H.H. HOWELL DEAD The Leader records with great regret the death of Mr. H.H. Howell, which occurred last Wednesday night at Hendersonville, N.C. where he had gone to recover his health. The remains, accompanied by Mrs. Howell, were brought to the old home in Heard County, Georgia. Sunday the funeral and interment occurred at Liberty Grove in the presence of a large congregation. Several friends from Roanoke attended. Mr. Howell had lived in Roanoke several years before his health failed and had many friends here who appreciate him for his real worth. ---- WEHADKEE News July 31st J.D. Burson is critically ill at his home near Omaha and is not expected to live. --- LOCAL News Rev. D.S. McGlawn passed through Roanoke last Thursday, returning to Birmingham from a visit to his daughter Mrs. W.G. Gaston in Wedowee. --- Mrs. Herbert Harlin returned last Tuesday to her home in West Alabama after spending two weeks with her sister Mrs. W.A. Arnold and other relatives in this county. --- Mr. and Mrs. G.W. Hardy moved to Roanoke last week from Alexander City. --- Mrs. L.L. Vann left Monday to spend three weeks with her mother and other kindred at Sardis, Miss. --- David Clack boarded the train here yesterday on the return trip to his home near Cordelle, Ga., after a visit to relatives near town. --- Mrs. S.W. Lane had as her guests recently her brother G.D. Farguson of Birmingham and her sister Mrs. H.D. Land and two children of Jacksonville, Fla. --- Sheriff Sam Green of Heard County, Georgia came over Monday to bring his wife who will spend some days with her sister Mrs. Frank Ruggles. --- Mr. and Mrs. Nichols were called to Midland, Georgia to attend the funeral of Mr. W.W. Jenkins who died Sunday. The wife of the deceased is a sister of Mrs. Nichols. --- Miss Minnie Belle Gilbert has returned to Abanda after spending several days here with her sister Mrs. Terrell. --- A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Rufus G. West on Saturday. --- Miss Dura Wood of Heard County is visiting the family of her uncle, W.W. Wood. --- BACON LEVEL News George Borders of Birmingham is here on a visit to his parents. --- J.T. Arnett has the fever. --- ROCK MILLS News July 31st Little Mary, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Will Boggs, has typhoid fever. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, August 9, 1916 FARM FOR SALE - - - I offer for sale my farm of 304 acres, with 100 acres in cultivation, 125 acres original timber and 72 acres good saw timber, containing four good settlements, close to school and churches, 11 miles northeast of Roanoke. Would swap for smaller place. T.Z. Head, Wehadkee, Ala. ---- A SUDDEN DEATH SATURDAY Mr. John T. Brown, an aged and well known citizen of the Double Head community, died suddenly last Saturday. The remains were interred at Lane's Chapel Sunday afternoon. The funeral services were conducted by Revs. J.T. Nolen and C.D. Hunt, in the presence of a very large company of relatives and friends. The deceased was a member of the Methodist church. He leaves a large number of descendants and many friends to mourn their sad loss. Mr. Brown had lived many years in that community and was a good citizen. ---- BACON LEVEL News Aug. 7th We are informed that J.H. Smith and son Amos of Rock Mills have purchased the 160 acre farm known as the "old McCarter" homestead and will occupy the same next fall. We will be pleased to have these good people among us. --- WEDOWEE News Aug. 7th Mrs. Tom Sykes has typhoid fever and her son Clarence has mumps. --- Fred Weathers and Miss Bettie Lou Huckeba were married Sunday in Heard County, Ga. --- LOCAL News Sol Kirby and J.R. Kirby took passage here Thursday on their return trip to their home near Canton, Texas. --- Barbour Sudduth of Dadeville and DeWitt Sudduth of Atlanta are spending a few days with home folks near Roanoke. --- Bob Barton, whose residence has been in Texas for many years, is now here visiting relatives. As his father is very feeble, Bob's stay will be indefinite. --- Cohen Higgins and family of Columbus are spending some time with the former's mother Mrs. F.L. Higgins and other relatives here. --- ROCK MILLS News Aug. 7th Mrs. Bonner and son Courtney, and Mrs. Golden and T.T. Harper attended the Adamson reunion in Atlanta on Thursday. --- CORBIN News Aug. 7th Mr. Swann Benefield and Miss Alaska Pool were married yesterday. