SAM G. MULDREW AND MISS RUTH SUDDUTH WED At one o'clock last Thursday afternoon, Mr. Sam G. Muldrew of this city and Miss Ruth Sudduth were married at the lovely country home of Mr. and Mrs. M.R. Sudduth, parents of the bride. Rev. Claude Orear was the minister who officiated at the happy culmination of this affair involving the lives and the happiness of two of our most esteemed young people. They are now at home for the present at the residence of the groom's mother, Mrs. Susan Muldrew. Mr. Muldrew is connected with the police force while Mrs. Muldrew is a member of the faculty of the Knight-Enloe school. ---- WEDOWEE News There was a birthday dinner given at "Uncle" Nat Shelnutt's in his honor last Saturday. About 70 in all attended. --- Mrs. K.D. Owens who has been sick for some time, doesn't seem to be getting any better. Many prayers are being offered for her recovery. --- LOCAL News Rev. Osie Moore of Bell County, Texas is helping Rev. O.W. Barber in a revival at Ava church. About 7 years ago he went to Texas and later entered in the ministerial work. Bro. Moore was reared in the Ava community. This is his first visit back since then. He was accompanied by his wife whom he married in Texas, and his little son Randolph, whom he named in honor of his native county. He preaches the Gospel in its purity and large congregations attend. ---- His many friends here regret the physical and mental breakdown of Jim Cobb, who was carried last Thursday night to his home in Tifton, Ga. His case is most heartbreaking. --- RESOLUTIONS ON THE DEATH OF JOSEPH SHERARD HORTON Bro. Joseph Sherard Horton, born September 3, 1859, married to Nancy Elizabeth Adamson on December 28, 1886, joined the M.E. Church at Forester's Chapel on June 11, 1881 and died August 18, 1921. Whereas God in His infinite wisdom saw fit to take from our Sunday school the efficient president of the Bible class and faithful member of the school, and, Whereas, we feel so great the loss to our Sunday school and community; Therefore, be it resolved by Macedonia Sunday school; 1st; that we bow in humble submission to the Will of Him that doeth all things well. 2nd; that we sympathize with the bereaved family in the loss of husband and father. 3rd; that our Sunday school has lost one of its faithful members, especially the Bible class has sustained a great loss, for Bro. Horton was our beloved president. 4th; that the family has lost a sympathizing father, a devoted husband, the community a good citizen, the church a faithful member and the Sunday school a great helper. 5th; that a copy of these resolutions be furnished The Roanoke Leader for publication, a copy be furnished the bereaved family, and a copy be put in our Sunday school minutes. 6th; that we commend his family to Him who is able to take care of them. There is a vacant chair in the home, a vacant seat in our Sunday school and many sad hearts in our community. We can only ask God to fill the vacancy with His Holy Spirit. T.J. Embrey, Supt. H.J. Wright and children spent one day last week with her daughter Mrs. Bessie Taylor. --- LOCAL News Fuller D. Estes and J.B. McClure came up from Columbus on Saturday to visit home folks here. --- C.B. Smith of Hattiesburg, Miss., is here, being called by the critical illness of his father Mr. John A. Smith. --- Three well known colored preachers of this vicinity, Revs. A.J. Green, C.C. Terry and S.A. Adamson, left Tuesday morning for Chicago to attend the National Baptist Convention of their race. --- W.C. Coleman was painfully injured Monday morning at the planing mill operated by him and Hamp Adamson in this city, when a scantling was caught in the belt and hurled on him with great force. Two ribs were broken. He is resting as comfortably as possible at the Sanitorium. --- SWAGG News Sept. 5th Mr. Velford Kitchens who has been relatives at this place, has returned to his home in Florida and was accompanied by his uncle, Mr. Ayres Kitchens who will make it his home. --- Mr. Myral Caldwell who has been spending some days past with his parents, has returned to his home in Oklahoma. --- Mrs. Bean and daughter Miss Minnie visited the former's daughter Mrs. Yarbrough at this place this week. --- Mrs. E.L. Holmes visited her mother Mrs. Kitchens near Milner last Sunday. --- WEHADKEE News Sept. 5th Blake Benefield, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dock Benefield, who has been very sick with typhoid fever, is improving. --- Mr. Jim Moses and little son of Lawrenceburg, Tenn., have been visiting the former's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Moses and other relatives in this section. --- Mr. Clay Mayfield and Miss Nettie Belle Kent, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W.T. Kent went over into Georgia last Sunday and were married. --- Mr. Liles Gay and Miss Ilver Green, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T.J. Green, went