Teal Gravelle tealtree@comcast.net February 28, 2006, 10:53 pm The Roanoke Leader August 1920 NEWSPAPER ABSTRACTS FROM "THE ROANOKE LEADER", Roanoke, Randolph County, Alabama for AUGUST 1920 NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, August 4, 1920 RANDOLPH COUNTY MAN KILLED IN STATE PRISON Montgomery, July 26th Clarence Bailey of Escambia county, a white convict, was held in the Elmore County jail on a charge of murder as a result of the death of Francis Suddeth of Randolph county, at the state prison at Speigner on Sunday. It is alleged that Bailey stabbed Suddeth to death with a pocket knife while Suddeth slept in his bunk in the prison barracks. No reason has been given for the crime. Bailey has declined to discuss the killing. Bailey is serving a ten year sentence for forgery, while Suddeth had only three more months of an eight year sentence for larceny. Hamp Draper, warden of the prison said that Suddeth died within twenty minutes after he was stabbed. The Birmingham Age Herald ----- MISS BRANNAN MARRIED TO MR. CAFFEY ON SUNDAY Mrs. A.S. Brannan received the news Sunday that her daughter Miss Fannie was married in Birmingham to Mr. Caffey, who was formerly in the employ of the Alabama Power Company of this place. This culmination of a romance of some months will be of interest to all the friends of the young people. ---- WADLEY News Aug. 3rd William R. Stone, 84 years of age, died near Malone on Sunday and was buried at Almond with Masonic honors yesterday. One by one, the Rebel soldiers are being gathered to their rewards. --- LOCAL News Mrs. D.K. Turbeville is at the bedside of her father Mr. Robert Brown, who is quite ill at his home in Heard County. --- Bob Crawford, the negro who broke out of the callaboose in Roanoke ten days ago, came back yesterday to complete his engagement, having been picked up in Chambers county by Deputy Sheriff Gay. --- Mrs. T.E. Calhoun continues quite ill with typhoid fever at her home in this place. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, August 11, 1920 WEHADKEE News Aug. 9th Mr. J.A. Picksley of Homer, Louisiana, is visiting his sister Mrs. L.T. Whatley near this place. --- Mr. and Mrs. George Benefield and the former's mother from Marion county are visiting relatives in this section. --- Mr. E.L. Gilliland. --- CORINTH News Aug. 9th Mr. and Mrs. Garlin Knight are visiting their parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.T. Yates of Ofelia. --- Mrs. Susan Forrester and daughter Annie of Texas are spending several weeks with C.F. Adkins and family. --- Mr. and Mrs. Alma Grey and family of LaGrange who were visiting E.O. Gray and family were called home on account of the death of their grandmother. --- CARD OF THANKS We are very grateful to all who ministered to our mother during her long illness. We feel that special mention should be made of the Odd Fellows, the physician and neighbors who did all in their power to minister to her and to us. BEALL Jr., the Spark Plug Inventor Dr. Fletcher W. Beall Jr. and Miss Helen Barbry Jones were united in marriage on Sunday at Woodlawn, in the presence of a large number of friends and relatives. The ceremony was pronounced by Rev. Dr. Carlisle, pastor of the Woodlawn Baptist church and occurred at the residence of W.L. Corley. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A.B. Jones of Roanoke, while the groom is a well known specialist of this city. Both are widely known throughout the state and their marriage has attracted much attention. The Bessemer Advertiser. Dr. Beall, the famous spark plug inventor, is visiting Mobile, accompanied by his pretty bride of only a week. He is the chap who perfected the world's greatest electrical invention. He is visiting Mobile in the interest of his patent and may establish a factory here. He has appointed Mr. F.A. Robertson here to represent his interest for the sale of his invention which will appear on the market soon. The Mobile Register, Aug. 20th. Dr. Beall is an eye specialist, and is located at Bessemer with a large practice. ------ LOCAL News "Grandma" White, who had been ill since early spring, died lat night at the home of her daughter Mrs. G.H. Edwards, just north of town. She had reached the age of 97 years. The funeral will take place tomorrow and interment will be in Ava cemetery. Dr. Hood, a friend of the deceased of long standing, will have charge of the service. ---- C.V. Walker, while out driving near Rock Mills on Sunday had his car turned over by a blow out of his front tire. His sister Miss Myrtle had a collar bone broken. His wife and mother were also slightly injured. It was a close call for them. ---- LEVEL ROAD News Aug. 23rd Mrs. Bill Camp and Mr. and Mrs. Tobe Gibson who have been ill are thought to be improving some. --- Mrs. H.P. Burkhalter and two children will leave tomorrow for their home at Post, Texas after a visit to the former's parents, Mr. and Mrs. T.L. Weaver. --- Mrs. Carrie Rotton of Milltown is spending some time with her mother Mrs. M. Moon who is in feeble health at the home of the latter's daughter Mrs. Chewning. --- Mrs. Caleb Benefield, a prominent and beloved lady who lived north of town, died Saturday. The interment was at Friendship on Sunday with services by Elder W.R. Holder.
