Teal Gravelle tealtree@comcast.net January 29, 2006, 11:01 pm The Roanoke Leader June 1918 NEWSPAPER ABSTRACTS FROM "THE ROANOKE LEADER", Roanoke, Randolph County, Alabama for JUNE 1918 NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, June 5, 1918 LOCAL News Jep Wilson, who has been spending several weeks with his mother Mrs. Octavia Wilson several miles from town, left yesterday for Colorado where he goes to recuperate his health which is very unsatisfactory, we regret to note. The former's little son will remain here with his grandmother. ---- FUNERAL OF M.H. RADNEY WAS LARGELY ATTENDED The writer was one of the large party of Roanoke people that went to Wadley last Wednesday afternoon to attend the funeral of Mr. Minus H. Radney, whose sad demise occurred the day before in Birmingham. Mr. Radney was a prominent citizen of the town and an active member in the Methodist church. The Baptist church, the largest building in town, was overflowing with people of the community and those from various surrounding points. Rarely is so much grief manifested upon such an occasion as was in evidence at this time. Many were heard to remark that no man could be more sadly missed than he whose memory was thus honored. Even the negroes in large numbers filed by the casket. The funeral services were very touching and were participated in by Revs. O.R. Burns of Wadley, W.E. Faust of Birmingham, B.T. Waites of Roanoke and W.F. Price of Sylacauga. ----- LOWELL News Last Saturday evening, Joe Ogletree took his family down to the Chattahoochee River on a camp fish. While there, his wife was stricken with paralysis. An effort was made to bring her home but her condition was such that it was advisable to stop at Standing Rock. She is now being cared for in the home of the Methodist pastor. ---- LOCAL News Lon Shanks visited his parents and sisters here Saturday night and Sunday, leaving for Pennsylvania where he goes to enter the Tank Corps of the United States Army. This fine man is over the draft age but felt it his duty to join the service in the defense of the country. ---- Mr. Tom Dunn died in Anniston last Wednesday. His remains were brought to Daviston, his old home, for interment on Thursday. --- Mrs. E.C. Rork returned Saturday from Camp Gordon where she went to visit her husband, who expects to leave in a few days for Army service overseas. --- Truett Weaver, J.F. Wilkinson and Belmont Pearson volunteered yesterday for service in a branch of the U.S. Army. --- Rev. B.T. Waites was called to Wadley last Friday to attend the funeral of Mrs. Walter Fletcher, who died at Cusseta. Rev. W.T. Daniels, pastor of the deceased passed through Roanoke with the remains, accompanying the sorrowing parents, Mr. and Mrs. R.W. Thompson. Mrs. Fletcher was a fine christian lady and her death is lamented by all who knew her. She leaves a husband and a son. --- Wm. Cardwell, a well known citizen of Wadley community, died on Monday. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, June 12, 1918 WEDOWEE News Dr. Byrd Ford is the guest of his sister Mrs. F.R. Mashburn. --- Mr. Reed Traylor is spending some time with his mother Mrs. Hattie Traylor. --- Mr. Willie Melton was the guest of his aunt, Mrs. E.J. Saxon last Thursday. --- TWO DEATHS IN LOWELL Last Thursday morning, Mrs. Susie Posey died at her home in Lowell, after a lingering illness, leaving four children. The interment was at Forrester's Chapel on Friday. Yesterday morning, occurred the death of Miss Lena Hester, the 14 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W.D. Hester, following a belated operation for appendicitis. The remains will be carried today to Forrester's Chapel for interment. ----- WEHADKEE News June 10th Mr. Joshua Green died last Tuesday at his home in South Georgia and was brought back to this county and buried at Providence church near Lamar. The deceased was a half-brother to Uncle Jack Green and formerly lived in this community. ---- LOCAL News The preliminary trial of Sam Gregg for killing Newman Ingram was held in Wedowee Monday. The former was released under a bond of $5000. ---- C.A. Holliday returned yesterday from Atlanta, where he went to visit his little daughter Thelma, who is there under medical treatment. --- Shelley J. Pool was reported last week among the American soldiers dead in France. His death resulted from sickness. He formerly lived near Wedowee. This is probably the first Randolph county man to die in France during this war. --- The following young men from Randolph county took the train in Roanoke Friday for Camp Sevier, Greenville, S.C. to enter Army service: John W. Brown Will Waldrep Barton F. Bailey Rufe Hale Charles N. Norred George B. Watson Thomas N. Kitchens S.A. Holloway Chas. S. Prescott Awbrey Evans, the latter being transferred from Jackson county. ----- Mr. Marion Smith arrived last week to spend three months with his daughter, Mrs. J.T. Clark and other relatives in this vicinity. He was a former citizen of this county but went to make his home in Waco, Texas over twenty years ago. ---- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, June 19, 1918 CORBIN News June 17th C.E. Huey boasts of a new boy at his house. --- Marvin Kirby of Camp Wheeler was in this community on Sunday. --- W.A. Almon has been sick for some weeks but is improving at this writing. --- LOCAL News J.L. Hodges who has been at home for some time on a farm furlough, returned to Camp Gordon last Thursday. --- John E. Faust who is now in the Army, spent the latter part of last week in Roanoke on furlough. She will go to New York soon. --- George H. Wilson passed through Roanoke yesterday enroute to Montgomery where his son Taylor Wilson at Camp Sheridan, has just undergone a serious operation. --- Charlie Vinson left yesterday to accept a position at Lano in western Texas. --- Deputy Sheriff Arthur Robertson raided a still in Beat 3 last Friday and destroyed the outfit. A large boiler was brought to town. Jap Norred and Jim Reaves were said to be at the still and both were arrested and placed under bond. --- George Cox, a justice of the peace in Beat 5, had a difficult on Sunday with two negroes, Hugh Emory and his brother, in which Cox was severely handled. He shot and seriously wounded one negro. The other escaped. --- As The Leader goes to press, the death of Mrs. E.E. Haines is expected at any hour. The husband, the parents, Dr. and Mrs. J.P. Liles, and other members of the family have the tender sympathy of all of their friends. --- Capt. J.H. Oldham is ill and now confined to his bed. --- Mr. Emil Zobel returned home Friday, after an absence of three months helping Uncle Sam to construct government buildings. He leaves again this week and expects to go to Pensacola. --- Mrs. E.W. Ross is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Geo. W. Stevens. --- Mrs. Stell Blake was called to Heflin on Wednesday by the illness of her aged father, Mr. S.A. Strickland, whose condition is such that she has not yet returned home. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, June 26, 1918 SURPRISE WEDDING IN ROANOKE LAST SUNDAY Many friends of both young people were very much surprised last Sunday afternoon to learn of the marriage at the home of the bride, of Mr. Claud M. Glenn and Miss Catherine Kyle, this happy event bringing to a satisfactory culmination of a delightful love affair of several years growth. Mr. Glenn, who is a son of Rev. E.M. Glenn, former pastor of the Methodist church here, is an excellent young gentleman of sterling worth, while is bride is the charming daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Kyle, of this place. After the ceremony, which was performed by Dr. Rucker, this happy pair left for the groom's home in Birmingham. The Leader extends hearty congratulations and best wishes for Mr. and Mrs. Glenn. --- LOCAL News Mrs. James Cobb of Tifton, Ga., is at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.H.
