Jeff Hester and family, after a years stay at Deport, Texas, returned last Friday to Roanoke to make this place again their home. --- Thomas Madden arrived Saturday from Dulin county, Ga., to spend a week or so with relatives in this county. --- D.E. Bailey arrived here Friday from Deport, Texas to again make this place his home. He spent one year out there and is glad to be back in Randolph county. --- Mrs. Della Brazeal and child arrived last Thursday from Carrollton to make this place their home. --- CORINTH News Oct. 3rd Mrs. M.L. Grey of LaGrange is visiting her daughter Mrs. J.C. Stephens. The infant son of Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Stephens was buried at Forester's Chapel on Sunday, Sept. 25th. --- WOODLAND News Oct. 3rd Mr. Thos. Cline had the misfortune last week to get his leg badly hurt in a hay press. --- Mr. and Mrs. Pate Landers visited the latter's mother Mrs. Vida Hinton last week. --- Mrs. Edna Noles is still feeble although she is perhaps some better than she was during the summer. --- WEHADKEE News Oct. 3rd Mr. Brewer Walker of this place and Miss Cassie Ware of Wedowee went over to Evansville last Sunday and were united in marriage. --- FORESTER'S CHAPEL News Oct. 3rd Former Sgt. Crawford B. Grey left this morning for Camp Benning where he will re-enlist in the U.S. Army. He is the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. E.O. Grey and has only been home about six weeks from the Army, having served the last five years in America and overseas. --- SPRINGFIELD News Oct. 4th News has been received here that Mrs. Orrie Stitt Weathers of Oklahoma is quite sick. --- Miss Mae Hearn of Grady, Arkansas is visiting her sister Mrs. Noon Neese. --- Mrs. Barbara White is very sick at her sister's, Mrs. Morgan. --- ROCK MILLS News Oct. 4th We regret to note the death of Mr. Geo. Manley. He was a young man and had many friends. --- Miss Hassie Pike left Friday for Jacksonville, Florida where she is to be married to Mr. Milt Lee. --- LOCAL News Mr. Ab Tatum was stricken this morning at his home in LaFayette and his life is despaired of. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, October 12, 1921 BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION OF MR. F. BOWDON BROWN Sunday, Oct. 9th was a great occasion in the home of Mr. F. Bowdon Brown near Johnson's Cross Roads. On that date Mr. Brown was 75 years of age. It was arranged that the family and friends of this good man should gather on that occasion and honor him with befitting celebration of the event. His six children were all present, in addition to grandchildren, other relatives and a host of friends. All brought dinner and spread it together. Rev. G.D. Hunt was present and delivered an appropriate discourse. It was a good day for all. ---- WEDOWEE News Oct. 10th Mrs. Jeff Benefield and family visited his brother and mother near High Pine on Sunday. His brother Lem's folks are all very sick with the fever, having had it all summer. --- Mrs. Emma Saxon left today for Atlanta where she will live with her daughter Miss Eva Saxon who is working at a bank there. --- The writer had the pleasure last week of visiting in Cleburne county where his father and mother Mr. and Mrs. H.C. Walker had just arrived from Hico, Texas. They have been away from this country nearly four years. --- Mrs. Rhudy Wilson has been very sick the past few days. Her father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Downs of Bowdon, Ga., are with her. --- CARD OF THANKS We wish to express our gratitude to our good neighbors and friends in Roanoke and in the Double Head community for the many kind tokens of love and service extended us in the death and burial of our husband and father. We feel sure Heaven will smile upon everyone who showed us kindness in this trying hour. Mrs. H.B. Kitchens and children ---- SUDDEN DEATH OF H.B. KITCHENS OCCURRED IN ROANOKE SATURDAY About ten o'clock last Saturday morning, while sitting at Belcher's barn talking to Dr. Horton, Mr. H.B. Kitchens was stricken with apoplexy and fell to the floor. Every aid was rendered the unfortunate man on the spot and he was shortly afterward removed to his home in this place, where he expired an hour after being stricken. He had been in poor health for a year or so. Mr. Kitchens was about 60 years of age and leaves a widow and several grown children. He was born in Georgia but came to this vicinity when a boy and resided several miles south of town the greater part of his life. He had many friends and was a member of the Christian church at Antioch, where the funeral services were held at 2:30 Sunday afternoon, in the presence of a large congregation. Rev. G.D. Hunt was in charge. ---- NOTICE Owing to the death of Mr. Wiley A. White which occurred April the 11th last, the firm of White & Awbrey will have to dissolve January first next. A.M. Awbrey, surviving partner --- SOUTHERN COLORED MAN WANTS THE LEADER SENT TO HIM IN THE NORTH Berry Strozier, with his wife Texas Strozier, well known and esteemed colored people of Roanoke, are now residing in the North and are among the most interested readers of their old home town paper, as is evidenced by the following note which the Leader has just received from Berry, who is located at Woodlawn, Pennsylvania. "It affords me great pleasure to enclose a money order for $1.50 because I am sure that I get value received for it. When I look at The Leader I am looking at the biggest paper there is in my estimation. It really should be named "Home Sweet Home" for that is what it looks like to me. So keep her coming." ----- LOCAL News Mrs. M.H. Hancock left Monday for her home in Birmingham after spending some months with her sister