Teal Gravelle tealtree@comcast.net January 23, 2006, 12:19 am The Roanoke Leader December 1917 NEWSPAPER ABSTRACTS FROM "THE ROANOKE LEADER", Roanoke, Randolph County, Alabama for DECEMBER 1917 NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, December 5, 1917 JOHN SEYMOUR REPORTED DEAD IN ERROR Last week the Leader published a notice of the death of John Seymour, this county, reported from Camp Wheeler. We are pleased to learn later, however, that the young man, while ill in the hospital at the time, is still living and is now convalescing. --- MORE BOYS TO TRAINING CAMP Tuesday marked the leaving of the last recruits of the first draft for Army men made upon Randolph county, the total being 221. In the number going yesterday, were 41 white men and 8 negroes. The men mobilized in Wood's Hall Monday afternoon except those who reported at Wedowee. In the hall Monday with the drafted men were quite a number of citizens of the town and county, including a few ladies, relatives of some of the young fellows. These were visibly moved by the formal proceedings which placed their loved ones finally at the disposal of the government for the duration of the war. Circuit Clerk Pearson delived a sensible, kindly talk to the ones who are to go forth in the defense of the flag, telling them of the pride Randolph county feels in them, urging every man to do his duty. Mr. Pearson designated Emmet Muldrew to be in charge of the white men till they arrive at camp and Sam Birdsong to be in charge of the negroes. Simms was called here a few days ago by the illness of his wife and child at the home of Mrs. Simms' father, Mr. Charles Brown. --- Howard Sands was here Saturday and Sunday to visit his father who is quite ill. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, December 12, 1917 DEATH OF RANDOLPH COUNTY BOY AT CAMP WHEELER Last Friday occurred the death by pneumonia of Walter Thompson at Camp Wheeler, Ga., where an epidemic of that disease has been prevailing. The remains were shipped to Roanoke Saturday and carried to the deceased's former home at Potash, where they were interred Sunday. Thus this noble young fellow gave his life for his country no less than if he had died on the battle field. ---- NOTICE Notice is hereby given that an application for the pardon or parole of Martin Morris, convicted and sentenced by the Circuit Court of Randolph County, Ala., the spring term of 1912 for murder in the second degree and sentenced to the Alabama penitentiary for a period of sixteen years, will be made to the Governor of Alabama at the next sitting of the board. Jane Morris ----- LOCAL News News reached Wedowee today of the death of Mr. Robert Willoughby at his home near Newell. He had been in failing health for several months. --- Mr. Robert P. Phelps has sold his home place on Roanoke Heights to Mr. W. Henry Scott, a good citizen of the Rock Fence community, Chambers County, who will move here with his family before the end of the year. Mr. Phelps will leave tomorrow for Sayre, Oklahoma where he will make his home, having two daughters out there. His many Roanoke friends regret his leaving but trust he will be pleased with his new location. ---- Saturday, V.F. Cooper left for New Orleans to volunteer for service in some branch of Army work. --- The following young men left this morning for Birmingham to appear for the final examination for entrance into the Army Aviation Corps: Euclid B. Sharman Belmont Pearson Howard Taylor James Edward Tomlin Will R. Holliday Charles L. Key William J. Arnett If they pass the exams, they will take training at San Antonio, Texas. ---- John C. Riley goes today to enter the Army in the Quartermaster's service at Chattanooga. ----- A. J. Pittman Jr. is leaving for Atlanta on Saturday where he goes to enlist in the United States Navy. --- Mrs. Polk Smith, an aged resident of Stroud community, died at her home on Monday. --- Lieutenant H.M. Brittain left today to resume his Army duties at Chickamauga, near Chattanooga, while Lieutenant W.K. Hooper went to Camp Pike, near Little Rock, Ark. --- The three year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Byrd Blake was seriously burned this morning at their home three miles northwest of town. --- J.E. Almon returned to his home in Cullman County after a visit to relatives and friends in Randolph. --- C.C. Mosteller is moving to Ethridge, Tenn., where he will operate a shoe shop. --- Luther and Sam Gauntt arrived Saturday from Omaha, Texas to spend a week visiting. --- The police arrested Sing Whitlock on Monday night, a negro charged with violating the prohibition laws. He was fined $100. by Mayor Liles. --- Tip Mitchell, an old colored citizen of Roanoke, died last week. Many of us will miss old Tip. ---- Mr. Otis Fincher and family arrived from Texas on Tuesday to again make their home in this county. