N. Smallwood, was held at Mt. Zion lat Thursday afternoon. Many friends of the family deeply sympathize with them in the shocking calamity that has befallen them. The deceased leaves a wife and baby. His death resulted from knife wounds said to have been inflicted by Mr. Joe Shelnutt. The latter is in jail. He will have a preliminary hearing before Judge Heflin in county court next Monday. ---- LOCAL News Mr. and Mrs. Fox Stephens returned yesterday to their home in Macon, Ga., after a visit to their brother and sister, Mr. and Mrs. H.L. Busbee. --- J.M. Johnson and family took a train from Roanoke today, enroute to Fort Pierce, Florida where they will make their home. Mr. Johnson has rented out his farm several miles north of town. --- Clarence Green arrived Saturday from Birmingham and will spend a few days with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.S. Green. He will then go to Miami, Florida where he has a job. --- Mr. John A. Sherard of Graham community, a Confederate veteran and former citizen of this community, was a visitor last week to his brother Mr. Dave Sherard. --- Trot Moore of Alexander City was the guest of his brother Gus Moore last week. --- Mrs. J.A. Brown died last night at her home in the Springfield community. She was 87 years of age. --- BACON LEVEL News Oct. 31st Mr. Mack Talley was thrown from an automobile last Wednesday afternoon and was so badly hurt that he has been confined to his bed for several days, but is convalescing at this writing. --- Mr. Jackson Ussery continues quite ill. --- SWAGG News Oct. 29th Mr. Dempsey Nelson and Miss Parilee Woodward went over the line last Thursday and were married. --- LOCAL News Mr. and Mrs. J.T. Baird returned Sunday from a visit to their daughter Mrs. Mark Jordan in Alexander City. --- C.E. Warlick and family returned Monday from Columbus where they spent several days very pleasantly. They met there the former's sister Mrs. M.J. Nicholson who arrived from Bradentown, Florida. She accompanied the Warlicks to Roanoke and will make her future home with them. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, November 9, 1921 TWO AGED VETERANS CELEBRATE BIRTHDAY ON THE 8th Yesterday was the birthday anniversary of General B.F. Weathers of this city, also of his brother Mr. J.A. Weathers. They are brothers and Confederate veterans. The former is 82 years of age and the latter is 76 years of age. A celebration of the double birthday was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Weathers at White's Chapel, attended by many relatives and friends. The Leader wishes these two beloved citizens who are still hale and active, many returns of their natal day. --- PRELIMINARY TRIAL OF JOE SHELNUTT HELD ON MONDAY A large crowd was in Wedowee on Monday, attending county court. The case was the preliminary hearing of Mr. Joe Shelnutt charged with the slaying of Will Smallwood, which occurred in Roanoke more than two weeks ago. Only a few witnesses were examined. The court allowed Mr. Shelnutt bond in the amount of $5,000. ---- MRS. KING D. OWEN PASSES AFTER LONG ILLNESS Mrs. King D. Owen died at her home in Wedowee Nov. 4th from the result of influenza which attacked her three years ago. Every effort possible was made to restore her health, but all in vain. Almost a score of physicians, some of whom were specialists, were unable to do more than give temporary relief. Her death had been expected for more than two years, but apparently she was not suffering more than usual when the end came. Before her marriage Dec. 26, 1905 to Mr. King D. Owen, she was Miss Annie Belle McEachern. She was born in Tallapoosa county, Alabama on August 13, 1884. In early life she became a member of the Baptist church and lived a consistent christian life in every respect. She leaves a husband and three sons, Hobson, Woodrow and W.D., a father, stepmother and several brothers and sisters, together with many friends in different parts of the country. Mrs. Owen took a progressive attitude toward life. She was especially interested in her husband's and children's education. She appreciated an opportunity to make new friends. All who knew her loved her and recognized her as a woman of the very highest type and of unusual ability in many ways. The funeral was from the First Baptist church of Roanoke and interment was made in the city cemetery. ---- FUNERAL OF MRS. KING D. OWEN HELD IN ROANOKE At 2:30 Saturday afternoon the funeral of Mrs. King D. Owen, who died at her home in Wedowee, was held at the First Baptist church in Roanoke with interment following in the city cemetery. The services at the church were very impressive and were conducted by Rev. J.M. Cook, principal of the county high school, in which the husband of the deceased is a teacher. A large company of sympathetic friends from