Mrs. Boulware. --- Arnold Estes has been quite ill but is improving some. His brother Frank was here from Columbus last week to attend him. --- Mrs. J.P. Liles and son Shaffer returned Sunday to their home at Tifton, Ga., carrying with them the former's father Mr. Woodall who goes to spend the winter in that city. --- Olin Ozley, Herebert and Eric Pitts left last Thursday in a Ford car for central Florida looking for employment. Meantime Mrs. Ozley is with the family of her father-in-law, J.D. Ozley. --- Miss Essie Mae Fuller, former Roanoke lady, now missionary located at Pernambuco, Brazil, wrote to renew her subscription to The Leader and expressed her good wishes. --- News is received that Mrs. H.G. Bradshaw underwent a serious operation in a Birmingham infirmary a few days ago. Her condition is considered favorable at this writing. --- Mr. and Mrs. Ritchie of Lenoir City, Tenn., came down to Roanoke the latter part of last week to visit Mr. and Mrs. T.C. Ussery, the latter and Mrs. Ritchie being sisters. --- ROCK SPRINGS News Oct. 10th The little child of Alford Bonner died of diptheria and was buried here last Thursday. --- Mrs. Joe Manley and children visited the former's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Rance Kirby of Rock Stand last week. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, October 19, 1921 MR. HIGGINS ATTAINS AGE OF 92 YEARS On Saturday, October 8th, Mr. R.J. Higgins attained the age of 92 years. His daughter in this city, Mrs. M.W. Carlisle and Mrs. J.R. Hollinger, accompanied by Mr. Hollinger, drove down in a car to be present on this rare occasion and to show honor to their father, who is one of the most lovable of men. The celebration was at the latter's home at Blountstown, Florida and was a most happy occasion. Taylor who continues very ill. --- Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Belcher will leave tomorrow to make their home in Orlando, Florida where the latter's parents now reside. --- Paschal Felder arrived Sunday from Charleston, S.C. to spend a week with his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Harley. --- An adopted child of Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Richards was operated on yesterday for appendicitis at the local hospital. --- Moultrie and Ross Pruett are expected home this week from Cedartown, Ga., where they were called by the seriouss illness of their grandmother Mrs. W.T. Hunt, who died on Friday. --- H.H. Smith, after a visit to his brother O.W. Smith, left Monday on his return to his home at Clovis, New Mexico. --- Mr. Abner Tatum died Sunday at his home in LaFayette at the age of 65 years. Mr. and Mrs. S.H. Tatum and daughter, also Mr. Sherard, and Mrs. and Mrs. J.E. Barker of this city attended the funeral, which was held in the Baptist church in LaFayette at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon. --- FORESTER'S CHAPEL News Oct. 17th Misses Linnie and Arlila Britt of Lanett, spent the weekend with their sister Mrs. J.W. Carson of this place. --- Mrs. Fannie Wilder is spending several weeks with her children, Mrs. Leonard Williams, Mr. J.E. WIlder and Mrs. J.G. Harris in Roanoke. --- WEHADKEE News Oct. 17th Mr. Albert Hester arrived from south Georgia on Friday to visit relatives in this section. --- SWAGG News Oct. 15th Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Bailey of Rock Springs visited their brother and sister Mr. and Mrs. J.W. White last week. --- CORINTH News Oct. 17th Tilton Windsor will leave tomorrow for Florida to stay awhile, providing he is able to get a job picking oranges. --- LEVEL ROAD News Oct. 17th We are sorry to note that Mr. Bill Camp is in feeble health. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, October 26, 1921 WILL SMALLWOOD KILLED IN CUTTING AFFRAY ON SATURDAY Will Smallwood, about twenty-one years of age, we are informed, a son of Mr. and Mrs. T.N. Smallwood, was cut in two places on the left arm on Saturday night by Joe Shellnut on Peachtree street. The young man was rushed to the hospital and given immediate attention but it was found necessary to amputate the arm this morning. Mr. Shellnut was carried to jail in Wedowee. The affair is a very unfortunate one and arose over a trivial matter. Later, Will Smallwood died about 3:00 p.m. ---- LOWELL News It has just come to light that Hoyt Robertson and Miss Velma Nolan were married at Evansville, Georgia last July. -- Yesterday at Evansville, Ga., Mr. Emory Cavender and Miss Macie Dunson were married. --- Johnnie Shaw was taken into custody today on a charge of having two living wives. Bond has been set but has not been made yet. ---- LOCAL News Mrs. J.H. Leftwich, after spending several months past with her daughter Mrs. Jack Padgett, left Sunday for her home at Mellow Valley. --- Mrs. W.H. Uhlman, after a short visit to Roanoke, left Mnday to visit her parents at Pascagoula, Miss., and will proceed thence to her home at Cordelle, Ga. --- George Starnes of Hulbert, Texas was in Roanoke yesterday, going to visit his sister and old friends in this vicinity. He has been away for 25 years. He is a son of the late Mr. A.D. Starnes who conducted a newspaper in Wedowee many years ago, being well remembered by many of the older citizens of the county. ---- J.T. Owens received the news the first of the week that his brother W.K. Owens died in a hospital in Little Rock, Arkanss on Oct. 9th. He was the youngest of the brothers and was known here by old friends as Bill Owens. Many friends in the county regret to hear of his death. --- The many friends of Mr. A.C. Park regret that he was stricken with paralysis last Thursday on the left side and his condition is quite serious. Mr. and Mrs. J.A.
