. Noles arrived yesterday from Atlanta to attend the funeral of her brother-in-law, J.J. Huckeba. --- News was received yesterday by wire of the death of the venerable mother of F.D. Hodges in Abbeville, S.C. Mr. Hodges was out on the road but was notified and left at once for the funeral. --- Mary Munn Stevenson arrived at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Olin H. Stevenson, at an early hour Monday morning and was given a hearty, grateful welcome. The given names were bestowed in honor of the little one's grandmothers. Her parents trust she may prove a blessing to the race as these two good women have. --- Twin girls were born to Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Taylor at their home on Wedowee street a few days ago. --- NEWSPAPER issue of Wednesday, April 12, 1916 TWO AGED PEOPLE DIE Mrs. William Traylor, an aged widow lady, died in Wedowee last Friday and was buried there Saturday, the services being conducted by Rev. W.P. Cofield of LaGrange. Near Lamar Saturday night occurred the death of Mr. John F. Combs, at the age of 81. He was a Confederate Veteran and a respected citizen. ---- STANDING ROCK News April 10th Mrs. L. Leftwich is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.E. Henderson. --- Mrs. Will Hayes of LaGrange spent the weekend here with her mother Mrs. J.P. Sutherlin who continues in feeble health. --- MARRIED IN LAGRANGE Joseph M. Grafton of this place and Miss Mabel Arnett of Dickert, went to LaGrange Monday, accompanied by a few friends and Rev. J.W. Rucker, where they were married, Rev. Rucker performing the ceremony. After a brief trip Mr. and Mrs. Grafton returned to Roanoke and are at home at the residence of Mrs. Embrey. The Leader joins their friends in wishing them a full measure of happiness. --- CARD OF THANKS We cannot command language that will express in full our appreciation for the many expressions of sympathy and great kindness shown us by our neighbors and friends in our very great bereavement, caused by the death of our dear husband and father. We pray that the Lord will richly reward every one of those who have been so kind to us, in our almost unbearable affliction. Mrs. Mary W. East and children. --- MISS TAYLOR MARRIED The Leader has received news of the marriage March 30th of Miss Verdie Taylor of this county, sister of Mrs. W.A. Arnold of this city. She was teaching at Ward in West Alabama and was married to Mr. Herbert Hardin, a well known citizen of that section. After an extended wedding tour they located at Halsell in Sumpter County. This will be interesting news to the bride's numerous friends in this, her native county. ---- LOCAL News Mr. Fred Wagoner of Atlanta, the man who built the old Handley brick store building here 36 years ago, was in Roanoke Thursday night. He remembered many of Roanoke's older citizens but the town had grown entirely out of his knowledge. --- The Mellow Valley Baptist church, located ten miles south of Lineville, was struck by lightning Sunday morning about 11 o'clock. The church edifice was struck on the north side near the pulpit, just as the pastor, Rev. W.J. Layton of Milltown, had read his text and had started his sermon. Mrs. Bailey suffered a broken limb and several cuts and bruises as a result of the stroke of lightning and several other members and worshippers were burned, shocked and rendered unconscious. The Lineville Headlight ---- Mrs. Gusta Ward and Mrs. Kittle Lee Ward were guests last week of their sister Mrs. Spinks. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, April 19, 1916 BACON LEVEL News April 17th Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Cooper of Texas, Ga., were guests of Mrs. B.D. Borders recently. --- DIED OF PNEUMONIA Mrs. Howell Breed, aged 19 years, died in Lowell of pneumonia Sunday night after a short illness, leaving a husband and a child four months of age. The interment was at Concord on Tuesday. --- AN AGED LADY DEAD Miss Fannie Disharoon died at 2 o'clock this morning at the home of her cousin Dr. H.B. Disharoon, this city. She had been in declining health for a long while. The deceased was a member of the Baptist church, was 67 years of age and had given much time to the afflicted and unfortunate. The funeral services will be conducted at the residence at 4 o'clock this afternoon, by Revs. A.S. Brannah and E.M. Glenn. ---- MR. POLK BURSON DEAD The remains of Mr. Polk Burson will be brought to Roanoke on the noon train today from LaGrange and conveyed to Big Springs, where the interment will be after funeral services conducted at 4 o'clock this afternoon by Rev. W.J. Layton. Mr. Burson was for a long time a well known citizen of this county and was about 65 years of age. ---- LOCAL News H.C. Manley suffered a slight paralysis in his right side Sunday but is improving at this writing. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, April 26, 1916 BOULWARE - GAY MARRIAGE Mrs. Missouri Boulware announces the marriage of her daughter Lenda Catherine to Dr. Andrew Jackson Gay on Tuesday, May 23rd, First Baptist Church, Roanoke, Ala. --- WADLEY News April 24th Married on April 23rd, Mr. John W. Ingram of Delta, Ala., to Miss Lenora Clegg, at the home of the bride's father Rev. K.L. Clegg, Rev. J.H. Harris officiating. --- Mrs. Sarah Ponder, consort of E.W. Ponder, deceased, has just celebrated her 91st birthday. This good woman furnished two sons to the Confederacy. As the soldier's reunion will meet at Roanoke on Wednesday, I would like to inquire of your readers to know if there is another mother living in this county that had a son in the war of the states. ---- STANDING ROCK News April 24th Mrs. Homer Farrar is seriously ill. --- Mrs. M.A. Snuggs is visiting her daughter Mrs. J.W. Bates at Langdale. --- RESOLUTIONS ON THE DEATH OF JAS. H.B. EAST, by the Woodmen of the World Spring W.O.W. Camp No. 624 We the committee on resolutions make the following report: It is with sad hearts that we sorrowfully announce to you that on the 29th of March 1916, the grim monster death, for the first time found entrance through our inner door and bore the gentle spirit of our beloved Sovereign, Jas. H.B. East, to the great beyond, where "there will be no more good byes." A man with a master mind, kind, loving and a loveable disposition, a most loyal friend and a brave, true and honorable citizen and Sovereign, with painful sense of personal loss we deplore his going away; yet better still, we know that he rests well in the better land. Therefore, be it resolved, First; while we bow in humble submission to the Will of the Great Sovereign of the Universe, yet we mourn the loss of him who has been taken from us. Second; that in the death of our dearly beloved Sovereign, the camp has lost a true and honored member. Third; that our county and state has lost a valuable citizen, the wife a devoted husband and the children a precious father. Fourth; that we extend to the bereaved family and relatives of the deceased in their sore affliction our heartfelt sympathy and commend them to God in constant prayer. Fifth; that these resolutions be spread upon the minutes of the camp and that a copy be sent the Roanoke Leader for publication, and one be sent the bereaved family. T.M. Hendon I.W. Lewis J.B. Mitchell, wife and sister-in-law Miss Ada Steed, left some days ago for their future home in Richmond, Va., stopping to visit relatives enroute. --- Mr. and Mrs. F.A. Neal returned Monday from Alexander City where they were called by the serious illness of Mrs. T.B. Turner. --- Mrs. G.C. Logan is spending some time with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Burden. --- The two year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Lon Truett died at Milltown Saturday afternoon and was buried at Bethel on Sunday. --- Mrs. W.M. Lackey was called to Roanoke Wednesday to attend the funeral of her cousin Miss Fannie Disharoon.