Wedowee and Rock Stand accompanied the members of the bereaved family on their sad mission. ---- DEATH OF MRS. DENNEY IN MILLTOWN OCCURRED LAST NIGHT Mrs. James L. Denney died unexpectedly at her home at Milltown last night. She leaves a husband and quite a number of children, besides hosts of friends and relatives who mourn the loss of this good woman. Interment will be at Milltown at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon. ---- LOCAL News Mr. and Mrs. J.E. McClain left Thursday to make their home in Orlando, Florida. --- Mr. W.C. Whitlock and Mrs. Emma Atchison were married at 2 o'clock today at the home of Mr. E.T. Pike several miles from town. --- Mr. and Mrs. J.T. Sands received news last week of the marriage of their son Howard Sands to Miss Margaret Thompson which occurred in Lumpkin, Ga. the 29th of October. --- Mr. G.W. Bugg, a Confederate veteran, 88 years of age, died Nov. 1st and was buried at Concord on Wednesday. --- Mrs. F.A. Vann arrived today from Talladega to spend a few days with her son, C.H. Vann and family. --- Mrs. Leslie McBeth and two children of El Paso, Texas are visiting the families of Amos and Edgar Holliday, returning from a trip to Chattanooga. Mrs. McBeth is the second daughter of Rev. Jesse Holiday. --- BACON LEVEL News Nov. 7th Mr. Milton Jackson Ussery died last Thursday afternoon. The funeral service was conducted by Bro. Shadix. THe deceased leaves a father and three sisters to mourn his death. The family has the sympathy of the entire community in their bereavement. --- WOODLAND News Nov. 7th Mr. Lilton Jackson and wife visited their daughter Mrs. Hoyt McCarley on Sunday. --- NEWELL News Nov. 7th We regret to chronicle the death of one of the oldest citizens in the county, Mr. Cicero Crews, out on route one. --- We learn that "Father" Shaddix, one of our old pioneer preachers who lives at Pine Hill, is lying at the point of death. --- MALONE News Nov. 7th "Uncle" Johnny Traylor fell from his bed on Friday and is now in a helpless condition. --- CARD OF THANKS We wish to use this method to express as best we can our appreciation to everyone for the many deeds of kindness to us during the illness and death of our companion and mother. May every one of you feel that anything you did from giving a glass of water to bringing flowers and material things of many kinds, was a source of comfort and happiness, so that even in the midst of our great suffering there was a spring of joy. Owen and children ----- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, November 16, 1921 WEDOWEE News Nov. 14th Sheriff Cofield, Deputy Sheriff Ballard and Bob Clifton made a trip to beat one last Friday and captured a still. Also arrested 4 men, three of the Wiggins boys an one named Watts. I understand that the Wiggins boys made bond and Watts was carried to jail. The still was near the Cleburne county line and known as the traveling still, as it was thought to have been moving up and down the river for some time. It was a thirty gallon copper still. --- Mr. and Mrs. H.C. Walker will move to Cleburne County to make their future home. --- SUDDEN DEMISE OF W.G. GREENE WAS A SHOCK TO ENTIRE COMMUNITY The news that Mr. W.S. Greene was dead at his home in east Roanoke at the hour of nine o'clock Friday morning came as a surprise to his many friends throughout the city and surrounding country. Mr. Greene had not been seriously ill very long. His system had become poisoned from infected tonsils resulting in speedy death. Mr Greene was a fine specimen of physical manhood and in the prime of life. As the head of a devoted family his untimely taking away is especially sad. He leaves of his immediate family a wife and two boys. He was true and affectionate in his home and was a genial, quiet gentleman well liked by everyone. He was for a number of years city electrician of Roanoke. The Methodist church was filled at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon to witness the funeral rites conducted by the pastor of the deceased, Rev. Claude Orear, assisted by Dr. Hines. A wealth of flowers were displayed around the alter place. The services were exceedingly impressive. The remains were then borne by neighbors to their last resting place in the city cemetery, accompanied by a large concourse of friends, who deeply sympathize with the stricken family in their great loss. ----- MISS JEWELL ADAMS HAS MARRIED MISSOURI MAN The many friends in this section who formerly knew Miss Jewell Adams during her residence in Roanoke, will be interested in reading the following account of her marriage, taken from a recent issue of the Okemah, Oklahoma Ledger: Miss Jewell Adams and Mr. Robert Bennefield were united in marriage last Saturday night at the home of the bride's sister in Ft. Worth, Texas. Mrs. Bennefield is a sister