Gay, son of R.L. Gay, and Thomas Watson Hill, son of G.O. Hill, left Wadley June 26th for Montgomery, where they volunteered for service in the Army for the Mexican conflict. They were enlisted in Company L, First Infantry. --- Grady Wilkins was operated on for appendicitis last Monday at the home of his sister Mrs. C.A. Weldon. He is improving nicely at this writing. --- KILLED BY LIGHTNING During a storm last Friday afternoon a few miles east of Stroud, lightning struck and killed a seven year old son of Mr. Jim Nelson. The family was sitting on the front veranda and the other family members were shocked by the lightning. --- ROCK MILLS News July 3rd Courtney Bonner, son of Dr. and Mrs. W.W. Bonner of this place, left this morning for Montgomery to join a military company and for service to our country in the trouble with Mexico. --- Mrs. Phronia Smith of LaGrange is visiting her sister Mrs. Britt. --- Will Banks and wife of LaGrange spent Sunday with the former's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Brant Banks. --- LOWELL News A sad death occurred in this community at 9 o'clock when Mrs. Jeff W. Hester was called away. She leaves a husband and four children. The interment was at Forrester's Chapel Sunday afternoon. Services were conducted by Messrs. Dollar and Allen. ---- DEATH OF MRS. J.T. LOWE Many friends throughout this section regret the untimely demise of Mrs. J.T. Lowe, which occurred at her home in LaFayette one week ago. The interment was in the cemetery at Mt. Pisgah last Wednesday. Death resulted from progressive paralysis. Mrs. Lowe was a sister of Mr. G.T. Anglin and made her home here for many years. As Mrs. Callie Simmons she was known and admired by a large circle of friends and she moved to Chambers county after her marriage to Mr. Lowe several years ago. ---- LOCAL News Mrs. Mariah Moon is one of the oldest ladies in years that resides in this city, yet she is quite well preserved and does a large amount of fancy needle work in excellent style. The writer has occasion gratefully to recall this fact in that an exquisite point lace cap, done by this good lady for the editor's little baby girl, recently found its way as a gift to our home. --- WEHADKEE News July 3rd Saturday afternoon, Jesse Janney was severely shocked by lightning. His mule was killed. --- S.D. Chewning, after spending several months here, will leave today for his home in Goodlett, Texas. --- LOCAL News Mrs. Mary Jones and Mr. G.B. Avery were quietly married Tuesday night. Rev. Hodges, pastor of the First Baptist church, performed the ceremony. The West Point News ---- Berry Strozier and his wife Texas set a good example of the colored race. They have so managed that they own, in addition to a comfortable home, a little farm and a small store on the southern outskirts of town, and recently they have built a rent cottage on their place. They always conduct themselves so as to have the good opinion of both races. --- Gus McMurray left Monday for Montgomery to enlist as a volunteer in one of the Alabama companies. If he makes as good a soldier as he does a worker he will give Uncle Sam faithful service. --- On Tuesday, the annual family reunion of the Vernon family will be held with Mr. and Mrs. W.W. Jenkins at Midland, Ga. and the following from this section will attend: Judge N.D. Denson and family, Mr. and Mrs. F.H. Vernon and children of Birmingham, Mr. and Mrs. F.P. Nichols of Roanoke, Mr. and Mrs. F.A. Vernon of Cusseta. Park. --- Mrs. W.H. Blake arrived Monday from Sheffield to visit her sisters Mrs. Handley and Mrs. Driver. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, July 12, 1916 CONFEDERATE VETERAN DIES Mr. D.P. Estes died at 6 o'clock Sunday evening at his home below Welsh. The interment was at Mt. Pisgah Monday afternoon. Mr. Estes was over 70 years of age and had been in feeble health for quite a while. He was a Confederate veteran and an esteemed citizen. ---- LOCAL News Mr. George W. Truitt died Friday afternoon, June 30th, at 2:30 o'clock, succumbing to an illness of several weeks. He passed away amid the familiar scenes of his home place, six miles southeast of LaGrange. The LaGrange Reporter. ---- ADMINISTRATOR'S NOTICE State of Alabama, Randolph County Probate Court July 7, 1916 In the matter of the estate of J.W. Ray, deceased This day came Sallie F. Ray, administratrix of the estate of said deceased, and files her accounts, vouchers, written evidence, statement under oath for final settlement of said administration. Whereupon it is ordered that the 7th day of August 1916 be appointed a day on which to make such settlement, at which time all persons interested can appear and contest the said settlement if they think proper. She will then go to Baxley, Ga., to resume her work as an evangelistic singer. