Rucker. --- MR. A.J. BRUMMIT IS DEAD The Leader has received news of the recent death of Mr. A.J. Brummit, which occurred at his home in Marion, Ala. The interment was in that city. Mr. Brummit was sick four months but endured his long suffering patiently. He is survived by a wife and four daughters, Misses Annie Lee, Flora, Willie and Mildred Brummit. Mr. Brummit was a pioneer furniture merchant of Roanoke. He had a wide circle of friends here where he was married to Miss Montana Liles some twenty years ago. The friends of both will learn with regret of Mr. Brummit's death. ---- WADLEY News June 6th Zadock Whitlock, a Confederate veteran and a member of the Primitive Baptist church, died at the home of his daughter Mrs. J.W. Green at Abanda yesterday. He will be buried at Concord today. --- LOWELL News L.W. Griffin, son of L.A. Griffin, who recently moved over on J.C. Hornsby's place to farm, died Saturday morning after an illness of pneumonia. The interment was in the public cemetery in this place at noon Sunday, after services conducted by Rev. C.C. O'Neal. The deceased leaves a wife and five children, the oldest being only nine years of age. --- WEDOWEE News June 7th County court was in session Monday and disposed of several cases. In the habeas corpus case of the State vs. Enoch Butler, the defendant was admitted to bond of $2000. Charge was criminal assault. --- BACON LEVEL News June 5th Mr. and Mrs. Henry Mealor of LaGrange were here the latter part of the week on a visit to the latter's mother Mrs. Alice Bishop. Mr. and Mrs. Mealor were married last Saturday afternoon in LaGrange. --- Mrs. B.M. Ware of Palmetto, Ga., spent last week with her sister Mrs. E.L. Harris. --- While in this county last week, A.J. Stewart was legally made administrator of the estate of his father, the late Mr. W.H. Stewart. --- LOCAL News The negro Baptists of Roanoke held a grand rally Sunday for the purpose of securing funds with which to build a new brick church. $203. was raised. --- Mr. and Mrs. A.M. Awbrey are visiting their daughter Mrs. Marion Bingham in Huntsville. --- Mrs. H.E. Berkstresser and little daughters of Dadeville are expected to arrive this week to visit the former's sister Mrs. L.M. Stevenson. --- A camping party composed of the families of H.G. Ruggles and W.S. Green left Roanoke Monday morning to spend some time on the river five miles beyond Wedowee. They went in covered wagons which will be used as sleeping berths. --- From this place last Thursday the following went to Dadeville to attend the funeral of Mr. Z.J. Wright: Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Hardy of Alexander City came last Saturday to make their home with Mr. and Mrs. F.A.Neal. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, June 14, 1916 ROCK MILLS News June 12th Mrs. Lena Anderson of near West Point spent the past week with Mr. and Mrs. J.S. Yates. --- Mrs. Albert Fowler and children are on a two weeks stay with Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Vineyard. --- Lon Bailey and Miss Nails were married Saturday. The bride is thirteen years of age. --- Charlie Prescott and Burns Parker of Wedowee are preparing to leave for Fargo, Oklahoma where they will spend about two months in the wheat fields of the West. --- WEHADKEE News June 10th Mr. and Mrs. L.H. Benefield are the parents of a new boy. --- BACON LEVEL News June 12th Mrs. J.T. Langford and sister Miss Annie Borders of Birmingham are here visiting their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sam E. Borders. --- George Borders and brother-in-law Mr. Langford were called here Friday from Birmingham by the illness of the latter's wife who is now improving. --- LOCAL News Mrs. D.J. Padgett has been quite ill but is improving. --- Rev. and Mrs. S.W. Fowler of Erwin, Tenn., will arrive today to be guests for several days in the home of Mrs. S.C. Pittman. It was in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fowler that Rev. Belt White was taken so seriously ill some months ago and they will be most cordially received in this place. --- Mr. and Mrs. W.H. McDonald and litle son W.H. Jr., with the two motherless children of Mr. Lee Ward, arrived last week from Cave Springs, Ga., to spend some time with relatives. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, June 21, 1916 CARD OF APPRECIATION Our vocabulary fails to furnish us with words that will express our very great appreciation for the loving kindness shown us in our recent sore bereavement caused by the sickness and death of our dear mother and grandmother. We pray that our Heavenly Father will richly reward every one who showed us such great consideration. We hope to make our lives demonstrate our heartfelt appreciation of every kindness shown us. C.C. Huey and family. ---- BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION The Leader has received a detailed account of a surprise dinner given June 8th in honor of Mrs. Mary Culpepper in beat 8, upon the occasion of her 74th birthday anniversary. A large number of neighbors gathered and prepared dinner. The occasion was a most pleasant one. Such occasions are commendable. --- ROCK MILLS News June 19th Last Thursday morning our community was shocked to hear the sad news that Mr. M.L. Britt was dead, he having been found dead in bed. His death came unexpectedly for he