of Mrs. Della Reynolds and Miss Nora Adams of Okemah, and has many friends here, having lived in Okemah prior to going to Ft. Worth. Mr. Bennefield's home is at Marysville, Missouri where the young people will make their future home. ---- REV. J.J. SHADIX DIED ON FRIDAY AT PINE HILL The Leader is informed by its correspondent at Pine Hill that Rev. J.J. Shadix died at his home in that vicinity last Friday night after several days illness and was buried at Pine Hill with Masonic honors on Sunday, and other services being conducted by Rev. H. Willoughby. The deceased was an honored minister of the Baptist church and was 81 years of age. He was the father of Rev. G.H. Shadix of Bacon Level community. ---- CORINTH News Nov. 15th Mr. W.O. Kent and family who came here some time ago, have left to go back to Roby, Texas. His brother Roy Kent went with them. --- ROCK MILLS News Nov. 15th Rev. W.J. Layton and Miss Ruby Yates were married last Sunday. He was the pastor of the Baptist church here several years ago and has many friends here. The bride is one of our loveliest girls, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W.Z. Yates. They left immediately for their home in Lanett. --- Mr. F.W. Hill entertained a few of his friends at a birthday supper last Wednesday evening. It was his seventieth birthday but he is still young at heart and all of his friends wish for him many more. --- CARD OF THANKS We take this medium through which to thank our neighbors and friends for their aid and assistance during the fatal illness of our husband, father and brother. Anglin has returned from Fort Pierce, Fla., where he accompanied his daughter and son-in-law Mr. and Mrs. Gay Pittman who have moved to that place. --- Clarence Greene who was called here from Miami, Florida by the death of his father Mr. W.S. Greene, will remain here and carry on his father's work as an electrician. --- WEHADKEE News Nov. 14th Mr. and Mrs. T.J. Green went to south Georgia last week prospecting. We understand they will move there in a short time. --- Mrs. J.S. Bridges of LaGrange is visiting her son Will near this place. --- Mr. Odell Norred and Miss Lillie Mae Carr went over to Evansville a few days ago and were happily married. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, November 23, 1921 NOTICE OF ADMINISTRATOR'S FINAL SETTLEMENT State of Alabama, Randolph County Probate Court In the matter of the estate of Pyrene C. His daughter Mrs. Velma Scott of Denver, Colorado is visiting home folks. --- Mr. Elbert Chafin left last week for his home in Texas after spending some time with relatives in Randolph county. --- Mr. Sol Fincher sold out last week and is moving to north Alabama. --- LEGAL NOTICE By virtue of an order of sale made and entered in the probate court of Randolph county, Ala., by Judge John T. Gordon is enjoying a visit from her mother Mrs. Graves Embrey of Talladega. --- Rev. T.B. Jordan and family were in Roanoke last Saturday afternoon, enroute to their new home, Reform, in Pickens county. --- Mr. and Mrs. F.M. Wever arrived Monday from Anderson, S.C. to spend a few days and are being cordially greeted by the many friends of these clever people. --- "Brother" Breed died last Thursday at New Hope in Chambers county an was buried Friday at Concord. --- Jim Tom Liles of Tifton, Ga., will spend the holiday season with his sister Mrs. Carl Weaver. --- SWAGG News Nov. 19th Mr. Golden Yarbrough, who has been in the West for a few months, returned to his home here Thursday night. Mr. Yarbrough had the misfortune of getting his collar bone broken in an automobile accident a few days before he returned to his home. --- "Grandma" Fowler who has been ill the past few weeks is reported as worse at this writing. --- CORINTH News Guy Price left last Wednesday for Birmingham for treatment in a government service hospital. He will undergo an operation while there. His many friends hope that he will soon be able to return. --- LOCAL News J.F. Brown returned Monday from Manchester, Ga. where he was called to attend the funeral of his brother-in-law Joe Hollis. Mr. Hollis was reared in the northern part of Chambers county and will doubtless be remembered by many of the older settlers here. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, November 30, 1921 LOCAL News Mr. and Mrs. F.P. Mullendore of Anniston are visiting the family of their son, O.L. Mullendore. --- Mr. and Mrs. Sam Dunkin arrived last wek from California where they have been spending a year and will spend some days with home folks. --- Mr. William R. Garrett, who lived many years ago in the northern part of Chambers county, died Tuesday morning at his home four miles south of LaFayette. He was an honest citizen and well liked. --- WEHADKEE news Nov. 28th T.J. Green, R.H. Walls, A.G. Heard and B.J.