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, July 19, 1916 STANDING ROCK News July 17th Mrs. E.D. Davis and children and Mrs. George Willard and children are visiting their parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Dewberry. --- Mrs. G.P. Sutherlin had the misfortune to fall from a door step last night and hurt her right hip. This is the second fall she has had this year and her health was already very feeble. --- TWO DEATHS REPORTED Sunday night, the remains of Newton Stephens were brought to Roanoke from Bosburg Springs, Miss., where Mr. Stephens had gone in a vain effort to recuperate his health. The deceased was the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. W.D. Stephens, formerly of this place. The funeral was conducted at Mt. Pisgah by Revs. T.H. Landers and David Lee. Mr. C.T. Carter, who lived two miles south of town, died suddenly Monday afternoon while sitting in a chair on the front veranda of his home. He was in town in the forenoon and appeared well. Mr. Carter was 77 years of age, a Confederate veteran and a man who had the esteem of all the people. ---- NEGRO BOY DROWNED Last Thursday a couple of negro boys were bathing in a large pool near the A. B. & A. railroad east of the Cenetral. One of the boys, Cliff Price, about 16 years of age, son of Rev. L.S. Price, pastor of the colored Methodist church, got beyond his depth and was drowned. ---- WEHADKEE News July 18th A.S. Roberts is quite sick at this writing. --- C.H. Green is sick this week. --- A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Bud Middlebrooks a few days ago. --- WADLEY News W.H. Williams of near Wadley and Mrs. Annie Belle McLain of Langdale were married July 15th, Rev. E.M. Carter officiating. As this was Mrs. McLain's former home, she has many friends who extend hearty welcome to her. --- LOCAL News Mrs. J.M. Early left Saturday for her home in Berea, Ky., after a visit to her daughter Mrs. C.B. Holder. --- Mr. and Mrs. Robert Gootee and little daughter arrived this morning from Cambridge, Md., to visit Mr. and Mrs. B.D. Awbrey. Mr. Gootee is a brother of Mrs. Awbrey. --- Mr. Cecil McCrary and Miss Caudie Cummings were married Sunday afternoon, Rev. W.H. Preston officiating. The wedding is a culmination of a courtship extending over a period of more than two years and was not unexpected by the many friends of the contracting parties. The Lineville Headlight ---- W.E. Bennett, who formerly resided in Roanoke and built many of the houses erected in the first years of the towns growth, arrived Sunday from Runnels county, Texas to visit his mother, his sister Mrs. J.L. Bradshaw and other relatives in this section. He had been away 13 years and could hardly recognize the town. --- M.W. Hardy, a former popular Roanoke boy, but now a prominent and successful business man of Little Rock, Ark., was in town visiting relatives and friends Friday and Saturday. He was accompanied by his wife and baby boy and was met here by his mother. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, July 26, 1916 MRS. E.J. GARRISON DEAD News of the death of Mrs. E.J. Garrison of Ashland reached the city early Saturday morning. Mrs. Garrison had been critically ill for several days and died at the South Highland Infirmary in Birmingham at six o'clock Saturday morning. Mrs. Garrison was prominent in social, civic and church life of Ashland and the news of her death has carried sorrow throughout the county of Clay, in which she spent her whole life. She had relatives and many friends in this city who deeply mourn her death. The Talladega Home Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon in the presence of a vast congregation. Revs. T.L. McDonald, W.E. Faust, J.M. McCleskey and D.C. Hutto took part in the services. The many friends of this good woman and her husband throughout this section sympathize with Judge Garrison in his great affliction. ---- LOCAL News Mrs. John A. Hornsby and little daughter Leita of Sour Lake, Texas, arrived Friday to visit relatives in Roanoke. --- NAPOLEON News Sol Kirby and wife and Jim Bob Kirby are here from Texas on a visit to relatives and will stay over for the Kirby reunion at the old homestead on the 25th. This famiy is numerous and when they reunite there is a congregation to be sure, accompanied by good rations, good singing and pretty women galore. This reunion is only a few miles south of Roanoke. ---- LOCAL News John L. Stewart of the Lowell community is ill with typhoid fever. --- A.M. Clemmons has been in a critical condition for several days past. His son Mitchell arrived yesterday from Beaumont, Texas. --- W.E. Bennett of Texas is spending several days with his sister Mrs. M.A. Bishop a few miles east of town. --- Willis Dye is quite ill with malarial fever at the home of Mrs. J.E. McCosh. --- Mrs. Breedlove of Kerr, Ark., is visiting her parents Mr. and Mrs. J.C.