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, August 16, 1916 WADLEY News Aug. 14th Radney Sexton and Miss Myrtle Stephens of Radney's Chapel were married at the home of his grandfather T.J. Radney last Sunday, Rev. J.H. Harris officiating. Mr. and Mrs. Sexton left this morning for their future home at Cooledge, Texas. --- WEHADKEE News Mr. J.D. Burson died last Monday night at his home near Omaha after a long illness. The deceased was about 52 years old. He leaves a wife and six children. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Jeff Beck at Liberty on Tuesday afternoon in the presence of a large congregation. The burial was conducted by the Masons of Omaha, Lamar and Walnut Hill Lodges. ---- ROCK MILLS News Aug. 15th Mrs. Martha Burson has returned from an extended visit to her sister Mrs. Fincher at Wehadkee. --- Mrs. Walter Hall is at the sanitarium in LaFayette for an operation. --- King Britt of Lineville spent Sunday night with his aunt, Mrs. Roana Britt. --- RESOLUTIONS OF RESPECT ON THE DEATH OF JAMES D. BURSON To the memory of Bro. James D. Burson, who was summoned byt he Great Arbiter of the Universe on August 7, 1916 and whose remains were laid to rest by the Masons in Liberty Cemetery. Bro. Burson was a faithful husband, kind and affectionate father, and a true and loyal Mason. Therefore, be it resolved that Omaha Lodge No. 696 A.F. & A.M., extend to the bereaved family our heartfelt sympathy and point them to implicit trust in Him who holds the nations of the world in his hand. Bro. Burson will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Burditt is recovering from an attack of LaGrippe. --- The school at Burditt's schoolhouse closed yesterday with a picnic. --- LOCAL News Mitchell Clemmons left Monday on his return to Beaumont, Texas, his father being somewhat better. --- G.W. Meacham went to LaGrange last week to visit his fahter who is very feeble. --- Lon Baker died Monday in Chambers County. --- Mrs. J.B. Howard and two children of Beach Island, S.C. are visiting Mrs. Kyle, the former's sister. --- Miss Annie Mae Henry of Route 3 and Mr. H.M. Talley of Glenn, Ga., went over to the latter place Sunday and were united in marriage by Rev. J.D. O'Keefe. --- Mrs. Annie Ray Andrews, while on a visit to Mrs. Ora Trent, received news last Friday that her husband C.H. Andrews had shot himself in Roanoke, Va. Mrs. Andrews left for her brother's home in Franklin, Ga., and no further word has been received here of her husband's condition. ---- Robert Graves Birdsong and Miss Melie Brown came to Roanoke on Tueday and were married by Justice Cofield. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, August 23, 1916 MRS. F.M. ADAMS DIED LAST WEDNESDAY At Home After a Long Illness at Seventy Years of Age Mrs. F.M. Adams died at her home in West Roanoke at six o'clock last Wednesday evening. She had been a sufferer for many months and her death, while nevertheless a shock to her people, came as a release to her from all earthly pain and care. Mrs. Adams was seventy years of age and was married to her husband fifty years ago last February. She had lived near the line of Georgia before coming to Roanoke some 10 years ago. She was devoted to her home and her friends and was cheerful even amid her sufferings. Those who lived nearest to her and who had been blessed by her kind ministrations speak in highest terms of her good life. Funeral services were conducted at 4 o'clock Thursday afternoon by the pastor, at the Methodist church of which she was a member. An array of floral emblems were presented by sympathetic friends. The interment was in Cedarwood cemetery, this city. Besides many relatives there are left to mourn their great