Teal Gravelle tealtree@comcast.net January 10, 2006, 6:39 pm The Roanoke Leader December 1916 NEWSPAPER ABSTRACTS FROM "THE ROANOKE LEADER", Roanoke, Randolph County, Alabama for DECEMBER 1916 NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, December 6, 1916 POISONED BY MISTAKE One of the saddest deaths that has occurred in our city in a long while was that of Mrs. W.F. Burns, which occurred at the home on Greenville street Monday night about 12 o'clock. It seems that Mrs. Burns was suffering with a headache and got up about 11 o'clock to take a tablet to relieve the pain, and through a mistake got a tablet of cyanide of potasium, which they had procured for some other purpose. After swallowing it, she began to complain of pains and nausea and it was soon discovered that she had made a fatal mistake. A physician was summoned but the poison had taken such deep effect that nothing could be done to relieve her sufferings, and death came in a short while. It was only a few months past that Mrs. Burns had a narrow escape from tomaine poisoning. This is indeed a sad blow to the young husband who has the sympathy of the entire community in this sad hour of bereavement. Mrs. Burns also leaves a child nine months old. The body was carried to Rock Mills Wednesday morning where the funeral services were held, after which the body was interred in the Rock Mills cemetery. The LaGrange Graphic The deceased was reared at Rock Mills, joined the Methodist church at the age of 11 years, and was greatly loved by friends in her old home and by those in LaGrange as well. The family has the sincere sympathy of all. ---- WADLEY News Thomas J. Stewart of Almond community died Saturday morning and was buried at Almond cemetery on Sunday. In this death we lose another excellent citizen. --- NEGROES KILLED BY W.J. BALLARD An unfortunate affair occurred Friday night at a tenant house on the farm of Mr. J.T. Talley one miles east of section "Number Two", Roanoke's negro section, in which two negroes, Henry McGehee and Lloyd Adams, were killed and the latter's wife wounded in the leg. It seems that Adams and his wife were innocent by-standers and were hit by stray shots. Deputy Sheriff Wm. J. Ballard is alleged to have done the shooting. He had gone to the house to arrest McGehee and Buck Smedley and was accompanied by Bailiff Bob Owens and a Mr. Banks of Rock Mills and R.T. Yarbrough and A.M. Taylor of this place. When the posse entered it is claimed that McGehee grabbed a shot gun, afterwards found to contain a cut shell. It was then that the firing occurred. As the story is related to The Leader, Buck Smedley had some trouble Friday morning with Mr. J.A. Bartlett on whose place the former lived near Rock Mills. The disagreement was over some cotton and it is claimed that Smedley fired on Mr. Bartlett at his home and that he was soon afterward joined by McGehee and that they defied an armed posse who tried to apprehend them. The sheriff was then phoned for, with the result as above stated. ---- CARD OF THANKS Being unable to see all personally, we take this method of expressing our appreciation to each and every one who showed us so much sympathy and so many kindnesses in every way in our sorrow caused by the loss of our dear daughter and sister.