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, December 19, 1917 LOCAL News H.L. Zobel is the Voter's Registrar for Randolph County. All those desiring to register to vote can meet him on Dec. 26th & 27th, 1917 at White & Awbrey's store. --- The news is reported to the Leader of the deaths yesterday of Mrs. Grover Dennis and of the three year old son of Smith Jackson, who lived over the Georgia line. --- A decision from the Supreme Court of Georgia handed down Saturday, returns to the custody of Mr. and Mrs. A.C. McCarley of this city, their little grandchild, whose mother Mrs. Brown died some time ago. ---- Mr. W.F. Ussery received a telegram Friday announcing the death of his sister, Mrs. J.W. Sparks, which occurred in Temple, Texas on Thursday. The interment was in that city on Friday. Mrs. Sparks was 64 years of age and had been living in the Temple section of Texas since 1872. She visited Roanoke eight years ago. Of a large family of thirteen children, only six now survive. They are: Thos. S. Ussery, Mrs. S.S. Waller, Wm. F. Ussery, Millard F. Ussery, John R. Ussery and Mrs. J.B. Weathers. ---- Miss Ada Harper announces the engagement of her niece, Miss Willie Harper, to Mr. Thos. J. Still, the ceremony to take place on Christmas morning. --- Gus Moorman is at home on furlough from the Army for a few days. --- On Sunday afternoon, J.L. Burgess and Miss Minnie Young were joined in matrimony by Justice of the Peace W.W. Cofield. --- W.H. Stevens and W.N. Henry left Tuesday morning for Winston county to reside. --- J.E. Nelson of Stroud community, was in town a few days ago to meet his daughter Miss Lizzie who was returning from Delta, where she went to accompany her grandmother Mrs. S.E. Brand, who had gone to spend several weeks with her sister Mrs. Nolan and other relatives. ---- Mrs. T.J. Embrey was in town Saturday to meet his daughter Mrs. Hef Treadwell and child, who came from Detroit, Texas to spend the holidays. --- R.J. Seymour is preparing to move to LaGrange. --- Mrs. W.C. Walker has gone to spend the Christmas season with her mother Mrs. C.W. Hill in Shawmut. --- Mrs. S.F. Abernathy and son Franklin spent last week in LaGrange, the guest of the former's brother, E.R. Taylor and family. --- Arthur Brannan has been excused from military duty and is at home. --- Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Arnett left yesterday on a return to their home near Tifton, Ga., after a visit of two weeks to relatives in this section. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, December 26, 1917 AMOS NEWTON LOVVORN MARRIED IN CALIFORNIA The Leader is in receipt of a handsomely engraved announcement of the marriage of Mr. Amos Newton Lovvorn to Miss Goldier Horr. The ceremony occurred the ninth of December at Bakersfield, California and the annoucement is issued by the parents of the bride, Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Warren Horr. The groom is a son of Mr. and Mrs. C.G. Lovvorn of this city and his many friends wish him every joy in his newly found fortune. ----- NEWS OF STANDING ROCK Dec. 24th Twin boys arrived at the home of Mr. and Mrs. T.W. Gheesling on the 14th. --- Three of Uncle Sam's boys, Lubie McClain, Leonard Young and Payne Strickland are at home from Camp Wheeler for a few days visit. --- LOCAL News Many of our readers will learn with regret of the death of Hon. James D. Norman, which occurred at his home in LaFayette Dec. 13th. He was a prominent member of the Baptist church and a temperance worker of long experience. Mr. Norman twice represented his county in the lower house of the legislature and twice served Chambers and Randolph counties in the state senate. He had many friends wherever known. ---- J.W. Molton of Oklahoma is visiting his sister Mrs. Henry Smallwood, after an absence of 33 years. --- Mrs. J.C. Rowe of Talladega is visiting her daughter Mrs. C.R. Pittman. --- Mitchell Clemmons of Beaumont, Texas is among Roanoke relatives and friends during the holidays. --- A.E. Barnes, who is now a deputy sheriff in Cullman county, came last week to spend the holidays here with kindred and friends. He was accompanied by his brother's wife, Mrs. Albert Barnes and child. --- Miss Savannah Cullins died Sunday night at the home of her sister, Mrs. J.C. Hearn near Rock Mills. The interment was at Wehadkee cemetery at 11 o'clock Monday. --- WEHADKEE News Dec. 24th Mrs. A.W. Whatley has been very sick for several days past. --- L.T. Whatley and family arrived a few days ago from Homer, La., to make their home in this community. --- Mr. Gid Green of Farmersville, Texas is visiting his parents and other relatives in this section. --- Mr. Jim Bridges and family arrived last Friday from Morgan county to make their home in our community. --- BACON LEVEL News Dec. 24th Nimrod D. Ussery and Vernon Allen went to Norfolk last week to join the Reserve Corps of Uncle Sam. --- A family reunion will be held at the residence of N.C.
