He had been aware for some time that his disease was incurable, so made all necessary arrangements for the end, even indicating the favorite hymns he wished to be sung at his funeral, and then patiently awaited the final summons. The remains were carried at one o'clock Sunday afternoon to the Bethel Baptist church, of which he had been a member for thirty some years. Here a large congregation assembled to witness their appreciation of the good man who had come, in peace, to the end of his journey. His pastor, Rev. Martin, paid a tribute to the noble faith and sterling worth of the one who had fallen to sleep, and testified to the faith of the departed, and pointed the bereft family to the promise of reunion when this life is over. Mr. Dunkin had spent his life and years in the community where he died. He had labored long, holding the esteem of those who knew him and doubtless his reward will be sweet. ---- FAMILY REUNION HELD AT LEVEL ROAD Mr. Walker Dunson reports that the reunion held on Saturday at the former old homestead of the late Mr. H.R.D. Treadwell near Level Road was a most pleasant occasion. About thirty people were present, most of whom had not been there in thirty years. A bountiful dinner was served at the fine spring. Delightful memories were thus brought to mind as the family feasted and talked together. Another year from this date the reunion will be held again. The kindness of Mr. Swann in giving the company the privileges of the premises was appreciated. ---- MRS. ABERNATHY DIED SUDDENLY Last Thursday Afternoon at Her Home The sudden death of Mrs. Sam F. Abernathy last Thursday afternoon at her home in this place was not only a shock to the immediate family but to her many kindred and friends. Mrs. Abernathy was under treatment for heart trouble that had developed recently and when the final attack came, her demise was so sudden that physicians found her in a dying condition when they hurriedly reached her bedside. The circumstances made the untimely going away of this beloved young woman peculiarly sad. She was taken from the sacred shrine of motherhood, leaving an infant daughter only three weeks old, besides her husband and a son ten years of age. The family were making their home with the aged parents of the deceased, Mr. and Mrs. M.R. Taylor and the blow falls heavily upon them also. Mrs. Abernathy was a member from childhood of the Christian church and had been teaching in the Sunday school for years. Rev. S.P. Spiegel came from West Point to conduct the funeral services Friday afternoon, which were held at the home. A very large concourse of friends was present and the display of floral offerings was most impressive. HORNSBY DIED ON TUESDAY At the Home of his Daughter Near Friendship at the age of Eighty-Eight Years; Was A Confederate Veteran The funeral services will be conducted this afternoon at 3 o'clock over the remains of one of the oldest and best known citizens of Randolph county, Mrs. Noah M. He was very much interested in this place, as it was at this place in 1844 that his mother was born. Mrs. Engesser's father was Mr. M.E. Edwards who was commonly inown as Mick Edwards. At that time he owned most all the land on which our city now stands. In 1856, William Engesser, a German who was born on the Rhine, came to this country and in 1859 was married to Miss Sallie Edwards. In '61 he volunteered for the Confederate service and operated a tannery for the Confederacy at West Point, Ga., for some time. Later on he was in active service and was wounded in the Battle of Atlanta. He died about 20 years ago. Mrs. Engesser is living in Atlanta and is enjoying good health. Wouldn't it be a nice treat for this lady to see our little city now and contrast it with the cross roads place that she left in the 'fifties'. Said Mr. Engesser, "I feel kindly at home here where my mother was born. The people have treated me so nice." ----- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, May 25, 1921 LOCAL News Mrs. Percy Moore and Mr. Mack Manley of Newnan, and Mrs. C.M. MANLEY PASSED MONDAY FROM THIS LIFE TO THE REWARDS ON THE OTHER SIDE When the fingers of death reached out and clutched in their relentless grasp the failing physical frame of Mr. Cass D. Manley, late Monday afternoon, they ruthlessly touched a tender spot in many a heart that long had loved this courtly, genial gentleman. Not only was Mr. Manley dearly loved by those of his own home circle, for he possessed those characteristics of gentleness and human sympathy that made him a favorite with all who knew him. By nature and by experience he was a fine nurse and throughout his life he gave much time to caring the the sick and ministering to the suffering. And having spent his entire life of 64 years in this community, it is no wonder there are so many to mourn his passing and to bless his memory. The loss of another one of the oldest residents, one of the original citizens of this town, is felt in peculiar way by those who have resided here all these years. The deceased belonged to a prominent family of five sons and two daughters, all of whom are dead except one, Mrs. Atchison of Texarkana. For several years, Mr. Manley's health has been feeble but he was able to be up till the day or so before the final illness. He expressed his willingness to go when it was evident the end was near. He had been a member of the Baptist church forty years. Few were more faithful in attendance or more interested in the work of the church than he. A large congregation assembled at the Baptist church at three on Tuesday afternoon, where the last rites were held, amidst an abundance of pretty flowers. Dr. Hines delivered a beautiful and comforting funeral oration. Mr. O'Keefe and Mr. Martin had part in the service. Interment was at the local cemetery. The widow and six children survive. The occasion was in honor of the natal day of "Uncle" Ranse, who celebrated his eighty-fifth birthday on that date. A large number of the friends of the family were present and showed that they enjoyed the day no little. Conversing, singing, and the like were the features of the forenoon. At the noon hour a table was spread under the trees that would have done honor to a first rate barbecue. Such a display of the culinary art is seldom seen elswhere. The cuisine was unmatched. After a large number present had thoroughly convinced themselves that their hunger had been satiated, they repaired to the house where they engaged in a service that was deeply touching. Fine talks were delivered by Revs. C.M. Dollar, J.D. Dollar and J.M. Hughes, followed by talks by "Uncle" Jim Weathers, "Uncle" Bob Kirby and Mr. W.A. Brumbeloe. This is a custom the family observes annually but this, perhaps, eclipsed them all. ----- File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/al/randolph/newspapers/newspape887gnw.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/alfiles/ File size: 20.9 Kb