loss, a husband and several children. Among the number is Miss Jewell Adams, a most faithful and esteemed employee of the Roanoke Leader. ---- CARD OF THANKS We want all our good friends to know that we feel very grateful for their many kind words and deeds spoken and done for our dear wife and mother during her long illness and after she had passed away. F.M. Adams and family. --- MOVED HERE FROM TEXAS J. Thos. Nelson with his wife, son and daughter, arrived last Friday from Dallas, Texas to again make Roanoke their home. They have all the while owned three residences in Roanoke and will occupy one of them after September first, the Brannan boarding house. ---- HOTEL CHANGES HANDS Mr. and Mrs. H.L. Busbee, who came here from Lineville, have taken charge of the Weaver Hotel and changed its name to the Roanoke Hotel. Mr. Busbee will also operate the jewelry store which he proposes to open September first by the hotel building. Miss Cludie Treadwell, Mrs. Busbee's sister, is helping in the office. ---- LOCAL News B.A. Taylor, wife and children arrived Friday from a visit of several weeks in Oklahoma, being called there by the illness of Mrs. Taylor's mother who is now improving. --- Rev. J.W. Rucker showed us the other day an interesting old document. It was a proclamation of pardon issued by President Johnson to Mrs. Rucker's grandmother for some part she took in the interest of the Confederacy during the War Between the States. ---- J.N. (Bud) Floyd and MIss Izora Stephens drove down to Guntersville by automobile last Sunday morning where they were united in marriage by probate clerk W.C. Simpson. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. W.W. Floyd of this place and is a hustling young business man, engaged in the mercantile business here at Lathamville. His bride is the daughter of city marshall and Mrs. Joe N. Stephens and is a charming young woman who has gained many friends since moving here with her parents. The Albertville Banner ---- Mr. and Mrs. B.G. Sanders are on a visit to Ritters, S.C. --- C.O. Webb and family of Atlanta were among those called here last Thursday by the death of Mrs. Adams, Mrs. Webb's mother. --- Mr. and Mrs. Guy Heflin arrived last week from Lardsburg, New Mexico to spend a month with relatives in Roanoke and Randolph county. --- Mr. and Mrs. Ben Walker have moved from LaGrange to the J.W. Grady place near Stroud. Mrs. Walker is a daughter of Mr. Grady. --- Mrs. Leila Holmes, who has been visiting relatives near Dickert, arrives tomorrow to spend a few days with her cousin Mrs. Brit Belcher, before returning to her home in Carrollton. --- F.P. Pounds arrived yesterday from a stay at Hot Springs, to visit his sisters Mrs. John A. Carlisle and Mrs. James A. Wilson. --- Mrs. Dan Holt returned to Montgomery on Monday, accompanied by her mother Mrs. Burpee. --- Eugene Fuller and sister Mrs. Cumi Baker were here last week from Beaumont, Texas. --- Mrs. W.F. Dorman and children of Carrollton returned home yesterday after a visit to relatives in and near Roanoke. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, August 30, 1916 LOCAL News John W. Bowman had the misfortune Friday night to lose his wife and babe. The interment was at Big Spring Sunday afternoon, after services conducted by Rev. J.D. O'Keefe. --- A RARE RELIC Mr. Thos. P. Horton brought to the Leader office Saturday a hand made book, written by hand in legible, old style chirography, by Mr. Horton's grandfather Mr. Sherod Horton who came over from Ireland. The book treats of astronomy, mathematics, geography, etc. It is 116 years old. ---- Mrs. G.W. Jackson, who was called here by the fatal illness of her mother Mrs. F.M. Adams, returned Saturday to her home in Sardis, Miss. --- J.T. Kelley and J.W. Bowling of Talladega were in Roanoke this week. Mr. Bowling was accompanied by his wife and they will remain some days with their daughter Mrs. J.W. Cash. They will probably move here this fall. --- Will Forbes, who has been visiting his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. E.R.