was enjoying very good health, ate a hearty supper and was unusually jovial. Mr. Britt was 53 years of age, was a kind father, good neighbor and was loved and respected by all who knew him. We realize that our town has lost one among its best citizens. The funeral was conducted at the Methodist church, where he was a member, by Rev. E.M. Glenn, after which the remains were followed by a large concourse of people to the new cemetery. The deceased leaves a wife, five children and one little grandson. To each of them we extend a sympathizing hand. Mrs. Phronia Smith, Mrs. Belle Colquitt, Mrs. Carl McDaniel and Miss Ruby Pittman came over from LaGrange to attend the funeral of Mr. Britt. ---- Grady Dewberry and family have gone to Birmingham to make their home. --- MRS. BENCE GREEN DEAD Mrs. Bence Green died Sunday at her home near Wedowee after a long illness. The interment was at Midway Monday afternoon. The deceased was a sister of Messrs. Waller and Ken Owens. They, together with Messrs. W.H. and G.P. McMurray and W.H. Pool, Mrs. G.P. McMurray, Mrs. W.K. Owens and Mrs. R.T. Sorrell, is in town but will go tomorrow to visit his old home at Milltown. --- A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. R.J. Breed yesterday. --- S.H. Striplin of Roanoke spent some days in Ashland visiting his son Wilson Striplin. The Ashland Progress. --- Mrs. D.J. Padgett underwent a serious operation last Friday. At this writing her condition is reported as favorable. --- Mr. and Mrs. W.T.A. Huey attended the funeral of the former's grandmother Mrs. Mary Jane Huey, at Liberty Grove last Wednesday. She was 87 years of age and had been a widow since the Civil War. ---- Jos. W. Carter arrived Saturday from Birmingham to get acquainted with his new son, Thomas Belcher Carter, who was born Friday evening at the home of his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Thos. L. Belcher. --- Mr. A.M. Awbrey was in Huntsville when Probate Judge W.T. Lawler was murdered last Wednesday night. He states that Judge Lawler was firmly enforcing the law against liquor venders and had just been renominated for his third term. It is charged that his brutal murder was accomplished by his political enemies, the liquor gang. ---- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, June 28, 1916 STANDING ROCK News June 26th Mr. and Mrs. Mallory of South Georgia have been visiting Mr. J.L. Mallory and family. --- Mrs. J.E. Varnedoe of Battle Creek, Mich., is spending some time with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.L. O'Neal. --- Miss Elizabeth Dewberry visited her sister Mrs. E.D. Davis last week. --- WEHADKEE News June 26th SInce our last writing, Mrs. Elizabeth Strickland crossed over the river of death to her reward. The deceased was 86 years old and had lived in this county over fifty years. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. R.H. Walls at Big Spring. ---- ROCK MILLS News June 26th John Stamper and wife went to LaGrange Sunday to visit the latter's sister Mrs. Berry Crowder. --- Sunday afternoon, Kenney Barker of LaGrange and Miss Lola Britt of this place were married in LaGrange. -- LOCAL News S.L. Peavy left last week for Dallas, Texas where he will visit his brother near that place. --- Claud Word and William Green left this morning for Montgomery to enlist for service on the border. --- Charles H. Vinson of Corinth, Miss., is spending a few days with his parents near town. --- Dr. B. Lee Whitten left yesterday for his home in Lakeland, Fla., after a visit to his sister Mrs. J.R. Tidwell. --- There is considerable sickness in the Lowell community, the most serious cases being Mrs. Jeff Hester and Patillo Cook who have typhoid fever. --- OFF TO THE WAR Saturday, two members of Company I, State Militia, located at Opelika, were in Roanoke seeking to enlist new recruits. A.H. Jordan and E.E. Riley joined and have gone with the Company to Montgomery. Of the boys who left a week ago, Cecil Weaver was turned down on physical examination. Here's wishing all our soldier boys luck! ---- MRS. J.W. HALL DEAD Mrs. J.W. Hall, formerly of this county and a sister of Mrs. C.G. Lovvorn of this city, died at her home in Talladega on Sunday, following an operation. The remains were brought to Zion near Wedowee for interment Monday. Mr. and Mrs. Lovvorn attended the funeral. Mr. Hall has six motherless children, a sad case indeed. ---- At the morning preaching service at the Methodist church last Sunday, the pastor prayed earnestly and eloquently that the Great Ruler might guide in the counsels of men, that war between this country and Mexico might be averted, but that in any event blessing might redound to all mankind. The prayer was followed by the singing, very sweetly, by Mrs. Hornsby and Mr. Edgar Glenn of the touching son, "No, Not Alone." The incident was more impressive by the fact that the eldest son of the pastor, Mr. George A. Glenn, a second Lietenant of the Gadsden Company of State Troops, is now encamped at Montgomery awaiting orders to go to the border or beyond for active service. Many in the audience were visibly moved through sympathy with Mr. Glenn and his family by reason of their keen anxiety. ---- WEDOWEE News June 26th Miss Annie Belle Parrish of Carrollton is spending a few days with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J.W.