over to Georgia last Sunday and were married. --- WOODLAND News Sept. 5th Mrs. L.H. Harris was buried at Providence last week. She was eighty-one years old. Her home was at Tyus, Georgia. The funeral service was conducted by Revs. S.M. Daniel and Cumbee. --- LOCAL News Amos N. Heflin, Judge of Probate ----- SENTENCE OF 30 YEARS GIVEN LAURINE SLEDGE The case of the state against Laurine Sledge for the killing of George J. Tatum was tried in LaFayette last Tuesday and Wednesday. The jury returned a verdict of guilty with a sentence of 30 years in the penitentiary. His attorneys gave notice of appeal. In the meantime, Mr. Sledge left Monday to begin his sentence. ----- LOCAL News Mrs. S.L. Cavender has returned from Lanett where she had been visiting her daughter, Mrs. Luther Robertson who had the misfortune to lose recently twin babies, that died one day after birth. --- John A. Hornsby, wife and daughter Leita arrived Saturday from Sour Lake, Texas to visit relatives. --- William McDaniel who has been making his home with his aunt, Mrs. A.J. Langley, left Monday morning for Lineville to make his home hereafter with his father W.H. McDaniel, who was recently married to Miss Irene Upshaw in Atlanta. ---- Tom Brown, formerly of Lowell community, died in Fairfax and was buried at Rock Mills on Saturday. --- Mrs. S.O. McKinney came in last week from Ripley, Miss., to spend some months with her daughter Mrs. R.L. Dowdle. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, September 21, 1921 DEATH OF TWO AGED CITIZENS Last Saturday occurred the death of Mrs. Jack Swann at the home of her daughter Mrs. Owens near Rock Stand, where Mr. and Mrs. Swann were making their home. The interment was made at Mt. Zion at three o'clock Sunday afternoon. A large congregation of relatives and friends of this good lady were present. Revs. C.M. and J.D. Dollar, C.F. Weaver and W.R. Knight had a part in the services. Besides the husband, seven children survive, among the number being Mr. T.J. Swann of Roanoke. Three children of the deceased preceded her into the beyond. She was 71 years of age. Last Saturday, another citizen of Roanoke, Mr. J.M. Sims, received news of the death of a parent. His father Mr. Joseph Sims, died suddenly at his home in Marcoot, in Chambers county, at the age of 71 years. He was apparently in good health until stricken dead at sunset on Saturday. The interment was at Ebenezer on Sunday afternoon. --- LOCAL News Twins, a boy and a girl, were born to Mr. and Mrs. W.D. Mitchell last Friday night. --- Mr. John A. Smith continues very low at the home of his son Albert Smith. His brother from Pell City is with him. --- SWAGG News Sept. 17th "Aunt" Nancy Fowler had the misfortune of falling and hurting herself Monday afternoon. --- ROCK MILLS News Sept. 19th On the 11th inst., two couple were married; Mr. Cicero Harry to Miss Cumi Fowler, and Mr. Howard Harry to Miss Rebecca Yates. One week later, Mr. Cecil Bonner and Miss Odessa Owen were united in marriage. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, September 28, 1921 WEDOWEE News Sept. 26th Yesterday, Mr. Ernest Elder of Cedartown, Ga., was married to Miss Ada Cline at three o'clock Sunday afternoon at the home of Mr. and Mrs. A.R. Cline, parents of the bride. Rev. Mr. Hammonds spoke the words which made them man and wife. Mr. Elder was born and reared in Randolph county, near Ofelia, but for some time he has been engaged as engineer on the road from Cedartown to Chattanooga. They will leave for their future home at Cedartown this afternoon. --- Mr. Hammonds had the pleasure Sunday morning of marrying another couple. Mr. Leon Yates, the youngest son of Mr. R.M. Yates of the Peace community, was married to Miss Yarbrough, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Will Yarbrough of Woodlawn, where the marriage was celebrated. --- LOCAL News Messrs. Hugh and Bowdon Smith are in town, called here by the critical illness of their father Mr. J. A. Smith. --- Mr. and Mrs. W.P. Martin left Sunday evening for LaFayette where they are spending the week with the latter's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Stanley. --- A.A. Mooty had as his guests on Sunday his father and mother Mr. and Mrs. R.B. Mooty of Franklin, Georgia. --- NEW HOPE News Sept. 26th Two weddings in this community of recent date, were Mr. Clay Sears of the Woodland community to Miss Ora McManus of this community, and Mr. Edwin Moore to Miss Ina Henderson, both of this community. --- NOTICE OF SALE On the premises of the Perry Waldrep old homestead, on Monday, Oct. 24, 1921, within the legal hours of sale, I will sell to the highest bidder, two mules, the property of Mrs. Ann Waldrep, deceased. Hammonds performed the ceremony. --- Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Benefield attended the Moore family reunion which was held at the old home place on Saturday.
